Mission:
Episode 98 - A Raid on Peace
Location: Sickbay
Timeline: MD3, 0845 hours
"You are absolutely perfect," Doctor Corrigan decided as she scanned the vital signs of the youngest patient in the department. Just three days old, so tiny even within the small crib, the baby girl slept peacefully. Completely oblivious to the fate which had befallen her parents.
The concerns they had surrounding her early and traumatic delivery had not come to pass, instead she was the picture of health. Although right now she was destined to remain here, at least for the time being. What would happen next was another headache entirely.
"I'll check in on her again in a few hours, and see if Chloe has been able to find any other family," Carolyn said as she updated the medical chart, mindful of the empty space where the baby's name would normally go. For now it was Jane Doe. She definately did not seem like a Jane. But that was another problem for later.
Turning her attention to other matters she headed back to the main sickbay, knowing today was due to be busy with follow ups for the many injured who had been discharged after the Mercy got back. Ordering a hot chocolate from the replicator she glanced over her shoulder as the doors opened.
Freya walked into Sickbay, she was due back for a check up. She winced as she pulled herself up onto a biobed as her side was still feeling sore even though her wound was mostly healed.
Carolyn came to stand at Freya's bedside, "didn't you get the memo about not getting injured?" she asked lightly.
Freya offered a smile, wincing a little as she made herself comfortable. “I did and I’m going to end up getting a roasting for this one from General Hurd.” She shrugged her shoulders. “I packed my wound so I could keep going as long as possible.”
"While I compliment you for thinking on your feet, I'm sure you know how dangerous that was," Carolyn commented as she reviewed her medical notes and scanned the site of the injury. "On a positive note, the wound is healing perfectly. With some more rest, you will be as good as new. You were incredibly lucky."
“Yeah I know.” Freya nodded. “The person I went to help was the one who stabbed me! It was only when I checked his wounds that I realised they were self inflicted. Before I knew it he was thrusting a knife in me!” She shook her head. “It wasn’t his fault, I think the Remans got to him.”
"Yeah, they got to a lot of people," Carolyn said softly. Pressing a hypospray to Freya's neck she addd, "this will help with the pain and help with healing. Do not even think of going back to your duties until someone here signs off on it first, okay? And I want you back here in two days."
“Agreed” Freya nodded. “Carolyn there was a pregnant woman amongst those in the cave wasn’t there? Is she doing okay?”
"All of the civilians hiding in the cave got back safe, the marines did an amazing job." Carolyn assured her. "I wish I could say the same for everyone. First person I was treating was eight months pregnant, give or take. Not that it stopped the Remans."
“She’s dead!” Freya shook her head.
"Her baby survived," Carolyn said simply, "though I honestly don't know if I made the right call on that one. Her parents didn't survive. One of the students is trying to track down any extended family but so far, nothing. She doesn't even have a name yet. They want me to pick one but I just think of names that don't suit her. Unless you'd like the job of official baby namer?"
“The baby....survived.” Freya’s heart leapt. “Can I....” She paused. “May I see her?”
"Still hoping that Kaden may change his mind?" Carolyn asked softly, not needing to be an empath or telephath to understand the look on Freya's face.
“Is it that obvious?” Freya smiled warmly. ‘I’ve been wanting a baby for a long time. The only reason we haven’t had one is because Kaden is afraid that a baby of his would have his condition.” She looked at Carolyn. “I want to help with the baby.”
Carolyn hesitated. Not entirely sure it was the best of ideas. But she was full of bad ideas lately. "As long as you know it is helping, nothing more..." she cautioned. "I'll make you a deal. Be a good patient, rest and tomorrow if you are still feeling up to it, I will let you visit her. I am sure the nurses wont mind getting some help especially from a medic. Agreed?"
“Sounds wonderful” Freya nodded enthusiastically.“How is Doctor Hades doing?”
“Doing better than we thought,” Carolyn assured her. “I will let him know you were asking for him.”
“Thank you” Freya smiled and nodded. “I guess I should be speaking with Kaden about me helping out with the baby, I hope he won’t mind.”
“I’m sure he won’t,” Carolyn said with a reassuring smile, looking thoughtful. “Hope... I like that. A lot. Now go, rest up and I’ll see you tomorrow.”
