Episode 98 - A Raid on Peace

Timeline: MD 04 1800 hours

Lynn huffed and she paced the small confines of sickbay. Where the hell was security! She smiled. She was a hero! They would raise statues to her. She paced again hearing the door open she jumped and turned only to find Doctor Corrigan there. "Doctor! Did you see security on the way here?" Lynn said. The words were hers yet her mind was still cloudy. It was as if she was a puppet for someone...or something.
Entering sickbay with a back pack slung over her shoulder, out of uniform, Carolyn hesitated in mid stride. She noted the flush of colour in the other woman's cheeks, as if she was excited or had just been at the gym. And even as she spoke, the nurse had resumed her pacing right in front of Hades office. "No... Lynn, what is going on, why would security be...? Has something happened?"
"Yes! I caught a thief! I saved our bosses life. He could have been killed if it wasn't for me. I knew the moment I laid eyes on...." She had stopped pacing and then paced again. "That....that thief!" She looked at Carolyn. "Red handed, caught with Hades' stuff!"
"Lynn!" Carolyn snapped, trying to make the woman stop and focus. "Breathe and explain. Who are you talking about?"
She smiled, "I was walking by on the senior quarters deck. I just took Admiral Hopkins his last dose of Topram for his Tarkelian Flu as per Doctor Hades orders since the admiral is leaving. Doctor Hades had to see Mrs. Edington, poor old dear she can barley get out of bed."
"I don't need a medical history Lynn..."
"Alright I'm getting there. Anyway I saw Doctor Hades' quarters open and the thief came out with a box. She went in the turbo lift and then came back. On the third time I knew I had to get her. She was cleaning him out! She was even taking his clothing! I grabbed a J tube pipe and I knocked her good. She's in a medical force field in the decon room. She's still out cold! Now I just heave to wait for security to take her."
Carolyn listened, her eyes going wide as the nurse continued with her story. "You hit someone with a pipe?! Are you insane?!" She picked up a medical kit, hurrying towards the decon room. "Call Hades and get him down here, now."
"Of course I will! That ....." Watching Carolyn hurry away Lynn shrugged. She headed to the coms panel. She'd check on security too.
Without waiting to hear if she spoke to Hades or not, she used her access code to deactivate the field and gain access to the decontamination room. Stepping inside hurried towards the unconscious Orion woman, "Kalani? Can you hear me? It's Carolyn..."
Kalani lay still on the ground. Orange Orion blood flowed from an open wound on her head. Her leg lay at an odd angle and her breathing was quickly slowing. Nurse Carey walked in and gasped. "Oh my! What happened?" She slid down grabbing a tricorder.
"Lynn has gone insane is what happened," Carolyn all but growled. As the tricorder in her hand began to display the readings, she realised the injuries were far worse than even a single hit would cause.
"Oh no...skull fracture, broken ribs....broken leg...." The woman gasped at the next reading.
"Go get me a stretcher, now," Carolyn ordered as she tended to the head wound first. "And have someone put Lynn in my office, and keep her there. Kalani, stay with me okay. Hades is coming and we are going to get you fixed up. Just keep fighting, okay and I'll buy you all the chocolate you want."
Harris, who was on duty, entered at that moment. He gasped. "Holy hell!" He ran to get a gravity stretcher. He knelt by Carolyn. "Hades will have a fit....I need to set her leg bone before we move her....is she out cold?"
"Yes, but I don't know how long for, so be quick," she told him firmly. "Very quick."
He took hold of her leg and pulled. Within a minute the bone was set. Supporting her head they transferred her to the gravity stretcher. "We need to get her into the OR....Hades is going to go mad when he hears....Can you take care of that and I'll take care of Kalani."
"Harris so help me, you owe me," Carolyn told her fellow doctor. She'd much rather be in surgery and have to wait for another shuttle than get between Hades and Lynn. "Go, now, before I change my mind."
She walked with him as far as the main bay, bracing herself for the oncoming storm that was about to hit.
