1,550 words; about a 8 minute read

Mission: Episode 95 - Helping Old Friends
Location: Sickbay, patient rooms, Starbase 400
Timeline: MD 10 noon

ON:

Rol decided to use his lunch hour to visit his new boss. He'd heard what had happened and he knew that she would need someone to talk to. He was a bit nervous about meeting her but his concern for her wellbeing took precedence. As he walked he played with his earing. He'd noted that not many Bajoran's on the station had theirs on but he felt incomplete without it. His faith was important for him. He found himself outside her room and took a deep breath before entering. He stood at the door as he spoke, "Counselor Monroe?"

Ariana hadn’t long awoken as she looked towards the door, she smiled warmly as she greeted her guest “You must be Lieutenant Rol?” She motioned for him to join her, “I remember seeing your file.”

Rol entered and pulled up a chair close to her bed. "I had hoped we could meet under better circumstances. How are you doing?"

"About as well as can be expected I guess" she offered a smile as best as she could. "Everyone keeps telling me it's not my fault but that's how it feels. Another part of my husband Jonathon is gone, I'm just glad I still have my remaining baby."

Rol gave a nod. "I know how rough it must be. I've never gone through it myself but my sister has and I know the pain she went through." He thought a moment. "You are Betazoid right?"

"Yes I am" she nodded, "my senses are a little foggy at the moment, I think my emotions are getting in the way at present. I've had company here up until now I think Marcus must have gone to rest for a little while."

He nodded, "It's to be expected. Betazoids can sense their children's thoughts and consciousness early on. The Betazoids, like us Bajorans, believe that all things happen for a reason. There are many situations that we do not have control over and this is one of them. You just said that this feels like your fault. Do you mind if we examine the words that you said?" He would prove through logic to her that it was not her fault. Others may tell her that it wasn't but until she could see the reasoning behind it she would blame herself.

"Please do" she nodded, "I knew when I woke up that one of my babies was gone, I could sense the difference."

"That is understandable." He looked around. "I'll be right back." He left and was back within a minute with a pencil and paper. "Alright. You can always count on Hades to have pencils and pens and paper. He's rather antiquated that way." He smiled. He drew a table with two columns. "Now this is the is column as in it is your fault and this is the is not column as it it's not your fault. I'll ask you a series of questions and you'll tell me where I am to put a mark. If at the end of this there are more ticks in the is not section can we safely say this is not your fault?"

Ariana nodded "Fair enough ask your questions."

"Alright. Here we go. When you found out you were pregnant. You followed the doctors advice to the letter and did all you could to make sure you and the babies were healthy. Right?"

"Yes of course" she nodded.

"Great so then it's safe to say that a check should go in the, not your fault, section of the table since you did all to make sure that the babies were fine. Correct?"

"Correct" Ariana nodded and smiled.

"Alright now next question. You knew about the medical condition you had and ignored it and didn't seek help?"

"Not true" she shook her head, "if I'd have known I'd have done something about it sooner."

"Oh! So you didn't know about this condition and if you had known you would have taken all the steps to make sure your babies were safe?"

"I would have done anything to make sure my babies were safe." She looked at Rol

"So again we put a check in the, not your fault, section."

Ariana nodded she could see sense in his line of questioning it was making more sense to her now than it had before.

"Great. One more question. Ready?"

"As I'll ever be" she smiled and nodded.

"Excellent. Were you happy about this pregnancy and did you want your babies and everyday wake up happy that you were pregnant even when you were sad at your husband's passing?"

Ariana nodded, her eyes misted over at the mere thought of what it would have meant to have Jonathon still with her. "Of course I was happy, I still am happy."

"So another check in the not your fault. So three for not your fault and zero for your fault. So what does all this tell you?"

She took a relaxing breath "That its not my fault" she smiled at Rol and wiped her eyes, "thank you Rol"

“There you go,” he said gently taking her hand. “This is in no way your fault. The Bajorans believe that we have no control over what happens. We have no control over when we lose a loved one, we have no control over if someone will walk out on us it is all fate and the rotation of the stars. We cannot control destiny but we learn from it. You have learned of your bottomless strength, you have learned that you can find those that care for you when you feel alone and scared. You have learned a lot, yes?”

Ariana was impressed with Rol he was a good counsellor, "Yes I've learned a lot today."

“So therefore do not spend time worrying or fearing because your emotions can affect your little one. Focus on the remaining child and love it twice as much. Bajorans believe that if a twin passes in the womb then the child left will have a part of the others Pagh and will be twice as smart, strong, and gifted. This child will be your miracle and your gift. Focus on getting well so that you can keep him or her well too. It is not the time for self-blame but for strength and love to overcome.”

Suddenly a motion from behind caught Rol’s attention. He sighed. He could sense the presence there. Hades always had a way about him. Without turning around he said. “Doctor Hades you better not be here to check her out when there is a qualified team of doctors ready to do so. You are on rest time. If you were here to work you do know that I would have to report you to the CO for not listening to the counsellor."

Hades muttered something too low to hear. “I just came to check on her.”

“Absolutely and she’s fine now you will go to your quarters and rest.”

Hades sighed, “Did anyone ever tell you that you are the most annoying person on this station.”

Rol smiled, “All the time. In fact it’s my morning mantra. I wake up and look in the mirror and say, ’Rol today you will be more annoying then yesterday and your annoyingness will be spectacular.’

Hades gave Ariana a look that said is he for real?

“Now then doctor. You will go back to your quarters and rest and I will go check on your cousin and if something is wrong I will bring him here and you will come back as a family member and not a doctor and you will trust your staff to handle things thus showing them you have confidence in their abilities to handle things when you are away or taking rest. Right?”

Hades muttered something again and left.

Rol turned to Ariana with a smile. “I am on a roll.”

"You can tell me what that was all about when I'm declared fit for duty" Ariana smiled, "In the meantime as head of he counselling department I'll back up whatever decisions you make. Plus I want to thank you for helping me to see what I needed to see and hearing what I needed to hear" she smiled. "Right now I'm looking forward to getting out of here."

He smiled at her, "And you will. Now take some time to rest and let your body heal. You are one strong woman Lieutenant Monroe and don't let anyone tell you that you are not. "Don't worry about the department I have a full report ready for you and we can go over it when you are up and running again. Just enjoy the rest time, talk to your little one," he said gently placing a hand on her stomach. "All will be well. You will see." He gave her hand a squeeze. "If you need anything please call me. Alright?"

"I will I promise and thank you Rol" she lay her head back on the biobed, she was looking forward to Marcus returning to see her again.

OFF.
