Mission:
Episode 98 - A Raid on Peace
Location: Tarod IX / Various Ships
Timeline: MD1, 1600hrs
ON:
Aboard the USS Kearsarge drop ships, which were moments from deploying their troops, General Hurd took this chance to address all his people. Climbing to the highest point he could find, he cleared his throat and began to speak. "Marines, we are about to head into a hellstrorm of enemy fire, and the Remans do not retreat, so we will be fighting for every square inch of ground we take". Taking a moment to let that sink in he continued, ''We will prevail, we will win, and I make to solem promises to you, one is I will be the first boot on the ground and last To leave, and 2 living or dead we are all going home''. Pausing, he asked in a booming voice, "So who is willing to follow me in to combat, to battle, to glory!!!"
Freya looked at Hurd and smiled, he certainly knew how to give a rousing speech. It was certainly working on her nerves.
Kaden didn’t bother saying anything not that the General was trying to do what he did rallying the men to fight but his days in his MARSOC unit had taught him silence was the best approach and let his fighting do the talking. Plus the odd choice he used for weapons wasn’t reassuring either they belonged in a museum or in Kaden’s display case of antique firearms in his office but not on a battlefield anymore. Of course Kaden used a chemrail pistol that was used during the third world war on Earth against the ECON forces as a back up piece. But beyond that he could never see himself use relics like that to take on Remans when good a old phaser was just as good if not better
Noticing the look on Kaden's face, he asked sternly, "Is their a problem?"
“Nothing at all.” Kaden replied he wasn’t going to debate the man’s choice of what he brought to fight nor did he really care. It was not the time or place to to discuss such repetitive things anyway they was dropping into a hoard of Remans and he just wanted to focus on getting his hide out alive.
The right wing of 3rd and 4th patrol, for the most part had defended the rear, but for Major McDaniel it was not over as three of 4th squads crsft were unaccounted. Returning to,their last course he soon learned why as he detected the Reman cloaking field hiding inside the planets moon.
His radio jammed, McDaniel altered course to avoid the same fate, he could feel a powerful voice entering his mind. A Reman mind trick.
USS Ark Royal
Jack stood in the shuttlebay as the combined Operations and Engineering first response team prepared themselves to get ready for the run to the outpost. Whilst this was the toughest situation he was in, Jack understood Holly's reasoning for going.
He walked over to her as she finished preparations. "Come to see us off, Captain?" she asked him.
"No, just to make sure it's clear that you get down there in one piece and then make sure that everyone comes back in one piece," Jack cautioned her. "I don't want to lose anyone so soon into the mission."
"Don't worry, that's not my plan at all. As soon as we're down, I'll make sure we stay put behind the marines and report back on what the situation is there. We'll be back before you know it," she confirmed to Jack.
He tried to smile, knowing they were about to leave. "Very well, good hunting, Commander." As the rest of the team boarded the Shuttle, Jack walked over to a comm panel on the wall and selected the Kearsarge on a secure channel. "USS Kearsarge, this is Captain Solomon on the Ark Royal. The Ops/Engineering Team is ready to go on your signal," he reported over the secure comm channel.
"This is General Hurd we are preparing to begin our assault on the landing areas, please stand by, General Hurd out."
USS Mercy
Hades and Carolyn stood in the transporter room waiting for the all clear. Once it came they gave a nod to the transporter chief. The hum and whine of the transporter started slowly shimmering the first group off the platform in the transporter room allowing the second group a chance to take position.
The blissful darkness seemed to last a moment as their consciousness materialized on the planet below. Hades took seemed to lose his breath as the sight of the battered location. There were wounded everywhere. He looked at Carolyn. "Let's triage. Code them yellow, red and green. Let's get to it!" He shrugged. "Sorry I know you're away lead."
As the transporter released them, Doctor Corrigan released a slow breath as she took in the sight. Yet years of training meant it was less than a heartbeat. Quickly checking to ensure everyone had transported safely, she signalled for everyone to begin triage. "Remember, you do not go anywhere the marines have not cleared!" she called out to them.
