Mission:
Mission 83 - Recovery
Location: USS Vanguard
Timeline: Few hours after 'Crossing the Border'
ON:
It had been a few hours since the Vanguard entered Romulan space. The ship was just over thirty-eight hours away from the Algorab system.
Lennox had returned to the Marine Briefing Room. Gunnery Sergeants Ermey and Agtx were already there. Before either could said ‘Attention on Deck’, Danny held up a hand, “At ease, at ease.” He flashed a smile, “Gunny, let’s get this away mission planning started, can you send a message to the rest of the Marine Staff and the Romulan...Major T'Lana to assemble.”
Ermey nodded, “Yes sir.” He sent a message to General Jones, Colonel Hurd, Major T’Lyn, Major Sullivan, and Major T'Lana advising them to report to the Briefing Room, he then called for Sgt's Maal and Duvall.
“Sssir, what are my ordersss?” The big Gorn Agtx asked.
“Enforce the peace in here.” Lennox replied. “During the mission, anything the Admiral requires.”
Lennox then walked back over to the wall monitor and activated it while he waited for everyone to arrive.
Phoenix stirred from a rough night, at least for her, given her previous twenty-hour flight in her fighter. While she did take an hour going over topographical maps, most of her downtime was spent playing.
"This... isnot," Phoenix yawned groggily, "em'my 'ay"
The spirited pilot had to push the two engineering beefcakes she was nestled between out of her way so she could dress. Come to think of it... Phoenix could not remember who's quarters she was in and with the dark lighting, she had to blindly palm around the floor for her pants, green duty shirt, and and her flight suit.
"It was fun, Boys," Jillian waved to the two naked men she had just drunkenly bedded, before she slipped into the bathroom to freshen up.
..Some time later, Phoenix entered the briefing room polished, hungover, but smelling much better than before. She was also quick enough to stop the enlisted from saluting.
"Don't do it. I'm just here to kill shit, Boys," Phoenix warned before she sat in the nearest chair and pulled out her plans for extraction.
Lt. Col. Hurd recieved the summons to the Breifing Room, and left his quarters at once. Arriving at his destination, he walked in, and surveyed those already in attendance.
"Colonel, Sir." Lennox said when Hurd entered. "I've requested everyone gather for final mission planning."
T'Lyn arrived in the briefing room and looked around, "What are ur orders sir?" She asked as she looked around wanting to get down to business.
T'Lana also arrived in the Briefing Room. He looked around at the Starfleet Marines already gathered. She didn't say anything, just quietly took a seat at the briefing table.
A moment after the slender Major entered, Master Sergeant Duvall entered
the briefing room, he looked around as he recognized the vast majority of the personnel present.
Time was counting down and Deela was getting worried. This mission depended on the Marines and she hadn't received a plan of action yet.
Phoenix decided it would be her, that began, after all, her part of the mission was not nearly as complicated than the primary objective.
"I'll be handling the exit plan of this mission, for which I'll be taking some of my pilots and covertly steal a couple of shuttles at the closest air strip," Phoenix opened as she laid out a topographical map in front of everyone. "Insertion should primarily be done by using biodampeners to mask non-Romulan people in our group, and my recommendation is that each fire team be assigned one sniper and one stinger. We should also be injected with low-level isotopes so that we can track each others' whereabouts."
Having done recon before, she did not want to push, but making sure they all understood how a special ops unit operated was important. So she pointed to a high-lighted circle on her map.
"That's our DZ. The only smart way to go in, since we do not have any Romulan vessels, at least to my knowledge, is by orbital jumping in and wing suiting while it's dark. If the biodampeners are working, then in theory, we should be able to get to our DZ without any problems and then split up to perform our mission objectives."
Phoenix then shrugged, "But once I get the shuttles we need to get out, the tricky part is signaling my team for LZ pick-ups. That means you'll need to pop different colored smoke cans, if we don't want our communications intercepted."
Lennox spoke up, "Smoke cans can give away our position to anyone watching. Since we're going to be disguised as Romulans, using Romulan equipment, I suggest we hide in plan sight." He paused a moment, then continued, "Major if you can...acquire two Romulan shuttles without raising an alarm, we can simply signal for pick up once the package is in hand. Beam up, and leave orbit. Once shuttle to pick the six of us up...The General, Colonel Hurd, Major T'Lyn, the Gunny, Commander Horman, and myself. The other can be a decoy, and while the Vanguard is picking us up, the decoy can, hopefully, keep any patrols away."
"Looking like Romulans is the easy part Captain," Phoenix countered. "I would not trust communication lines on Romulan territory to be secured on our end, especially if we are not taking Federation encryption gear with us. If they pick us up, we're done. So while colored smoke does get us spotted, it wouldn't be for very long, especially if it's only used for evacuation, unless our resident green bloods have a contingency for the communication lines I don't know about."
T'Lana had kept quiet, listening. The Human pilot was right, she wouldn't trust Romulan comm channels either, but she wouldn't use smoke either, especially on a covert operation. "The moment a patrol spots smoke, the area will be crawling with patrols, on the ground and in the air. Stay off Romulan comm channels. If you want to get out safely, beam out."
