Mission: Episode 100 - A Hatred of Atonement
Location: Sickbay - Emergency Room
Timeline: MD03 0500 - 0830 hrs

Freya was barely aware of what was going on, she was slipping in and out of consciousness as she was rushed into the emergency room. Her clothing and hands were covered in her own blood where she'd attempted to stem the blood flow from the wounds that Andy had inflicted on her. Her arms were pretty torn up too where she’d used them to protect her stomach and the growing baby inside. The medical team had taken over the effort of trying to keep her from bleeding out but as fast as her heart pumped it the blood kept flowing from her wounds.

As she lost consciousness her mind deposited her in what some might consider to be the limbo between life and death. She was standing in a room watching the drama unfold almost like it was a dramatic scene in a movie. The strange thing was she felt as though she wasn't alone.

"Blood pressure still falling, Doctor," Nurse Ashley warned as the nurses assisted Dr Mendez. While reknowned for his larger than life ego, his volatile temper and his lack of patience for anyone and anything, his skills within a surgical suite were practically unrivalled. Even here, bereft of the usual equipment and aids on hand during a normal surgical procedure, his work was methodical, quick and assured.

Acknowledging the order with one curt nod, the surgeon continued to work. Tackling the major bleeds first, prioritising those which posed the most immediate threat to life. The issue, however, was the number of them.

"Find me that other bleed, Cadet," he snapped, patience running thing as he repaired a torn artery, beginning work on the next. "Before our patient has no blood left."

Unable to even find words, the flustered cadet stared desperately at the readings, trying to find the one major bleed that seemed to be eluding them. His blue skin flushed a deeper shade of blue as the seconds ticked by.

"Cadet -" Mendez all but growled.

"I - "

"Step aside and let someone who can read take over," Mendez snapped. He wasted no time checking if the cadet left or not, "someone tell me where I'm going next."

"To a special place in hell, Mendez," Doctor Corrigan commented drily as she appeared beside the biobed, passing off the crutches she had been ordered to use before passing her hands through the sterilisation field before taking the cadet's place. She glanced at the scans as Ashley held up a padd for her to study.

"You should not be here, back away," Mendez warned, continuing his work.

“And you can confine me to a bed later but I can do at least this. I am not having her bleed out or risk her pregnancy more than it already is,” Carolyn snapped back, leaning into the edge of the bio bed for support and balance. She did not miss the look on Mendez’s face.

"And this is being brought up now?" he roared, his anger not directed at any one person, which was rare. "I need details. How far along?"

“A few weeks, it’s in her file.”

"Alright, get Dr Kelley in here yesterday," Mendez barked as he continued to work. "Keep focused, people. We need to get her blood pressure up now and get her stabilised."

"Thankfully for Freya, you are a better doctor than human being," Carolyn told him, her hand exploring one of the knife wounds, by touch searching for what the scans were telling them was another major bleed. Her eyes were on Mendez, daring him to try and order her away.

"Found it..." she said quickly, using her fingers to clamp down over the source of the bleed, hearing the monitor sounds change to registered the slight improvement in blood pressure. "Ashley, I need you to clamp on either side so Mendez can repair it."

"Of course, Doctor," the nurse nodded, already in motion.

As soon as the clamps were in place, Carolyn withdrew her hand, slipping away from the crowd around the table to clean up. Once her hands were clean and sterilised, she moved to join Liam where he had waited. He made no move to lead them out of Sickbay, instead helping her to sit on the edge of an empty biobed. Understanding they would be staying as long as they needed to.

Freya's readings were starting to improve but in the grand scheme of things her life and that of her baby was still hanging by the smallest of threads.

Ariana had wrangled her way out of bed once she'd heard about a medical emergency being brought in. Something, call it a feeling, told her it was to do with Freya. She could see a gathering near the emergency suite and saw Carolyn sitting on a biobed by Liam. She silently walked across to Carolyn staying out of the way of those who were working, she could see a pile of blood stained clothing strewn on the floor. "How is she?"