She looked up at Hades, "including you. Let's go try to save some people. Be safe."
Without another word she was off, hurrying towards Ashley, the nurse signalling for them.
Rol, who had some medical training, was down in the first wave. He hurried with the green team as they only new basic medical. He could help with the low injuries. The pain he saw was overwhelming and it was then that he was glad he was not Betazoid.
Planet's Surface
As the Kearsage marines finally got their feet on the ground Freya was taken aback by the sight that lay before her. The blast to her senses was enormous causing her to momentarily freeze where she stood. It was only when a wounded person right next to her touched her leg that she snapped out of her shock and into her medic role.
In her backpack she carried the same colour coded cards to grade the wounded, so as quickly as she could she set about assessing those she could see. Inside her mind, she could feel the pain and torment of those around her but she could also feel the Remans trying to get past her defences.
Kaden jumped out of the transport rifle raised and crouched down waving for his men to get off there was Reman weapons fire flying about around him as it was apparent he was certainly going to be under heavy fire. Thus far are his men was off the transports and on the ground still breathing he motioned to the ridge that could provide some protection from the oncoming fire. “Get to the ridge, go!” Rushing as fast as they could they ran as fast as they could Kaden could see Freya was already tending to wounded as they ran by but he had to focus on his job and try his best to not worry about her so much.
As much as Braxton had told Freya to stay close she could see a casualty at ground level some distance from their current position. Seeing Carolyn across the battlefield tending wounded she kept herself low as she skirted around to Carolyn. “I’ve got wounded by our beam in point that need to go up to the Mercy!”
Looking up, her uniform already bloodstained, Carolyn glanced over at the area Freya pointed to. "They will be beamed up based on the tag," she assured the marine before resuming her work, one hand clamping an artery as she opened up another section of her kit bag. "Don’t worry, we'll get to everyone but yell if you need me. Stay safe, okay?"
“I will" Freya offered a brief smile before skirting off in a different direction. One way or another she planned to make it to the casualty she’d seen, the nearest marine group she could see was Kaden’s. “Kaden!” She skirted alongside her husband. “Can you give me enough cover to get over there?” She pointed to the casualty. “I need to get to that casualty.”
Kaden looked over the ridge looking at the wounded down below he could see another place that was adequate for cover from the Remans. Turning to the two Marines next to him he motioned to the other ridge beyond. “You two with me up and over to the next ridge the rest of you hold position!” Getting his feet Kaden ran over the ridge blasting two Remans in the process with his phaser running up to the wounded and thowing himself onto his belly while the two Marines ran over to the ridge and threw themselves against it. Providing covering fire as Kaden waved to Freya to move up and join him next to the wounded person.
Waiting for her chance Freya took it nodding to Kaden so that he could move on. "Hey there" she offered a smile, the officer was in bad shape and he was still gripping a knife covered with blood in his hand. "Let me help you..." her eyes widened as she realised his I juries were self inflicted. It seemed the Remans had claimed a victim by foul means. "Did you...." She looked away into her kit and moments later the same knife was embedded in her side, the officer dropping dead shortly afterwards. She quickly used what she needed pulling out the knife and packing her wound. No one would realise the blood was hers and she could keep going for a while with no one any the wiser.
Braxton worked side by side with Hades as they assessed and catalogued the wounded. Hades seemed to be in a world of his own. Surgical kits out pain medication, splints. It was old and new working together. "Braxton I need cover."
Braxton gave a nod. He kept his rifle trained feeling the Reman tentacles trying to get to his mind. He shot a few times to clear the surroundings and then helped Hades moved those that were transportable to the transport location. They'd set up medical emitters so that as soon as there were people there the ship would take them aboard. Braxton looked up at Hades. "What the hell?"
