Episode 104 - A Glimmer of Hope...
Location: Starbase 400 / Various Ships
Timeline: MD1 - 1040hrs
ON:
USS Yorktown
"Admiral on the..." Harper started as K'Temoc walked through to door and toward the Captain's chair.
"Belay that." K'Temoc said with a smirk.
Danielle laughed at her fiance, "You could have let the Ensign finish."
Harper smirked, "No, no, it's fine."
"Status report." K'Temoc said as Rann handed him a PADD.
"All intel has been uploaded to all vessels. There was also something odd, a report I didn't upload. I asked Cross, he didn't either." Rann replied.
K'Temoc looked over at the Bolian Intel officer, then a little smirk crossed his face before Rann walked back to his position.
"Impulse manifold purged and clear." The Lieutenant at the conn reported. "Initiating impulse pre-start sequence."
"Micro-fusion generators online." The Lieutenant at the Engineering station stated."
"Collimating nadion emitters." Harper added.
USS Vanguard
"Dilithium matrix aligned and calibrated." Heron reported. "Opening antimatter ejector ports."
"Emergency life support and damage control systems on standby." Tenu added.
"And he didn't know where the information came from?" MacLeod asked Cross.
"No sir, neither do I. We ran a full diagnostic, it's a legit intel report. RDB8's weapons array is in the process of being upgraded, a handful of their disruptor emitters are offline." Cross replied.
"Autonomous guidance systems online and active." Murphy reported.
"Phaser safeties engaged." Ballard reported from Tactical Two.
"Field stabilizers online, synchronizing warp plasma flow." Heron added.
"Weapons systems online, phasers are fully charged, torpedo launchers loaded and standing by." Metsker reported from Tactical One.
MacLeod nodded. "Alright. standby to move out with the Essex and Yorktown."
USS Kearsarge
Lennox and Taz were finalizing checks on the ship's defensive systems.
"Major McDaniel's fighters are coming aboard now," Taz reported.
Lennox nodded, "Good. The General should be here soon too."
Olivia boarded the Kearsarge for her first outing with the marine contingent as the new marine medic. She had to admit she hated leaving the twins behind, last time she'd done so was at Heyerdahl Station and that had lead to being pulled into a mirror universe and months spent away from her babies. She was nervous but she had a job to do and she had to do it. Her thoughts would also be with TJ aboard the Luna.
Hurd stepped onto the bridge and took a seat in the Command Chair. "Let's go."
Lennox gave a respectful nod, "Conn, break orbit of the station and form up with the others."
USS Lexington
"So they never fixed the damn thing?" Stark asked.
"No sir, the auxiliary generators for the aft shields are still offline. We do have a spare generator on board so I have engineering working on it now, but they're saying it won't be ready before we get to the target area." Wayne reported.
"Get down there and help them out, whatever it takes to get it online," Stark replied.
"Will do." Wayne replied as he left the Bridge.
"Commander, all preflight checks completed, we're ready to depart." The Lieutenant at Science One reported.
"All right. Helm, take us out of orbit of Starbase 400 and move us into formation with the others.
USS Mercy
Ariana arrived at the Mercy feeling a mix of nervousness and excitement, she'd never been in the role of XO before and she knew Hades would be a tough taskmaster. She aimed to do him proud especially after everything he'd done for her.
She was purposely wearing a neural inhibitor hidden under her hair on the side of her neck, she needed it to tone down the input from her newly ramped up senses. Since the merging of the two personalities in her body her abilities had become stronger than ever, and she was struggling with control. She couldn't afford any mistakes or distractions so the inhibitor was a must.
Stepping out of the turbolift, immediately noticing Ariana standing on the Bridge, Carolyn offered her friend a reassuring smile. Given the situation, it seemed like Ariana was being thrown into the deep end, even if the Mercy was normally protected to an extent by the rest of the ships. She held up a PADD, "update on our systems and supplies. We are all set in Sickbay. Well, as ready as we can be."
Ariana smiled as she took the PADD. “Thank you, Carolyn. I’ll do my best to make sure we get there and back in one piece! This is my first time out as an XO so it’ll be a learning curve! Do we know how many wounded to expect?”
"No, unless we've had an update since I left Sickbay. We have additional triage areas set up so we have plenty of room," Carolyn told her. Lowering her voice she added, "please don't worry, you will be great. If T'Lar, or Hades, didn't have confidence you could do this, you wouldn't be here."
