Mission:
Episode 113 - No One Left Behind
Location: Starbase 400, Tactical Operations
Timeline: MD1 - 1500hrs
ON:
Mike arrived in Tactical Operations and nodded to Draven who had already set up the main display screen and holo-displays of the facilities.
The next person to arrive was Commander Stark, who wasn't even assigned to the mission.
"Commander, is there something I can help you with?" Mike asked.
Stark held up a newly designed comm-badge. The delta was thin and silver in color while the background was also darker color than the comm-badge Starfleet had been using for the last twenty-five years. Instead of the background being horizontal from the delta, it was vertical and down from the delta's peak.
"Very nice." Mike said as he looked.
"Commander Wayne and I spent a lot of time on this. Not to get into technical aspects, it does everything you asked for." Stark replied. "A micro-holo-emitter as been added to the comm-badge so this badge can also work as a holo-PADD. Power cells were improved for the extra power needed as well."
Stark put on the new comm-badge and showed off the holo-PADD functions to the Fleet Admiral. "We even managed to include onboard memory so if the wearer was cut off from a ship or other facilities they could still keep notes, logs, etc."
"I'm impressed Commander. Well done." Mike replied.
"We've manufactured enough for all Starbase 400 personnel." Stark added.
"Send it to Starfleet Command, let's see if we can get it approved for fleet wide distribution." Mike replied. "And get them distributed to the crew as quickly as possible."
Stark smirked and handed Mike one for him to use. "I'm sure we'll still see PADDs around for a while, but I think this is the next step in Starfleet gear."
Mike nodded, "Before you know it, there will be another new uniform too."
Both men laughed, as Mike put on his new comm-badge.
"Maybe one day we'll even be able to integrate a tricorder's functions into the comm-badge's holo-display." Stark envisioned.
"Why stop there, let's add a transporter function to it too." Mike added with a laugh.
"Looks like a mission briefing. Send me the ship list and I'll get them distributed to them and Ops first." Stark said.
Mike nodded, "Will do. Thank you Commander."
Stark tossed one over to Draven as he was leaving Tactical Operations while Mike brought up the ship assignments on one of the smaller displays beside the main one on the wall. He then waited for everyone to arrive.
Coleman was down in Science Lab 7 when his PADD chirped alive and saw that he was needed down in Tactical Operations. Smiling, as he had been working on several projects down in science, especially with that stuff that he and Pulmeri found down on that planet quite some time ago.
Grabbing a PADD or two from the table in front of him, he walked up to Tactical Operations and saw that he was beaten out by Admiral Bremer and several of his fellow crewmen. He saw them handing around something that looked like a new commbadge and when he got close enough, Coleman asked, "Is that the new commbadge that I've been hearing about? Can I see one?"
The door's slid open again as in steps Xalanth. You didn't need to know the lizard to tell he was happy his eyes locked on a padd. " Hello everyone." He said as he headed to the replicator.
Following on behind her husband Kah’lyn offered a warm smile to all present, “Good afternoon everyone.” At almost six and a half months pregnant she was expecting to be left aboard the station, though she certainly hoped not. She took a seat grateful to take the weight off her feet.
Five minutes later Ariana joined the briefing offering a warm smile, and a nod to all present as she went straight to a seat with PADD in hand ready to take notes on anything she might need to know.
Tim arrived right behind Ariana, Tim nodded to those that were all ready present and quickly took a seat. Grabbing his PADD he looked over a few notes and got ready to prepare for whatever was to come.
Dee arrived just after Tim. She had a freshly brewed cup of coffee. She smiled at Ariana as she took a seat.
Before Mike could say anything he saw Commander MacLeod enter.
Mike walked over to Mac, he knew he'd have a question or two.
Mac help up the PADD he was carrying, "Did you mean to assign the Vanguard to this mission?"
Mike smirked, "Yes."
"The USS Repulse arrived yesterday. Starfleet wants us to send the Vanguard to Earth for decommissioning at once." Mac replied.
Mike nodded, "I know, but they can wait. I'd rather use the ship we know than the one we haven't even had a chance to take out on a test flight yet."