Hades shook his head. "Damn it! We need to set the bone. Give him 55ccs of Emedafine he's Catian. We can't risk any more." He looked at the patient. "This will hurt. Try to stay still." He looked at Braxton who set they hypo to the man's neck and then once the hiss had complete Hades quickly set the bone. They moved the man to the transport site.
Braxton watched Hades stiffen. "What is wrong?"
"Take over here." There was no room for bargaining. He hurried towards a cave tending to wounded as he went and having teams transport and pick them up. Once in the clearing he looked around and entered the cave. He closed his eyes. There were Remans here....wounded. He sighed. They might be the enemy but he was a doctor. He'd help whoever needed it. Besides there was a familiar voice trying to brake his mental defenses. He hoped he was wrong.
"Make sure a neonatal team is on standby, they will need to deliver straight away if they are going to have a chance of saving the baby," Dr Corrigan ordered as she watched two medical techs move in to take the latest casualty to the transport area.
The woman, heavily pregnant, was unlikely to survive the hour. But the baby... maybe they had bought enough time. She choose to believe they had. Because right now they were surrounded but a lot of dead and a lot of suffering.
She moved on to the next patient, and the next. Years aboard a medical ship, responding to disasters and trauma had made this a sad type of second nature. Being able to decide who should be prioritised over another. As close to god as anyone could or should get.
Movement out of the corner of her eye catching her attention. A flash of blue just as it disappeared out of sight. Frowning, her eyes sweeped the immediate area, doing a head count. Cursing under her breath she snatched up her kit, hurrying after Hades. Where the hell was he going?
Hades entered the cave and soon he heard voices. As he broke into the clearing he saw a Reman on the ground surrounded by two who were about to shoot. He drew his phaser recognizing the one on the ground. "I would back away." He said.
The two turned to face him. He felt them lick at his mind and resisted the urge to shake his head. He fired hitting one in the shoulder. When he felt his mind clear as the other Reman, clearly surprised, stepped back. Hades gave him no chance. He hit him with heavy stun and then the other man. He tended to the first one's shoulder and then turned to the one on the ground. "What are you doing here!" He said angrily.
The other Reman seemed to look away. "You're always saving my a...."
Hades backhanded him. "What are you doing here?"
The Reman growled but sat himself up indicating his leg. "I didn't know they would be this bad. I just wanted...to go home to be a Reman."
Hades sighed, "But you're not damn it! None of us is what we were. I take it you turned on them."
He sighed. "Yeah. Deeper in the cave there are more people. I kept them safe." Hades sighed. He treated the leg and gave a nod hurrying deeper into the cave. He'd deal with Lareg later.
Corrigan skidded to a stop when she had heard phaser fire, closer than she would have liked. Worried Hades was in trouble she moved closer to the source of the commotion, keeping close to the trees. A deep frown appeared as she watched Hades, trying to make sense of what she was seeing. She winced as he struck the Reman on the ground, saying something she couldn't hear.
She had heard him lose his temper, shout at some of the nurses. But this?
A million questions ran through her mind but she pushed them aside as the pair headed into a nearby cave. "You get us killed I am going to haunt you till the end of time," she told Hades retreating figure, waiting as long as she dared before following the pair into the darkness of the cave. A few more minutes, just to be sure he was alright and then she would go back...
As they walked deeper into the cavern he heard voices. He'd felt Lareg walk behind him...or more like limp. When they got close Lareg called out. "All clear!"
As they rounded the corner Hades gasped. There must have been close to..."There are a hundred people here."
"Seventy five." Lareg said. "This is A...doctor from a Starbase. Doctor Hades."
Hades sighed, "It's going to be alright." He heard a sound from behind them and turned phaser at the ready. "Carolyn!" He drew his palm over his face just before she could respond the two Reman's he thought were stunned stepped into view. Hades, with lightening reflexes shot forward, grabbed Carolyn and pushed her behind him. Lareg and he launched himself at the two Remans.