"The Vanguard will be cloaked, they can't beam anyone up." Lennox replied.
"I didn't say to the Vanguard. You're pilot will have a shuttle, you simply set an extraction time, find a secured location, and when time is up you're beamed out...job done or not." T'Lana replied.
“We need maximum secrecy on this Op.” Lennox replied, “Having a designated beam out time would keep the team from being spotted and the Romulans from intercepting comm chatter…provided everyone is back to the beam out site on time.”
Keeping silent up to this point, Colonel Hurd asked, ''Does anyone, and want you to be honest, have any reservations about this mission, or the plan as has been set forth so far?''
T'Lana had nothing to say. She wasn't going on the away mission.
Lennox quickly spoke up, "No sir, we have an Intel Operative to pull out. Leave no one behind."
"No sir," T'Lyn stated as she was ready to get this mission over with. She listened to everyone else.
"I've only given my plan to enter and extract the team. Technically, we don't have a plan for your part of the mission, Colonel," Phoenix explained to Hurd. "This would be your point in the conversation to enlighten us of your plan for getting our operative out."
Duvall raised an eyebrow, he had listened this entire meeting and he had little to add to the meeting. "What about Remans planetside?" he inquired. "They see in the dark as well as we do in daylight... and they can also sense us too."
"Not all Remans are telepathic, and they still aren't really trusted by the Romulans after the Shinzon uprising ten years ago." Lennox replied, "Besides we'll be dressed and disguised as Romulans, we should blend in without much notice." Well, at least he hoped. He looked over to Colonel Hurd for his plan of action once they were on the ground.
Duvall turned his head, he in turn also wanted to hear the colonels plan for the extraction but if all else failed, a backup plan could be worked up quickly.
Maal stood there leaning against a wall listening to the briefing.
Andy had been keeping low profile on this one giving Hurd some space to give the orders that needed to be given he nodded to him and then to Sullivan and Lenox and Said "Ok people let's focus on the mission I want everybody ready by the time we arrive to our destination... I'll be going on the away team with you Phoenix..."
Duvall filed away that piece if information and he wanted to protest, a General going on this assignment was dangerous in the extreme and he said as much. "General., my apologies sir but with all due respect... I must protest you're going planetside." he commented, he at least had to show the regulations some respect but the General was a fighter, he had starfighter wings so he knew the score.
"I also object... My objective, while secondary, is also the hardest task. And given your station, it's just really stupid to put brass on the front line where getting into live-fire is a high possibility." Phoenix began running the numbers in her head as she considered the general's offer. She could easily give him the job of shuttle pilot to beam out all team members, while she did the diversion part. But still... as much as she hated this chicken outfit she was in, the part of her that had morals did not like the sinking feeling that he could very well die on her watch.
"Objection noted... But I'm going anyway... Belive me there are certain things of this mission that requires and justifies me being there... I wasn't born with this star on my collar I can handle myself", answered Andy
Lennox wasn’t happy with the General going either, but the objection had been raised, twice, but Jones had made his point and it was clear he was going. Further discussion was pointless.
After the discussion calmed down, the main monitor came to life and Hurd stood up. “All right, listen up. Lennox, Ermey, Duvall, T’Lyn and I will proceed here.” Hurd pointed to an outlying cluster of buildings, “According to Commander Hormas, it’s the communications relay station for the facility. It’s supposed to be lightly guarded, no more than two Sentries at a time. This is his duty station and he should be there, if not we’ll be able to access their database and find his location. The problem is, the relay station is on the opposite side of the facility from the landing pad.” He looked up at Sullivan and Jones.
“Remember this is a covert Op, we’re using Romulan gear, dressed as Romulans, looking like Romulans. We don’t want or need them to know Starfleet has been there, so no firefights.” Again, he looked at Sullivan. “We’ll time our infiltration and limit comm traffic. Phoenix, at beam in plus thirty, fly over the relay station. If we’re ready to beam up, we’ll send a direct data pulse to the shuttle, beam us up then. If you don’t receive the pulse, fly on as usual. If by some chance we have to look elsewhere for the Commander, the Gunney will signal you, beam up, and provide you the new location and time. We want to limit your fly overs to two, to draw as little attention as possible. If all hell breaks loose, we’ll signal you directly. Our communicators will be linked, and we’ll hail you if nessessary.”
Hurd looked around the room. “All right, anyone that hasn’t seen the Doctor, Brislan is waiting to give you a nice Romulan face lift. Once the Bridge informs us we’ve arrived in system we’ll gear up and meet back here. Dismissed.”
Duvall stood, he still was gravly concerned about the General going but weither or not the man could handle himself was irrelevant, it was the position he held which was the bane of contention here, nevertheless the man had said he was going and that was the end of that.
Duvall was not impressed and the look on his face said as much as he walked out the door to see the good doctor.
Gunnery Sergeant Agtx looked around the room, he was the only one present not beaming down. As a Gorn warrior, he wanted to go, but he also realized he'd be spotted within a nanosecond. He waited for the Officers to leave the Briefing Room, then would head to the Transporter Room and stand by there, as ordered.