"Amen to that." Mac replied with a smirk.
Mike walked back to the front of the room while waiting on the other s to arrive.
Percy was in engineering going through some routine checks. He picked up his pad and wanted to head to a new level to do some check when he saw a message being displayed to come to ops. He stopped his checks and headed to OPS.
Few moments later he step through the door. He then greeted everyone present with a nod. He looked around and found an empty chair, headed towards it and sat down.
Deezel, who was sat next to Ariana, leaned towards her. "I am not sure why I have been asked to attend. I am only an Ensign." She said.
Ariana smiled. “Just because you’re an Ensign, it doesn’t make you any less important than any of us. We’ll find out soon enough.”
"I guess you're right. I just don't see myself as important enough to be included in a meeting with the senior officer and the top brass." Dee commented.
“Oh you’re important, or you wouldn’t be here” Ariana smiled warmly. “Admiral Bremer obviously needs you as part of his plan.”
"I wonder if my newly acquired six life times of knowledge and experience might be of use to Admiral Bremer." she said smiling.
Coleman overheard the conversation between one of the newest members of the crew and Ariana. Walking over and taking the seat next to them, Coleman said, "Sorry to interrupt, but I just wanted to introduce myself. I'm Lieutenant Commander Coleman, the Chief Science Officer. As for why you're here, everyone is important, no matter what department they hail from. Just cause you're just recently joined means you've got a ton more knowledge now!"
Deezell smiles at Coleman. "True but I was joined in an emergency situation and without any training as an initiate. So, I am doing my best to handle things. " She explained.
“I wouldn’t worry too much” Kah’lyn offered a smile from where she sat. “At least you’re not bulging at the seams like me!” She grinned a wry grin. “Welcome to Starbase 400 by the way, I’m Kah’lyn Chiara-Rivers.”
"Thank you. I'm not bulging at the seems but I have had four children, well Deezell hasn't but previous hosts Lerani and Azrel did, two each. But in the case of Lerani, who had twins, I remember being considerably bigger than you are right now. You look about 6 and half months is that right? " Deezell commented.
Kah’lyn was impressed. “Correct!” She smiled. “A six and a half month Romulan/Human/Klingon hybrid.” She offered husband Croesus a gleaming smile before looking back at Deezell.
"Hmmm quite a mix. I am sure the baby will be super cute. I hope to meet them when they are born." She commented.
“Oh I’m sure you’ll get to meet my daughter eventually.l” Kah’lyn grinned.
After Deela's upsetting meeting, she had to compose herself before walking into Tactical OPS. Once she accomplished that, she walked in and looked around to see who had arrived. She wasn't as late as she thought according who showed up so far. She took her usual seat and sat down, not making much eye contact. She could hear conversations around her but didn't engage. Her mind went back to her previous conversation.
Ariana’s attention turned to Deela as she sat down nearby. “Admiral T’Lar, is everything alright?”
Commander Grian arrived and sat next to Deezell. The two acknowledged each other. Grian sat patiently for the briefing to begin.
Deela looked over at Ariana, "Not really. Commander Solomon is missing and even though I have an idea who nabbed him, the big wigs won't let me go find him. I hate having my hands tied like this but orders are orders." Deela added, "Sorry. I don't mean to unload on you. Thank you for asking."
Ariana nodded. “That’s alright Admiral. Anytime you need to talk you know where to find me.”
Coleman looked over at T'Lar and Ariana talking. He could catch a few words here and there, about something about finding Solomon. Coleman hoped that he was okay, but didn't want to ask her until later on.
Lee entered the room, looking around for a moment then walked over standing against a back wall
Xalanth had returned with a breakfast plate and a mug of warm ale. Seeing Kah’lyn he stopped to talk with his friend. " How are you doing Kah’lyn? The little one giving you trouble?"
Kah’lyn gave a warm smile as she looked at Xalanth. “I’m fine, thank you Xalanth. The little one, as you put it, has the kick of a championship fighter but I can’t really complain!”