“She’s hanging in there,” Carolyn assured her, watching everything with a critical eye. “Bleeding is now under control so he’ll take her to surgery once Dr Kelly has given a consult.”

"The baby?" Ariana looked across at Freya then back at Carolyn. "She'll be devastated if she loses her baby. I don't think she'd come back from that, not after everything else that's happened to her." Her attention turned to Kaden who was also being treated for injuries.

Carolyn said nothing in response. Around both patients, the doctors and nurses worked in unison as more of the medical staff, specialists in their respective fields, were brought in to consult and assist. At the centre of it all, Dr Mendez was a focal point, keeping efforts on point and appearing remarkably calm now his earlier outburst was out of the way.

"You are getting slow in your old age," Mendez commented to Dr Sarenk, eliciting a raised eyebrow from the Vulcan medical officer who was tending to Kaden's wounds. Appearing as irritated as a Vulcan could look as his efforts were hindered by his patient's refusal to stay still as he lapsed in and out of consciousness.

"Kaden, can you hear me?" Ariana walked over to Kaden gently taking the hand that was desperately still reaching for his wife. "She can't hear you at the moment Kaden, just trust in the medical team they'll do everything they can for Frey and the baby. In the meantime I'm staying right here with you." Ariana nodded to the medics that she'd keep Kaden busy while they treated his wounds as well. She nodded politely as one of the nurses brought her a chair, she had to admit she wasn't feeling the best herself but then she had dragged herself out of the biobed where she was supposed to be resting.

"I...I don't want...to live...without her..." Kaden managed to say before passing out blood running from his wounds down onto the floor.

~ Timewarp! 0830 hrs ~

Ariana had waited around whilst both Freya and Kaden had gone through their surgeries, once returned she'd sat between the two of them falling asleep in the chair due to sheer exhaustion, both from her own experience with Andy and now the life threatening situation of her friends. Opening her eyes she looked up to see Carolyn.

"Sorry," Carolyn whispered, not wanting to wake anyone. "Go back to sleep, please."

"What, you're not telling me to get back to my own bed?" Ariana smiled at Carolyn. "Are you going soft on me Carolyn?" She offered a tired smile. "How are they all doing?"

"Just being quiet since I'm not supposed to be in here. As for how they are doing, if they rest and listen to doctors orders, they should make a full recovery. It will just take some patience," she assured Ariana.

Ariana breathed a sigh of relief. "That's good to know, thank you." She looked at her two friends who were both still sleeping before slowly getting up. "I had to be here until I knew they'd be alright. Fancy keeping me company on the way back to my biobed?"

"Since you aren't up for a race, I think that'll be okay," Carolyn smiled, holding up one of the crutches she had been given. "Mendez chewed me out earlier for not using them and revoked my early release for good behaviour. But I will have my revenge."

Grimacing slightly she began moving away from the two marines, Ariana easily keeping pace. In fairness, a tortoise would have done better.

“I don’t know about me going back to bed I think you should go back to bed.” Ariana smiled at her friend. “Carolyn would you consider being one of my baby’s godparents? I know it’s not normally something observed by Betazoids but Cameron is Human and I’m half Human. I just want to know that if anything ever happens to me that my baby will have that extra help from someone who cares. I was thinking of asking Vox too."

Carolyn stopped, genuinely shocked. “I.... I don’t know what to say. I don’t know that I’m godparent material but I guess if Vox is there to be responsible then okay.”

Ariana grinned. "In that case I'll speak to Cameron about it when I see him and
arrange it." As they reached her biobed she gently sat back on ready to get some rest. "Freya will be okay won't she? There won't be any lasting damage?"

“I promise, she will be,” Carolyn assured her. “Get some sleep.”

Ariana nodded. "I'll sleep better now Andy is out of the way!" She smiled and lay down to get some sleep.