The door opened just as they wheeled in Kalani but it wasn't Hades. It was Michael Nivar. He took in Kalani's state and then looked at Carolyn. Before he could form words there was a hum in the room.
Hades had been on his way back to sickbay when Lynn had called. She'd told him that she caught a thief coming out of his quarters and that the thief was in sickbay. A cold sweat broke out on his forehead. Kalani had been moving his stuff into their new quarters that they would occupy after the wedding. He was going to drop off his med kit and head to help her. He broke into a run and then cursed. If Bremer wanted to throw him in the brig for improper use of a transporter so be it. He called for an emergency transporter to sickbay.
The hum of the transporter filled the room and Hades materialized. He looked around wildly noted the orange blood on the floor but Kalani was nowhere to be seen. "What the hell happened!" He barked.
Nivar, the section agent seemed to step behind Carolyn. His courage failing him. Someone was about to get airlocked and he'd rather it not be him.
"Coward," Carolyn muttered under her breath as she held her ground. Speaking up she knew he wouldn't care for words of concern or anything. "Lynn apparently found Kalani taking things from your quarters and she..." words failed her as she tried to tell him. "She's lost a fair amount of blood, some broken bones and internal bleeding. Harris took her into surgery just to be safe." Not to mention make sure he was well out of the way.
Hades eyes narrowed. His mind was spinning. "If she caught her....how." His face suddenly lit red. There was a sound that sounded suspiciously like an EEP behind her. "How did she get broken bones! What the hell happened." He looked around as the medical staff had began to gather.
Nivar slipped out to call T'Mira. If anyone could calm him it was his half sister. He also called Splendora.
"In here," Carolyn said, tone brokering no argument as she took hold of his arm and steered him into his office. He did not need an audience, not right now.
Nivar followed close behind. He figured he'd be needed soon. There was no way Carolyn could hold back Hades. He sighed.
The nurse who'd put Lynn in Carolyn's office came in. "I found out what happened!"
Hades turned and roared, "Well someone better tell me! My wife is in the OR. What the hell happened!"
Nurse Carey straightened. So she had been right. Kalani was married to Hades. She'd caught the young woman in sickbay the last couple days leaving flowers and note son his desk. She'd actually picked one up, the nosy part of her, and had seen the words To my Love She had been happy She liked Kalani.
Carey looked at Carolyn and sighed, "Lynn saw her coming out of your quarters and hit her.....with a pipe but...when Kalani stumbled she fell down an open Jeffery tube...Lynn transported her out using the medic...."
"LYNN! THAT BIT..." He stormed over to his desk tearing the drawer open. "Where the hell is my phaser!"
"Hades, no!" Carolyn shouted, slamming the drawer closed and physically squeezing into the gap so she was standing in his way. He was in such a rage she knew it would not go down well but him doing something in the heat of the moment would be even worse. When she spoke next she spoke quickly, because she knew he would not for a second pause but she kept her voice low. "Stop and listen, just for a second? Kalani needs you. She needs you to be here when she comes out of surgery and for every second that comes after. Please, focus on being her husband and not on having revenge."
The words were sinking in but his attention was grabbed by a nurse who ran out covered in orange blood. He side stepped and ran out watching her disappear into the storage area and come out with orange blood. His medical brain kicked in. "What....what's that for?"
"We need to transfuse."
"Give her the Regilian stimulant for blood production! For god's sake what idiot is in the OR?" He was heading towards the suits when Nurse Millars voice floated in. "It's...we can't. Lieutenant Liora is stable but...Doctor Kelley is trying to.."
Hades spun around. Doctor Kelley was a specialist of the highest caliber....an..."Why is she here?"
Miller looked at Carolyn tears in her eyes. "The transporter used when she was injured was a standard beam not calibrated for...." She turned to Hades. "For pregnancy. We're trying to save the baby." She hurried back into the OR.
Hades stumbled feeling dizzy. His legs gave and Nivar was there catching him. There were tears streaming down his face....his body shook. "LYNN!" He shoved Nivar away stomping towards Carolyn's office.