Anna Woodhouse heard the conversation as she entered the briefing and took a seat. She had been running late because she was in the middle of a medical procedure. Looking around, she nodded at a few people and mouthed an apology to the admiral.
Ezekiel silently sneaked into the room. He walked over to Anna. He had a big grin on his face. Even though it had only been a couple of hours since they had lunch together, it felt like a life time since he saw her last. With a big grin on his face, he walked right over to her and gave a big smile.
Deezell can't help look around the room at all the officers assembled and notice all the senior level rank insignias on their collars. She was feeling somewhat out of her depth. She tried to remain calm and try to draw on the confidence from the previous hosts to help her.
Entering the already busy room, Dr Blake took a quick look around at the mostly unfamiliar faces before he found a spot near the back to stand. On the way he caught a glimpse of Counsellor Monroe, offering her a friendly wave and a nod before he moved out of sight.
Vasha didn't recognize anyone in the room - save Xalanth, of course. She presumed them to be the rest of the tactical crew, understandable given the supposed nature of this briefing. She was to play shepherd to all of them, she realized, at Xalanth's side of course but that made the job itself no less large.
Tim looked around as he felt the emotions in the room as everyone was waiting for the meeting to begin. He felt his wife and children and he mentally sent them a quick hi, and then put his own mental blocks in place to keep him more in check with the emotions that were bombarding him.
"Finally! Sheesh, this place is BIG!" Diana huffed to herself when she FINALLY found the Tactical OPS. Even though she had a map, her short-term still had issues even after six years of a steady life. After quietly slipping into the room, Diana found an unoccupied chair and wiggled it into the corner, clutching her PADD nervously. "I have no idea why I'm here. I'm even newer than Deezell! Calm down, Diana, you wouldn't be here if they didn't need you," Diana took a calming breath, and waited for the meeting to begin.
Once everyone had arrived, Mike tapped a few buttons on the control panel. The big wall display behind him lit up with a map of the area, a dotted line indicating the flight path to the Dewa system, and to the side a list of ship names, NCC numbers, and a profile of each ship.
"Thank you all for coming. I'll keep this brief because we all have work to do. Starfleet Command has asked us to send ships to the Dewa system to investigate rumors and reports of Starfleet POWs being held there."
A holo-display of the Dewa system lit up above the control panel. It showed the Dewa system with two planets highlighted.
"This is the Dewa system. It's within Romulan space close to the border of Federation territory and the 'transit corridor'. Dewa II is Class K. They have a few surface enclosures but most of the base is below surface. The planet's atmosphere has low level radiation that interferes with sensors and the bed rock doesn't help. It was raided by Starfleet and the Klingons during the war, but only to keep it from being built up. Dewa II is reported to be a Tal Shiar facility however other reports indicate the facility is actually under the control of the ultra-secretive Zhat Vash operatives, not Tal Shiar. Dewa VI is home to an orbital facility specializing in smaller craft construction. However, the other reports suggest that the shipyard has expanded and currently building larger ships including d'Deridex and Valdor type Warbirds as well as Mogai and the newer Dia Vectau type cruisers." Mike paused while everyone looked over the maps, took notes, and thought about the upcoming mission.
"We will send two task forces. I'll lead the Pegasus, Yorktown, Saratoga, Endeavor, Cutlass, Tripitz, Tyr, Ark Royal, and Buccaneer to Dewa II where we'll land Marines and Security to rescue anyone held prisoner then evacuate them to medical personnel standing by. Admiral T'Lar will lead the Essex, Luna, George Washington, Falcon, Kearsarge, Constantinople, and Conqueror to Dewa VI to make sure any ships there stay off our backs, and act as a supporting force if we're fired upon." Mike paused again, he knew people were making notes now.
"I do not expect a fire fight, in space or on the ground. The war is over and per the terms of the updated Treaty of Algeron, Starfleet has the right to fully investigate rumors of POWs. Questions?" Mike looked around.
Deela sat quietly as everyone began to ask their questions. She didn't have any of her own at the moment. If she had any, she'd talk to Bremer later.
