Personality & Traits
General Overview | Aidan Murphy is a man who often seems to be in denial of his faults, vices, and shortcomings. He never seems to take himself/life too seriously, often managing to find humor in even the most inappropriate/macabre of subjects. He has no filter and is seemingly oblivious of his own solecisms; and he is subject to proud assertion of his apathy if this is pointed out. His somewhat gruff, cynical, and apathetic demeanor is often misunderstood as being crass, rude, or careless, though he can be quite debonair when he feels like it. Aidan was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder Type II as a teenager, which often plagues him with bouts of severe depression and insomnia, the culmination of which often results in migraines. Both the bipolar disorder and the migraines are ailments that require frequent treatment - whether it is medication and/or psychotherapy, Aidan reluctantly does his best to keep on top of it. He inherited his father's legendary temper, though it takes a good deal to set it off. By all exterior appearances, Aidan has a drinking problem, though his tolerance has become so high that his drinking rarely, if ever, affects his ability to function as an upstanding member of Starfleet. Speaks with a heavy Irish brogue. |

Strengths & Weaknesses | If something is absurd, challenging, or against the grain, his interest is instantly piqued and he tends to go at such things with robust enthusiasm. However, he does become easily discouraged if failure even peeks around the corner at him, which renders him with a propensity for never finishing projects - unless they're absolutely imperative to his career and/or survival.
Ambitions | Aidan's long-term career ambitions are essentially limited to staying in Starfleet and earning ranks and experience along the way. He has zero aspirations of marrying or having a family, at least for right now.
Hobbies & Interests | Poker Baseball Archery Hand-to-hand combat Billiards Food (eating it mostly) Music - the more raucous the better (likes a lot of 'punk rock' for instance) DISLIKES: narcs, party-poopers, vegetarian/vegan cuisine, arrogance |

Personal History | Aidan was born Aidan James O'Connell in Castleknock, a suburb of Dublin, Ireland. As he tells it, Aidan came from a long line of alcoholics, including his mother and stepfather. He never knew his father and often blames his stepfather, who he describes as a 'maniac', for his personal and intellectual faults, as well as his self-loathing claims of 'extreme mental illness'. As a child he was sweet, for life hadn't tainted him until later in his teen years, when he began to rebel in every way imaginable if only to earn the attention of his oft preoccupied, narcissistic mother. As he became an adult he started to realize that rebellion wouldn't get him very far, so in one final act of defiance toward his parents he moved to the United States to join the ranks of Starfleet, hoping to become something more than another drunk with a bad temper. After joining Starfleet he dropped the name O'Connell, adopting his late father's surname Murphy, instead. It was a cathartic severing of the ties for him - never again would he speak to the parents who raised him. |