"Hades, look at me! This is not going to help Kalani!" Carolyn shouted at him, running after him. Almost at her office she moved in front of him, placing both of her hands against his chest to try and slow him down. It was impossible and she could feel his rage and his pain. She took a few steps backwards, hearing her office door open behind her. God, she hoped someone had called Braxton..
Behind her, she heard a cry of surprise from Lynn as she turned to see them. Clearly expecting a far different scene, to be a hero of the tale. How tempting it was to just step back and let Hades do what he wanted. But that wasn't Kalani.
"I know, Hades, I know what it is like to have a baby just ripped away from you. It hurts like someone is tearing out your soul," Carolyn told him, her voice low, urgent, knowing there was only so much space. And she was now almost all that separated the two. "Kalani will need you, and you her. Be with her, Hades. She is your wife, hold her. Cry with her. Help her. But this is not how to do it."
Lynn looked up confused...."Baby? Wife?" She paled. "I...."
Nivar wedged himself between Hades and Carolyn. "Hades! Enough! She's right."
Lynn stepped up. "I didn't know...I...." Some of the confusion lifted and then it was pack. Nobody noticed her eyes turn red quickly before going back to their sea green.
Just then the door opened and Doctor Harris stepped out of the OR. He removed his surgical had. He noted the crowd. As security arrived he ushered Hades and Carolyn out leaving the rest to deal with it. As the door to Carolyn's office closed Harris sighed. "She's alright. Kalani will be fine. There is some swelling of the brain but we'll keep her in a coma a few days but Hades....we...tried we couldn't ... She was only two weeks into the pregnancy."
Hades stumbled down into the sofa suddenly his vision blurred.
Carolyn moved with him, holding him. "She's going to be okay Hades, focus on that, focus on Kalani," she whispered in his ear. Looking over his head at Harris, she offered him a small smile, "Thank you. Let us know when she is settled in ICU?"
Harris left leaving Carolyn and Hades. Hades turned to her. "This is my fault. I should have told everyone who my wife was..."
"No, this was Lynn's fault," she told him firmly. "She could have called security, she could have spoken to her... anything but what she did."
He turned to Carolyn. "I want her off this station." He took her hand. "I heard what you've said out there. We will talk about that." He noticed her bag. "You're leaving..."
“I can get another transport. I’ll stay as long as you need,” she promised.
"I..." He noticed a paper had fallen from her bag...an envelope. So few people wrote letters but hers was hand written and had his name on it. He swooped it up and before she could stop him he opened it.
“Please don’t read that,” she pleaded, trying to take the paper out of his hands. She would have happily thrown herself out an airlock as he read it. “I didn’t want to go without saying sorry. For before?”
Hades.
Before you stop reading this (or burn it), I just want to say thank you...
For saving my life, for listening and not pushing any of those big red buttons when I've annoyed you too much. I know I’m all kinds of messed up but thank you for trying to be my friend anyway.
And I’m sorry. Of all the people on this station you are one of the very few I would consider a friend. You have been more patient and kind than I deserve. And the only one I trust completely. It was unforgivable to shout at you. I wish so much that we could hit rewind and I could take it back.
I also wish I was half as strong as you. Half as brilliant. How I wish I had your courage...
I need to go home, just for a couple of days. My mother is asking for me and that is so special I cannot even tell you. She hasn't remembered my name since I was eight.
And then I need to go to Vulcan. I don't really understand why but maybe if I do, some things will start to make sense before I drive myself crazy. Please, please understand.
Before you panic, this isn't a goodbye letter. I don't really do goodbyes. I will be back in a few weeks, I promise. Unless you decide you want another assistant. In which case, I wish I had shouted a little louder and hadn't left my first edition book on your desk for safe keeping.
Dr Reid is due any second so I should go. I'm leaving in a few hours and there is so much I have to do. Please remember to try and rest.