Her eyes moved from the phaser to the mass of people gathered behind Hades and the Reman man. She opened her mouth to speak but before she could utter a word Hades grabbed hold of her, pulling her deeper into the cave. She barely had time to even get her bearings when she turned, seeing Hades launch himself at one of the two Remans.
Eyes wide, realising how close the two Remans had been without her even knowing, she dropped her kit down on to the cave floor and reached for her phaser.
Lareg scuffled with the smaller of the two while Hades tackled the larger one. His hands moved lightening fast connecting with the Reman. His Vulcan strength an asset. He kicked out only to have his leg caught in mid air and twisted. It was painful but nothing was broken. He then felt the hands of the Reman on his head. He cursed as the Reman's mind connected with him. Reaching out he managed to get a hold of the Reman's head. He linked minds with the man and within seconds the Reman screamed and pulled back. Hades fell to the ground exhausted, his head throbbing. He looked over at Lareg who was fighting the other Reman. Before he could help the two men went over a steep drop and fall fast with a sickening thud. "Lareg!" He would have run to the side of the cliff but the Reman he had fought pulled a blade embedding it deem in the doctor's back.
A phaser whine filled the cave and the Reman vaporized. Braxton stood with his phaser rifle high. "Hades!"
Carolyn watched in horror as the metal glinted just a fraction of a second before the knife was driven into Hades back. Her head snapped around as a shot flashed through the air, striking the Reman and vaporising him instantly. "Braxton help me!" Carolyn shouted as she grabbed her kit, running to Hades and throwing herself down on her knees beside him even as she had her tricorder out and her kit pulled open.
Braxton called in a unit of Marines and then dropped to his knees. He was white as a ghost. Hades was more then his cousin, he was closer then a brother. He was not going to loose him.
Hades' eyes flickered. He locked eyes with Carolyn. "HH...Help Braxton. Get these people to safety. Co....come back for me later." He blinked.
Braxton looked at Carolyn. "We need to get him back to the ship. We cannot remove the blade."
Hades allowed himself one more push. "I...outrank you....both...." His words were a struggle to get out as a small trickle of blood left the corner of his mouth. "Get th...them......o....ou....out." His eyes closed his breathing slowing.
Braxton swore violently in French just as a team of Marines came through into the cave. He stood. "Get these people to safety."
Freya had noticed the call for marines, following on behind she was shocked to see Hades down as she moved to help those in the cave.
There was so much activity around them, a million distractions. Blocking them out, Carolyn worked quickly, the tricorder on the ground beside tracking the deteriorating life signs. Every heartbeat fuelling blood loss. “Have the Mercy ready to transport us straight to OR1,” she called out, trusting someone would do as she ordered while she prepped another hypo.
Back on the Mercy
T'Mira, who was on the Mercy got the call about Hades. Her heart hammering in her chest she ordered the transport. She looked over at Rain Sentinel the chief engineer. She gave an undiscernible nod letting the woman go to sickbay. T'Mira herself stood and paced. She couldn't leave the bridge. She tried to focus on the job at hand. Her brother would want her at her station. She had to keep the Mercy safe for his sake.
Planet's Surface
“Standby,” she said, hesitating to look up at Braxton, “trust me, we are not losing him. I promise.”
Braxton looked back at Carolyn. Trust was not something he gave lightly but Hades trusted the woman. "Take care of him." He said watching them shimmer away.
He turned and strode over to Freya ignoring the fact that his uniform was soaked in the green blood of a man he admired more then any, a man who was by all rights more a brother to him then his own twin. He turned to Freya. "Come on Cher. Let's get these people to safety."
Freya nodded doing her best to ignore the pain in her side from her own wound. Starting to move people out She gravitated towards the rear of the group to put space between herself and Braxton so she could take a moment to change the dressing she’d got on her side.
“You’re hurt!” The voice of one of those at the rear of the group almost made Freya leap out of her skin.