"Does Starfleet or the Federation know approximately how many POW's there are? I know that some ships are larger than others, but if there are large amounts of them to beam up, it'll take longer for the transporter teams to get everyone up," Coleman asked, raising concerns about the total transport times for each ship.
Tim looked over the information and thought about the various things that would happen. Looking over he said, “Has the presence of POW’s been confirmed. I hate the thought that we could be walking into a trap. We may be at peace but anything can happen.”
Mike shared the concern, "No, that's part of our job. We look for the presence of POWs, or if any ever were any there. If they are, we bring them home. If not, make sure we bring all of our people home."
"Oh boy, this going to be fun," Diana thought sarcastically, nibbling on her nails as she made some notes in her PADD. "I still fail to see why I'm here. Sure, I'm in Security...but this still feels like an 'above my paygrade' type thing," Diana took a deep breath, and went back to listening, taking notes, and drawing pictures to help her remember. Diana had learned that she could remember things better with pictures added to her notes than just having a page full of words.
Percy listens to the mission briefing. He saw that he will be on board the Ark Royal as the CEO. He made quite a few notes on his pad. "This will be an interesting mission," he thought to himself, but he still wondered what POW meant. So he looked it up and found it. After that it made sense.
Alicia looked towards Mike. “If we do find POW’s there, who knows what physical and mental condition they could be in. I’d recommend proceeding with extreme caution, for all we know some of those POW’s could be suffering with Stockholm syndrome. Identifying with their captors, even supporting them.”
"Agreed, completely. Not only will we have a full complement of medical staff, but also counselors." Mike paused a moment, "That said, I also want full blood and DNA screenings of anyone recovered, I don't want the Romulans using this opportunity to plant a spy."
Kah’lyn was sitting quietly taking it all in, just the mention of having contact with her people again made her skin crawl. After what her father and his XO tried to do to her she wasn’t in the mood to trifle with any Romulans.
Xalanth raised his hand from his seat. " Will we need to send in a ground team to confirm the POW's." He asked already wanting to get his TR101 from it's locker. He'd seen what the pact had done to POW's.
Coleman spoke back up and said, "I'm assuming that ground troops and security forces will need to be deployed because our sensors are good, but aren't perfect. We'll have to make sure they're there and to be able to extract them once we confirm they're there."
Ezekiel looked over to the admiral. They would be supporting him this go around. This was not a typical mission for the Falcon. Most of his missions were patrol based. This mission had the possibility of combat. He needed to make sure his crew was ready. He was already contemplating in his mind to have a few battle drills, before they arrived in the Dewa System. For the moment though, he knew he should chime in. "The Tal Shair are no slouches, their surveillance is top notch. Will be real hard for us to just slip in and deploy troops. How do we plan on getting by there surveillance?" Ezekiel asked, knowing a fire fight to the planet would only jeopardize their people.
"Sir" Grian spoke up. "I have to agree with Ezekiel. This is not to going to be easy at all. The Tal Shair have extremely sophisticated sensors. I am pondering ideas on how we might accomplish this but I am also interested in any plan we may already have." she added.
"Could we possibly use the slipstream drives to get us past their sensors quick enough to be able to get our people in and out before they even notice we're there? Or mix that with some of the cloaking devices that the Romulans gave us?" Coleman asked, thinking of several ways to get past the Romulan State Police, the Tal Shiar.
Then, after speaking, Coleman thought about something that his brother used years ago when they were chasing the Romulans. Coleman said, "Well, could we potentially write a virus that would knock out the Tal Shiar sensors or make it look like we're something that we're not? My brother used something similar a couple years ago to knock the Romulans systems a couple years ago when they tried to steal the plans to the Slipstream technology when he was onboard the Starbase."
Mike looked around, "Anyone else?"
With no one asking additional questions, Mike ended the briefing. "Once we arrive in system and can scout the facilities, we'll assign teams. However, expect Colonel Lennox to lead on and Lieutenant Xalanth to lean another, so be ready. We'll depart tomorrow, time of departure will be sent to you all soon. Dismissed."