Ariana nodded. “I made sure I wouldn’t get distracted.” She moved her hair to reveal the neural Inhibitor she was wearing. “We can’t afford any mistakes so I thought it best to be safe rather than sorry,”
"Any issues, you know where to find me," Carolyn told Ariana as she headed for the turbolift. Technically she could have found a reason to stay on the Bridge, at least for their departure but she wanted to triple check everything before doing it all over again. It was an easy way to keep herself busy. And she didn't want to be a distraction, especially to Hades. "Stay safe."
Hades entered the bridge of the ship. This was it. This would prove to be perhaps one of the biggest battles yet. He'd ensured he had the best team and now came the pre flight checks. Sitting down in his spinning chair he hit the ship wide coms. "Hades to all personnel. Synchronize countdown. We leave in ten minutes. All department heads to the observation room." He took one more semi spin and then headed off to the meeting room.
In the turbolift, Carolyn rolled her eyes. Talk about timing... Redirecting the lift she was soon entering the observation lounge, sinking into the nearest chair as she waited for the rest of the senior staff to arrive. At least she had confidence Sickbay was ready, and with Reid backing her up she had a very capable physician to assist with whatever came their way.
Ariana made her way straight to the observation lounge, as she entered she took a seat at the top of the table to the side of Hades. She took a deep breath hoping her nerves didn't show too much.
The rest of the crew piled in and the last to arrive was Michael Nivar. Hades turned to the group and began with no formality. "Michael will be joining us as Security Chief. As a member of Section he had a rank and I've reactivated it. We're going to be back of the line but if our ships are in trouble we'll need to zip there and back quickly." He looked at Ariana. "Ariana I want you reading all the department head reports on readiness. I will need a summary."
"Yes Sir" Ariana nodded. "Doctor Corrigan already provided me with a report. I'll have other reports ready for you shortly."
"Good." He turned to Carolyn. "Sickbay report."
"We have secondary triage centres in place, all the EMH programmes have been checked out by engineering and standing by and we are as ready at this point as we can be. I'll be handling any major surgeries, with Doctor Reid overseeing triage," she told him.
"Excellent. Try to take things easy when you can. Make sure you eat...." He had been about to say if something happened to her Harris would have his hide but...He shook it away. "Ensign Hopkins?"
Hopkins jumped in. "I've got system for monitoring all ship to ship on our side. I can filter the opposition. At the slightest hint of medical distress we're ready."
He gave a nod. "Michael?"
"I've beefed up security and have added a few of my own implementations. We can minimize shield dropping for emergency transport I've also asked Engineering to boost power to transporters."
He gave a nod. "Engineering...I need to be agile and quick. We're a big ship what have you got for me."
At the end of the table, Lieutenant Elauri spoke up. "You don't have to worry, Sir," the Trill woman assured him, "with the recent upgrades to our propulsion systems, we have significantly increased our manoeuvrability. Even with the planned power diversion to the transporters, the Mercy will keep up with whatever you need her to do. Your helmsman, Ensign Manz, completed trials just last week and said the controls were, and I quote, 'sweet'."
Hades sighed, "Good. Alright. This is not going to be pretty but I need you all. Our main goal is to help as many people as we can. Get to your stations we leave shortly." He stood up. "Dismissed."
Aeryn joined the others as they left the room and headed onto the bridge. Taking her place as XO on the bridge she walked over to an empty station and started pulling up the readiness reports Hades wanted her to read. She needed to be sure the ship was ready for departure.
USS Saratoga
Kaden arrived on the bridge as all the crew around him stopped and stood at attention saluting him. "As you were." He told them walking to the Command chair. "What is our status?"
A Engineer approached him handing him a PADD. "All systems are ready to go, Colonel, however, we are still working on the Torque Sensors as requested." She replied.
Kaden could only grin as he took his seat in the chair. "It's okay, Lieutenant, I am willing to overlook it for now we got bigger things to worry about," He lifted up his index finger. "Just promise me they are top priority when we all get back home."
"Yes, Sir, I will see to it personally." The Engineer replied.
There was a few snickers from some of the bridge crew Kaden didn't mind however helped ease the tension of his men. He leaned back in his chair interlacing his fingers turning his head to the officer at the operations station. "Inform the fleet the Saratoga stands ready to move out."
“Aye Sir” The young woman at Ops acknowledged.
USS Endeavour
Commander Coleman was running through the last of the preflight sequences with some of the Bridge crew when out of the corner of his eye, he noticed that Lieutenant Matthews walk through one of the aft entrances to the Bridge.
As he finished up with one of the Conn Officers, he walked over to where Matthews was working. He input some information into the console in front of them and asked in a hushed tone, "How much do you know about the Romulans and their technology?"