“It’s nothing...please keep moving!” She gestured the young woman onwards. “You have to go, now go!” Freya watched as the line kept slowly moving, although she was starting to feel worse for wear. The line was almost gone before blood loss got the better of her and she collapsed into an unconscious heap on the floor.
“Help someone please!!” A survivor from the group rushed over to Braxton. “It’s the marine! She’s hurt!”
Braxton moved quickly. He swore as he saw the wound. Working quickly he got the bleeding under control and carried Freya out. He'd let Hurd or Jackson chew her out about hiding her wounds. Right now he had to focus.
It didn't take long to get the group out and to the medical team for assessment. He handed Freya to one of the medics where she was taken to level two. He wanted to stay and make sure she was alright but...time....and circumstances would not permit. He had to get back into the fray. Med-kit in hand he headed out where his Marine and surgical skills could be put to use.
Kaden and the marines was pressed against the ridge Reman weapons fire zipping over their heads keeping them pinned to the ground. Judging from the looks of things the Reman attackers was close the sounds of plasma weapon discharges nearby only confirmed it. Pulling a photon grenade out Kaden activated the fuse and tossed it over the ridge hard as he could. “FIRE IN THE HOLE!” Everyone including himself covered up as the grenade exploded followed by dying screams and the sound of something heavy landing behind him. Lifting his head Kaden looked over his shoulder seeing the smoldering tattered bloody husk of a dead Reman at his feet.
By then the rest of Kadens men from the other ridge joined him and pressed themselves against the second ridge. “Nice thinking, Sir!” Kaden could hear Vesker saying offering him a smile. However the Marine Captain was more focused on the Reman menace at hand as he slowly lifted his head to look over the ridge. He could see a number of dead Remans scattered everywhere from around the blast of his grenade. Kaden didn’t have time to look any longer as more Remans started shooting at him off in the distance before he was pulled back behind the ridge. It seemed for the time being Kaden and his men was pinned down and was unable to move forward or fall back.
Ignoring the incoming fire and his own safety, did not stop, he ran full bore up over the ridge. Catching two Remans in his sights, he let off a 3 round burst from his M-4, killing both Instantly. Not even stopping, he yelled to his men, "Marines, get up here keep advancing, and fight now, that's an order!
Kaden could see a Marine from their side recklessly charging towards the Remans from a distance but couldn’t tell who it was. But it certainly caught a number of Reman attackers off guard as they focused on him or her wondering if the idiot had lost their mind or something. Either way it left a opening for Kaden and his Marines to take advantage of as they got to their feet shooting the distracted Reman soldiers able to start pushing forward to the outpost cutting down every enemy in sight. One of the Marines next to Kaden was shot in the leg falling down holding it in pain causing him to pull him out of danger of being finished off. “MEDIC!!”
Killing two more Remans at point blank range, General Hurd reloaded his weapon and kept on shooting. He had advanced about 500 yards ahead of where he previously was. Over the roar of weapons fire, he hit his combadge and said, "General Hurd to Captain Ross, detach 7 of your best men and send them my way, youll know where from all the gunfire, explosions, and dead Remans you will see along the way, and that is a direct order, General Hurd out." Almost as soon as he had finished speaking he was tackled from the side, a viscious hand to hand fight started.
Braxton left Freya dealing with the wounded. Some of the other medics were there so when the order cam from Hurt Braxton was one of seven sent. He moved quietly towards Hurd. He found Hurt pined down by fire. Managing to push closer he looked at Hurd. "The Calvary is here."
Looking over his shoulder as he sliced a Reman's throat and tossed the body to the ground, He said, "Good, now lets kill the rest of them".
Kaden wasn’t going to leave the Marine injured by himself he activated his armor’s comm system. “Henry, you still out there? I got a injured Marine and we are under heavy fire on my end I need you and six men to Hurd’s location.” He waved his free arm to anyone nearby hoping Braxton or anyone working in medical could see him. “I NEED A MEDIC OVER HERE GOT A WOUNDED MAN!”
