Episode 98 - A Raid on Peace

Michael and Splendora sat in the front with Lynn. The Chief of security was called as it was a senior officer's wife that was injured. They waited. Lynn seemed withdrawn. She felt Carolyn glaring at her.
Keeping as much distance as she could between herself and the nurse, Doctor Corrigan stood with her arms folded across her chest. Her eyes seemed a darker, more piercing shade of blue as she stared at Nurse Lynn. Bad enough her negligence had almost killed her but this... this was unforgivable.
She glanced down at her backpack, then at her watch. She was going to be cutting it fine but that didn't matter. As with any event like this, the aftermath always involved a lot of questions and a lot of reports. Every so often she glanced down at the PADD in her hand, giving her a live feed with a breakdown of Kalani's condition.
Splendora approached Carolyn..."Are you alright?"
"It isn't me I'm worried about," Carolyn told her. "It's Kalani. And Hades. Everything they are dealing with, will have to deal with because she -"
She stopped, taking a deep breath. "I should have just let Hades be and let her take her chances."
Splendora placed a gentle hand on her shoulder. "You could never do that. Not for Lynn but for Hades. You care about him."
Carolyn glanced at the hand on her shoulder, raising an eyebrow. "Rol has me all psyched out for today, Doctor," she said quietly, stepping aside so she broke the contact. When she next spoke she went back to glaring at Lynn. "And of course I do, he's my friend. So is Kalani."
"Trust me I am not trying to...psych you out." She sighed. "How is Kalani?"
"Internal bleeding and the majority of her injuries were taken care of during surgery but there is still swelling in her brain. She is in a coma to help reduce the swelling and baring any complications, like say, an insane nurse with a pipe, she will make a full recovery. The next few hours are critical, a higher chance of a complication occurring."
"Can't we just take her to the Brig? I am not stopping Hades a second time," Carolyn asked.
Splendora sighed, "The Chief of Security is here to take a statement."
"Suppose it's a better option for you than the airlock," Carolyn told Lynn. "What were you thinking?!"
Lynn looked up at her. "Well I thought she was stealing from the doctor....and then she started lying and saying she was his wife." She huffed. "Besides I used a J-tube pipe they are not hard. She is the one who fell into the open J tube. She hurt herself as far as I was concerned." She turned her head away.
Splendora understood Carolyn's rage. She was starting to feel it too.
"She hurt herself?!" Carolyn shouted at her, her hands balled into fists as she moved towards the woman. "You couldn't see past the colour of her skin! You attacked an innocent woman! And you still don't see you did something wrong?"
Splendora took Carolyn's role and stepped between the two. "Let's not do anything hasty..."
"He was not supposed to marry her!" Lynn shouted. Her eyes were averted and thus nobody noticed their red glow.
That was the moment Peter walked into the room, he had watched the goings on through a monitor and read the reports by the responding officers.
He pierced the room with a loud sharp whistle. "Ok Everyone shut up. One at a time or I'll brig all of you and sort it out later. Now, we have a person in sickbay with very serious injuries, that could result in attempted murder charges. I would like some answeres please."
Nivar stepped forward. "That," he pointed at Lynn, "Is the person who started it all."
Lynn huffed. "I did not!"
"I arrived in sickbay and Nurse Lynn informed me that she had seen someone - who we later discovered was Lieutenant Kalani - who she believed was stealing from Doctor Hades' quarters. She advised me that said person was in our decon section, behind a forcefield and that she had struck her with a pipe," Carolyn told him, summarising her initial conversation with the nurse. "She had asked me if security was on the way. At no time did she mention the severity of the injuries caused as a direct result of her actions."
Lynn sighed, "Well how should I know. I just transported her out of the tube and into the force field. She was alive and kicking when that happened." Lynn rolled her eyes.
"You almost killed her! You killed her baby!" Carolyn screamed at her pushing past Splendora.
Michael grabbed her around the waist and pulled her close to him. "Easy..." He looked at the Chief Security Officer. "This young lady has a shuttle to catch can you please take a witness statement....I do have a recording of the incident that might help." He held out his hand to the CSO while still holding Carolyn back. "Michael Nivar, Section 31 temporarily assigned to the station."