Davik considered for a moment, "Enough to either use it well, or cause it serious damage, sir."
After speaking with Mr. Matthews, he knew that he would have to get in touch with Commander Solomon on the Ark Royal sometime before they reached their final destination. But, he knew that they wouldn't be getting anywhere without the ship being able to move.
Taking his seat in the CO position, Coleman tapped a few commands into his console before opening a comm link down to Engineering.
"Mr. Tovar, do we have the engines up and running, ready for departure?" Coleman asked, waiting to hear a response that wasn't immediate. He was about to ask again and check on the status of the comm system when he heard the voice of Lieutenant Tovar, the Vulcan engineering officer that was assigned to be the Endeavour's Chief Engineer for the duration of the mission come back and answer the question.
"Sir, our engines are up to operating power and we are ready to departure, on your order of course," Tovar said. It was almost as though he was making or playing a practical joke on his commanding officer, but then, Coleman remembered that Vulcans don't joke. So, he took that information and closed the comm line to Engineering and opened it to the fleet.
"Endeavour to the fleet. We are ready for departure and waiting for final orders to head out," Coleman said, waiting for the final order to head out, so he could get his people working on the virus that he found in the database that could help to implement to knock out communication from the Romulans.
USS Essex
Deela stepped off the turbolift, took two steps and stopped to take in the sight of the bridge. She smiled briefly, happy to be back on her ship. That smile lasted for only a brief moment when reality set in. Her bridge officers hadn’t arrived yet. Other crewmen were buzzing around the bridge, making sure that everything was in working order.
Deela had been told that her chair had not been changed out when they did the upgrades so she thought she’d make sure they didn’t. She sat down and smiled. Few minutes later, the turbolift door came open with Dr. Ventar stepping out of it. She had been requested by Deela to be acting Chief Medical Officer. She smiled, “Ah, Dr. Ventar, good to see you. Have you had a chance to check out Sickbay?”
Kisha smiled back, “I just came from there. Everything is in order and they have carried out my orders to the t.”
“Good. Glad to hear.” Deela knew how picky she was.
Kisha frowned a little, “Let’s just hope that my services won’t be needed.” She composed herself, “Anyway, I just wanted to check in with you. Let you know I’m here.”
“Thank you.” Deela stood up, “And welcome aboard.” Kisha nodded and left. Deela sat back down, waiting for the others to arrive.
The doors parted revealing Q toting a padd. He had chosen his route to the bridge deliberately since he'd been deposited right at the tactical station. Naturally, the Admiral was already present. He walked over to his station, relieving the man currently occupying it, and addressed the CO.
"Admiral, tactical is on standby and ready to go."
"Very good." She observed the new officer, "As soon as the other ships report in as ready, we will depart." She was still waiting for Lt. Commander Croesus to arrive. Engineering checked in, letting her know that the Essex was ready to go.
A few minutes more and the presence that was Lt Commander Croesus, Chief Operations Officer, arrived.
" Sorry I am late. My new assistant and I had to secure a untethered starship." Croesus explained. " What is our mission?"
"It is okay. You are here now. As for our mission we are going to destroy the Romulan Defense Base 8 near Deep Space Six. As soon as the other ships have checked in, we are leaving." Deela motioned to him, "Go to your station."
USS Ark Royal
The turbolift doors parted and Jack stepped onto the bridge of the Ark Royal. He took a moment to look around at the various officers on duty as they prepared the older Ambassador Class starship for launch. After being off duty for so long, he suddenly realised how much he'd been on board a working starship once more and also one that as about to go out into the great black unknown that is space.
Once he felt comfortable, Jack headed over to the centre seat and duly took his place. He pulled up the mission parameters on the chair arm screen and made sure that he was clear on the mission itself. It had been a long time since he had been a part of a starship crew that was acting in wartime and deliberately going out to strike a blow to the enemy.
Sitting forward on the chair, Jack pressed the comm button. "Bridge to Engineering, Mr Quan, hows my starship doing?" he asked. Down in Engineering, Lt Quan smiled as he replied.
"The old lady is ready for a good old fashioned bar brawl, Captain. We're good to go on your command, Engineering out," Quan confirmed.
Jack turned to face the Ops and Conn stations before him. "Ladies, are we ready to leave and join the fleet?" he asked them. Lieutenant Taloris, a Vulcan, turned to face her commanding officer with her usual stoned faced candour.