USS Mercy, OR 1
"Treating a patient by stopping the heart, it appears there been a change to standard treatment protocols since I was last activated? Or have we gone back to the dark ages?" the EMH mused as he began to work, calling out orders to the nurses who had been standing by for their arrival.
Unlike every other person in the room, he had no attachment to the humanoid patient he now had to treat. His programming did not differentiate, such a protocol would be contrary to some of his most basic principles. Consequently he worked efficiently, speaking only when it was absolutely necessary.
"Watch for -"
"Doctor Corrigan, one step closer and you will risk infecting our patient," the EMH intoned as he shot a look in her direction. "Field work and sterile are not two words that often go together. Now, leave me to work. I do not want or need a backseat driver!"
Carolyn glared at him as someone tugged on her arm. Cadet Winters was pulling her towards the prep room, a freshly replicated uniform under one arm. "Do not mess this up," she told the hologram as she left Hades in his care. She did not want to, but she also couldn't stay when there was so much still to do. And the EMH could do everything she - or any other surgeon - could do. But it still felt wrong to leave Hades.
"You stay and you watch over him, got it," she told the cadet. "Any change, I want to know."
"Of course," Chloe nodded, turning her back to give some privacy as Corrigan changed. "You are going back down?"
"Second I get a fresh kit. But I'll be back before you know it. Just yell if you need me."
The EMH worked quickly and efficiently. The procedure was to the letter and the doctor Hades' responses typical. Harold Rogers stood off to the side with Rain Sentinel. He leaned in so only Rain could hear. "Once the doc is out of the woods make sure that EMH gets a diagnostic."
Rain gave a nod. "Has anyone told the council?"
The doctor shook his head. "Engineering. Go. I'll let you know once the EMH is done."
Rain headed out as the EMH worked to revive the failing doctor.
Someone was inside Chucks head and that someone didn't esnt him to pursue looking for his lost craft. But Chuck persevered and plotted his fighters auto pilot and ignited his thruster.
Suddenly his mind cleared and he could see the limp craft connected to gravidic mines.. One remsined and appeared to want to attach to the Snoopy. Polarizing his full, Chuck aimed head first for the attached mine, shortening its distance to arm.
He then fired on the lightly shielded device rendering it ecploded.
Scanning the three sabre craft, all three were still alive but still attached to the armed mine. Chuck remembered his training andknew a method for reversing a magnetic field by supplying a sufficient reverse field to free himself. Doing this he then radioed his team to follow suit. Once free the quartet blasted out of the mine field dropping delayed detonators to explode the field.

USS Ark Royal
Jack sat in the Command Chair on the Bridge as he watched the view before him on the viewscreen. Having had the confirmation from General Hurd, he knew that the Marines and Medical teams were now planetside and trying to make their way to the Outpost.
It was now that the waiting had begun. Whilst the combined team of Ops and Engineering officers were waiting on the Shuttle for the go signal, Jack made sure that the Ark Royal was ready to go incase of an emergency or to take a defensive position within the fleet. Whilst he was glad to be on a Starship once more, there were days when sitting in the big chair and agonising quietly about what would happen next were all he could do.
He knew there were good people both planetside and on board, but that still meant that everyone would do their best to get back in one piece and that's what he wanted most. He sat back for a moment in the chair as he tried to relax for a little while.
Hours Later
It took time, more than they had wanted, but the Marines were able to secure the facility while the ships in orbit were able to secure the sky and space. The few remaining Remans were able to fall back across the Neutral Zone and into Romulan Star Empire space.
Engineering and Medical Teams worked hard to restore power and treat wounded. Finally, ships from Starbase 23 arrived to take over for Starbase 400's personnel. The wounded and injured aboard the USS Mercy would be transported to Starbase 400 for recovery while the Marines and Engineering teams returned to the Saratoga, Kearsarge, and Ark Royal before the four ships returned to Starbase 400.
