As the party begins to wind down, Deela stood in front of the huge fireplace. A tray of champagne was passed around to all of the guests.
Deela tapped her glass to get everyone's attention. Once she did, she began her speech...
"Everyone? My I have your undivided attention? I first of all want to thank all of you for coming. After this last mission, I felt that we needed something to take our minds off of it. Many of our friends lives were lost in the line of duty.
So, in memory of those that passed, let us lift our glasses high, and drink a silent toast of kind thoughts and appreciation. As we prepare to go on to a new year, a year of challenges yet to be known, of new joys and new sorrows, let us not forget the past."
Deela lifted her glass up as the room became silent and then took a few sips of her drink.
Lee raised his glass:"To the past, present and the future."
"To the friends we lost may they know that we honor their ultimate sacrifice for the Federation and Starfleet", said Andy as he finished his toast
Saith took a sip of her drink, thinking about the men and women they had lost. The ones she hadn't felt anything about, her cheeks flushed.
Coleman took a sip of his drink. He looked into the drink for a minute and thought of all that happened on Starbase 400 since he came on as a diplomat before switching to the Sciences and finally, to Engineering.
Mike and Janice both raised their glasses. Janice then took a sip of her non-alcoholic drink while Mike closed his eyes for a moment. He said a Vulcan prayer to himself before opening his eyes again and taking a sip.
K'Temoc also raised his glass, "To the honored dead."
Andrew took a slow sip from his drink in memory of all the friends he had lost over the years. He never added anything to the toasts. He didn't trust his voice to remain steady.
Vid-Lotilija was still standing quite stiff and lonely despite all the people around her. She grabbed a glass from the table and saluted in silence. The words touched her in some deep primal way. Suddenly she missed her family, her parents, grandparents, brother and sister.
"ATTENTION... PRESENT ARMS!!!!", said Andy as he snapped at attention.
"To end this party on a positive note, I would like to recognize three people who have just been promoted. They are Captain Clifford, Commander R'nard and Lt. Colonel Hurd. Also I'd like to recognize Lt. Cmdr. Brislan, our new Chief Medical Doctor. Lt. Cmdr. King will be missed as she moves onto bigger things. Congratulations all of you. Salute`!"
Lee clapped:"Congratulations to all of you."
Yamaguchi had no idea of who the Admiral was referring to since she had not meant anyone in this room save Admiral Bremer but she joined in the clapping and cheering all the same, always good to know who one was cheering for.
Saith clapped politely at the announcements. She caught R'nard's eye and nodded, hoisting her drink up in salute. She did the same for the others.
Coleman looked over at all those had got the promotions and clapped gently as he smiled, knowing how hard they had worked.
Janice smiled at the newly promoted Officers while Mike clapped.
K'Temoc clapped, then spoke up, "Next round of drinks is on them!"
Andrew was grateful for the change of mood and joined in clapping and congratulating the others.
Vid-Lotilija clapped, though not knowing the people. 'I should mingle a bit. Not knowing those people are my fault, too.' She sighed, but did nothing, except replacing empty glass.
"My husband has a surprise for all of us. If all of you would gather on the balcony, we'll begin." As they gathered together, Vincent picked up Brandon so he could see as well.
When they had all arrived at the party the balcony had looked out onto a green meadow. Now, much later, the scene was dark, as if at night. Everyone gathered on the balcony, and as if by magic the moon came out from behind a cloud lighting up the scene in front of them. What once was a green meadow was now a snow covered landscape from the same period lit by the light of the moon. In the distance was a small hamlet with lamps burning. As they stood and watched, church bells begin to ring. As they continued to watch, the sound of the villagers singing drifted across the snow towards them. All of the sudden, it began to snow. The kids that were there could be heard oohing and awing.
Racheal looked up as snowflakes began to land on her face, she smiled "I've never felt snow before." the twelve year old commented, clearly it was a novelty for her.
Andrew was standing beside beside the child as she spoke. He looked at her. "It is beautiful, isn't it. If you can ever get to Earth, go to Germany at New Year. It is just like this in the Black Forest". He looked over at Deela and Vincent and smiled, "Vincent, you have out done yourself.", he raised his glass to in salute. He then turned to look at all the faces watching the snow fall.
Torilla moved to join her daughter as she looked out across the now snow dappled meadow. "It looks lovely..." she commented.
"Tell me about it.... y'know Mom, you could be a little more cheerful... this IS a party after all" the child sighed dramatically as she looked disgruntled at her mother.
While everyone else watched the snow falling, Saith took the opportunity to move to the exit. It slid open at her request and she moved into the corridor. Turning she headed for home, but she walked slowly.
Andrew watched the exit close behind her and was half tempted to call her back, but decided not to. It was her choice to leave, but it was a shame she did not stay to share the experience with everyone. He turned back towards the falling snow and remembered his childhood and the one time he visited Germany in winter.
David stood there, watching the snow falling around him,. As he stood there, a smile spread across his face, he drew his sword, and held it skyward. He said, in a quite voice to the men he had lost, ''Fair winds and travel well my friends''. He remained standing as he was in a final salute to his fallen men.
Torilla looked at the Marine Lt Colonel who she did not know. "For our brothers and sisters..." she commented quietly as she came to attention and snapped off a perfect salute.
Holly without even thinking heard the words and saw the sword and went immediately to attention. The marine in her responding to the marines' way of saying good by till next fight to fallen comrades. She held herself there towards the back of the crowd for a good long while before coming back down out of attention and falling to find her way out of the holodeck.
Racheal Yamaguchi looked over at her mother who was standing at attention, right arm raised with her hand almost pointing to her head, clearly she was saluting as she noticed a massive male officer who'm she didn't know, she also noticed that he was holding a rather beautifull looking sword in his hands.
She also noticed an officer who looked clearly like she wanted to be anywhere but here so she made her way over. "Ma'am, can I help?"
Meanwhile Torilla slowly lowered her arm as she stepped over to stand beside the man she relized was a Lt Colonel so he outranked her. "A touching tribute Colonel. You honor your men..... and mine." she said softly, her accent was almost musical. "I'm Lt Commander Torilla Yamaguchi.. The new Stratigic Operations Officer.."
Turning, Lt. Col. Hurd extended his hand, and said, ''Its a pleasure to meet you, Commander, I am Lt. Col. Hurd, 1st Marine Division commanding officer, and Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. Saratoga. Shifting his weight around and again running his hand over his uniform to make sure that his ribbon's, medal's, and other items were properly placed, he said, ''Commander, there is a matter I wish to discuss with you, if you have the time."