"Captain, Operations stands ready at your command. The Mission parameters have been made clear and the Operations Department will be working in conjunction with the Engineering department to ensure the Ark Royals voyage is as smooth as possible, whilst preparing the jamming devices alongside the USS Endeavour," She said. Jack couldn't help but grin. He knew Taloris was good at her job, however, there were times that she needed work on the details.
"Excellent. Lieutenant Raven?"
"Course laid in and helm ready, sir. We're ready for the go signal as soon as you give it," she responded.
"Just the way, I like it," Jack said. He pressed the shipwide comm button. "All hands, this is the Captain, standby for departure stations. We move out with the fleet to meet our objective. Stay sharp and stay focused. Let's show the fleet and our enemies why the old lady still has teeth," he said.
"Lt Raven, take us out and make sure we join the fleet please."
As everyone got to work, Jack sent a message to Deela on the Essex. "USS Ark Royal stands ready for fleet departure."
USS Yorktown
The Defiant-class USS Yorktown-F pulled away from Starbase 400 waiting for the rest of the departing ships to form up.
"Admiral. Message from General Klag aboard the IKS Gorkon, the Klingon Second Battlegroup has arrived at the rendezvous. Legate Toran has reported that the Cardassian Third Order will arrive soon. Rear Admiral Penar has signalled the Seventh Fleet will also arrive soon. Looks like we're going to be bringing up the rear." Rann reported.
"What about the Romulan Republic's Wing? Commander Tenok said she was sending fifty ships to support us in the attack." K'Temoc asked.
"We haven't heard from them," Rann replied.
K'Temoc nodded. "Alright, let Admiral T'Lar know. Helm, take us out and form up with the rest of our task force."
USS Falcon
Ezekiel walked onto the bridge of the USS Falcon, he glanced over at he main viewer. He could see the Klingon ship on the main viewer. He thought to himself, they have arrived. "Sam is our course plotted?"
"Yes sir, just waiting on Admiral's T'Lar's orders." Sam called out. Deep down he was concerned for the safety of the fleet. This was a bold plan for them.
Ezekiel then looked over to Sarah, his first officer. "Ready to go Number One?" He asked, hoping all the supplies and the crew were ready to depart. They should be at this stage.
“Yes,” Sarah replied. “I personally verified that we are stocked and all systems at one hundred percent.” She didn’t want to leave anything to chance.
"Very short turn around, barely enough time to resupply." Ezekiel said, then he looked at the main viewer. "Signal the Essex, we are ready." He called out, as he walked over to his command chair.
USS Luna
Lee had finally stepped onto the bridge of the Luna, he stopped for a moment before heading to the command chair "Inform Admiral T'Lar the Luna is ready."
Shraraoss Zh'vhinot at the conn spoke "Aye sir, sending the Admiral a message."
O’Riley had shown up a bit late due to another issue that needed to be fixed, but after running a few last minute checks he said, =/\O’Riley to Commodore Lee, sorry I’m late Croesus and I had an umbilical to fix that held me up. However, engine room is ready to go.”
USS Venator
Isaiah entered the bridge. He was happy to see Kalani at her post as his XO. "Report."
"All departments are ready for departure. We've got all stock on medical supplies and full compliments of weapons. We're converting a few bays as emergency and Transporters are ready for EBO."
He gave a nod. "All hands," he began. "We punch it in ten minutes." He turned off the coms. "Navigation get us ready."
"Aye sir."
USS Steadfast
Captain Harrison noticed that her crew was very tense. A lot of them were younger than what she was used to. The only one that had been in a fight was the tactical officer, "Bridge to engineering, are we ready to go?"
Engineering responded, "We had a wee problem but we've fixed it and she is ready." The engineer added, "And Captain? Godspeed."
Alex sighed quietly, "Thank you. Stand by." She got out of her chair and walked around the bridge and gave them words of encouragement. Many of them had never been in a war.
Like everyone else, she waited for T'Lar's orders to depart.
USS Essex
"Acknowledged Ark Royal."
T'Lar patiently waited for everyone to check in and fall into formation. All but the Luna had checked in. While she waited, she checked in with each station on her bridge. Everyone was about as ready as they could be.
Helm responded as well, "Course set, just say the word."
"Stand by." T'Lar stood up out of her chair and turned to Lt. Henshaw since he had been at his station long before Croesus, "Have all ships reported in and formed up?"
T'Lar addressed Lt. Cmdr. Croesus, "Contact all ships and let them know that are ready to depart."
" Aye, aye Admiral." Croesus nodded and immediately dispatched T'Lars orders to the fleet.
T'Lar gave her final order for departing, "My word is given."