"Let go of me," Carolyn hissed through her teeth, giving up trying to move his hand. "I'm fine."
At this point Peter was getting, annoyed, his temper wasn't the best thing, Maria said if he got his guinea up too much, he would probably slug an admiral if he felt it would help, and having to tamp it down as a slave, didn't help, and now he found out that a member of Starfleet's answer to the Tal Shiar or Obsidian order on board.
Calming breaths calming breaths, "Ok.....let's get a statement but for the record, anyone yelling, lashing out or starting anything, any one of you will end up spending the night in the brig and I don't care if you have a personal summons from the President of the Federation himself. As for video images, yes send them. So let's get statements."
Nivar let Carolyn go. He watched Peter lead her to an empty office. While he did that Nivar headed out to get the images sent properly and to review them before sending to the colony elders. He gave a nod at T'Mira and Splendora and was back within ten minutes. the CSO was still taking Carolyn's statement.
The second Nivar let go, Carolyn had moved to the other side of the room. Scooping up her bag, she refused to even look in Lynn’s direction. Instead she had shown Garibaldi to an empty office and the pair sat down on opposite sides. While he took the statement she recounted what had happened with perfect recall, stopping at the point Harris had taken Kalani into surgery.
“... Lynn has been a difficult member of staff at times,” Carolyn concludes. “But up until five days ago, it was limited to too much idle gossip and rumours. Mostly concerning Dr Hades. Is there anything else you need from me?”
"No that's all I need right now. I may have more questions later on, please make sure I can contact you."
As Carolyn left the room Lynn was brought in. She sat down staring at the desk. She would be asked yet again to recount things. She was tired and angry.
It started as all interviews do, with their article 32 rights, to inform her she had a right to remain silent and a right to have an advocate.
Peter looked at her, "Start at the beginning and tell me in your own words what happened."
She sighed, "I was delivering medication to one of the Admiral who is here for the conference. He's leaving soon. I finished and was walking back. I noticed that woman," she said referring to Kalani. "She was coming out of doctor Hades' quarters with a box. She looked around and look suspicious. I was too far to get to her and she got in a lift and was gone. I called your department and they said they'd come right away. She came back. I watched her go in again and she once more and she was carrying stuff I know doctor Hades loved. I waited and no security. So finally I jumped out grabbed the black rubber coil pipe that the Engineering team had left and I told her to drop the things she was carrying. She proceeded to spew lies..."
Peter made notes, recording the information, he would check with the responding officers see what delayed them. "Ok, then what happened as regards to the assault?"
"Well she told me she was doctor Hades' wife. I didn't believe her. I took one of those soft rubber pipes and held her at bay. I warned her not to move but she stepped towards me I swung and hit her. It was rubber for God's sake and she stepped back. I told her to stay still she stepped back again and fell into the Jeffrey tube. She only went down two decks I transported her here for safe keeping until you got here!"
Hades had chosen that time to enter. He looked at the CSO. "She is my wife! I want that!" he pointed to Lynn. "Out of my sickbay and arrested. I will press charges." He leveled his gaze at Lynn. "Take this trash from my sickbay our I will transporter her in a bio bubble off the station! Then you can take a shuttle to get her back."
Peter glared at him, "Do not tell me how to do my job. But if you are pressing charges... I want a full and complete medical report on the injuries sustained so we can determine a full list of charges.
He gritted his teeth. "Fine. I'll get Doctor Harries to once Kalani is out of surgery."
Peter then unbent, knowing if this was Maria he would be just as mean and probably have shot someone, "Doc, I hope she gets better."
Hades gave a nod, the fight leaving him. "Thanks."
Then he turned to an officer regarding Lynn, "cuff her, read her, her article 32 rights, charges are aggravated assault, conduct unbecoming, pending further information."
As the officer cuffed her Lynn huffed. "I was just trying to stop what I thought was a thief! I told her not to move!"