ps. Please tell Kalani thank you again for dinner. I am no expert but I think you are perfect for each other.
pps. You need to keep Mendez away from from the med students. Especially Cadet Jayk.
Hades stared at the letter a long time and then took her hand again. She was so much like the sister he lost while at the Academy. Part of the reason he was on her case was that she was too much like her. "I shall always be your friend. It's all so....complicated and I'm used to dealing with complicated alone." He looked at her put his arm around her and kissed the top of her head. "I should apologize to you too. I...felt abandoned. This have been tense and ..." He shrugged. He turned to her. "I'll keep your book safe. Why don't you go catch your shuttle. I'll see you when you get back.”
“I can stay. A day isn’t going to make a difference,” she offered. While he seemed more centred and less likely to murder Lynn, she didn’t want to just leave him.
"You need to see your mother. We will be here when you get back."
“I want updates every day,” she warned him as she pulled out her Sherlock Holmes book from her bag, which made it massively lighter. Turning back she hugged him, “day or night, either of you. If you need anything...”
He hugged her back and accepted the book. "Every day."
The door opened and Nivar slipped in. "You can see Kalani."
He sighed. "Do you want to see her before you go?"
“Absolutely,” Carolyn told him as she stood, offering her hand to help him up, “why don’t we go together?”
He took her hand and stood. They walked out and over to the recovery room. As they entered his eyes locked onto his wife's still form. He walked over to her and it was as if his body finally gave out. He sunk into the chair and for the first time in his life he began to weep. He'd never cried from his soul but now it all came out. He took her hand. "Please don't leave me."
Carolyn stood beside him, torn between staying so he wasn't alone and leaving him to just have the time he needed to let everything he was feeling out. Not entirely sure what she would prefer if the situation was reversed. "She won't," Carolyn assured him, her hand around his shoulders as she gazed down at Kalani.
She caught sight of T'Mira approaching, the woman pausing to speak with Harris and Nivar. "T'Mira is here," she told Hades quietly, leaning in to hug him. Not caring it would probably earn her more disapproval from his half-sister. "I'll let you be with your family. For now, just be with her Hades. The rest you can work through together later."
T'Mira walked in taking in the sight. Her brother had always been the strong one. He'd been strong through everything yet now...seeing him like this. It shocked her. She looked at Carolyn. "I will stay with him. Thank you for your assistance." He looked at Hades placing a hand on his shoulder. "You are Vulcan. Vulcans do not display emotion like this." She wasn't being cold or heartless. She just needed the brother she knew back. She'd noticed changes in him in the last weeks. He was giving in too much to his emotions and she knew he'd want her to remind him of that.
While Hades collected himself T'Mira walked Carolyn to the door. She handed her a PADD. "My brother trusts you. This is Lieutenant Kalani's file. Will she survive?" She was already thinking of the link and if Kalani died what it would do to her brother. She trusted Harris but she needed someone who didn't worship her brother to be honest with her.
Carolyn took the PADD, scanning through it. "Yes," she said, handing it back. "With proper care and supervision, which she will obviously have, I'd expect a full physical recovery. The next eight hours will be critical. I'll stick around to support Harris until the immediate danger has passed."
"I am told you were leaving. It is alright. I am sure the rest of the staff is competent to handle this." She motioned to Isaiah who walked over. He gave a nod to Carolyn. Before he could say anything she motioned to Hades. "He needs sleep. You were always better at the nerve pinch."
Isaiah scrubbed his hand down his face. He loved his wife but sometimes she was...a hand full. "You want me to knock your brother out?"
"He was weeping. Vulcans do not weep."
He sighed, "He loves his wife T'Mira. Of course he was weeping. If anything happened to you..."
"I would expect you to conduct yourself as a Vulcan. My sisters husband lost his wife too and he was perfectly fine. Go and make with the pinch." She walked out leaving Carolyn and Isaiah. He sighed shaking his head. "I am half Vulcan and I say this with love, Never Ever, marry a Vulcan. They can be most illogical."
