Episode 106 – Stalemate
Location: Medbay. Star base 23
Timeline: MD5, 1100 hours
Xalanth let out a slight yawn as he turned the page in his copy of the codex that he was reading to pass the time. He was waiting for his medical checkup and doing his best to keep his mind occupied. He also needed his prescription loaded into the database.
“... keen to do a surgical role, I will send you his file,” Doctor Isla Kane was saying as she emerged from her office. Her round face radiated kindness, the salt and pepper hair and glasses portrayed a wisdom and inspired trust. “I’d be sad to lose him but still. We all need to flourish.”
Following her colleague out into the medical bay, Doctor Corrigan offered her colleague a reassuring smile, “I’ll take good care of him, I promise. Thank you.”
Isla smiled, “not at all. Your staff have been most wonderful helping us as much as we helped you in those early days. It is the least I could do. Oh! A new arrival!”
“Lieutenant Xalanth, yes?” Doctor Corrigan asked as she followed in Doctor Kane’s wake. She had been advised of the newest addition to their crew roster just that morning. Assigned to Starbase 400 as assistant security chief. She had only a little time to scan his file before she had to tend to other duties. “Welcome to the crew. I’m Doctor Corrigan, from the 400. And this is the deputy CMO of Starbase 23, Dr Kane.”
" A pleasure to meet you both. I'm here for my medical exam and I need a prescription added to the replicators." The lizard said as he stood up and slipped his book into his pocket. Giving his species best warm smile he offred his hand.
“Feel free to use the bay, would be a waste to go all the way to the Mercy,” Dr Kane told her colleague before adding, “very nice to meet you, Lieutenant.”
And with that she was gone. “Stuck with me,” Dr Corrigan smiled as she shook the security officer’s outstretched hand. “Do you have your medical records with you? I can download them if not...”
" Yes. " the lizard replied simply as he began to search through his pockets for the data crystal. " Ah ha." he said as he found it and handed it to her. " Complet Starfleet medical record and my prescription to the drug that stops my genetic engineering from working."
“Okay,” she nodded, taking the chip and gesturing to a nearby biobed. “Is there any particular health concerns you have? How is your health normally?”
" None at the moment. My job needs me to be at the top of my field so I make an effort to keep myself as healthy as possible." The lizard said as he lay down on the bed.
“Good to know,” she smiled. Touching a few controls she initiated a full scan. “Hold as still as you can while I download the data. The scan only takes a few minutes and perfectly painless.”
" My first is a federation nurse doctor I know the drill. " The lizard replied with a slight grin on his face.
“First?” Carolyn asked. As a nurse approached, she handed off the chip which the Trill Ensign promised to download to a PADD.
" My first mate T'para. Met her at the academy and been together since. We've had two beautiful daughters." The lizard replied with a warm smile on his face.
Hades had just finished meeting with the CMO on the Star base. He saw Carolyn conducting some sort of medical and he'd been about to ask her if she rested but she'd shot him one of her murderous looks that said don't try it. It was times like this that he wondered if the woman was telepathic. He sighed as he walked up to his daughter-in-law. "Everything going well?"
"Lieutenant Xalanth, meet Doctor Hades. Chief Medical Officer of Starbase 400 and CO of the USS Mercy," Carolyn said by way of introductions. "Dr Hades, Lieutenant Xalanth. The Lieutenant has transferred to the 400 crew, as assistant Chief of Security. Since I was here meeting with Dr Kane, I figured I'd complete his medical here before heading back to the ship."
" Nice to meet you sir." The lizard said still staying still as the scan continued its work.
"Doctors," the nurse interjected, handing Carolyn a PADD now containing the medical files before excusing herself. "Thanks Tia," Carolyn called after her.
The PADD data memorised, she passed the device off to Hades as she turned her attention back to the lieutenant. "I think you are going to give me a lot of reading, Lieutenant," she observed. "I can honestly say I have never had a patient with your unique physiology before."
" Thanks, i get the compliment a lot." Xalanth said from the bed as he knew what she was referring to. "Amazing what some dark collective genetically engineering can do someone. "
She almost choked, unable to look in Hades direction. "Quite," she said after a moment. "Well, your vital signs are well within range for your species. You were not lying when you said you look after yourself."
" Thanks. You need to take care of yourself if you come from my homeworld. Then with two of my mates being free divers, one trained in seven martial arts and having four girls to look after I get plenty of exercises." Xalanth grinned in reply.
Carolyn deactivated the scanner and gestured for him to sit. "So four daughters and two or three mates?" she asked, curious and altogether unsure if his first mate was one of the aforementioned free divers.
" Three mates. T'para, Leilani and Fulvia along with are four girls Yazar, Travla, Lersi and Amrar. " Xalnth said as he sat up. " Dragonians can have six mates in total. "
"Six?!" she repeated. "In that case, you definitely need to keep in shape to keep up with six. Okay... the implant. From your records the long standing recommendation is to observe for any changes. But details are vague other than specifying the position in your spinal column?"
The lizard nodded. " Starfleet medical tried to remove it and all it did was expanded faster than they could cut it out. They did come up with the drug which stops its effect kicking in. "
“Okay. Well, Lieutenant, I just need to run a blood sample and then you will be good to go?” As she worked she glanced up at him as she added the sample to the bedside analyser. “Do you have any questions for us?”
" Just one." Xalanth said letting out a slight grunt as the hypospray got it's sample. " My unwanted addition not grown has it? " He asked with concern in his voice.
"There has been absolutely no change, based on the last medical reports and now," Carolyn assured him.
" That's good. I'll need my prescription for the drug that stops it working loaded into the replicator. " The lizard said his face softening as he did.
“The prescription will be available in an hour,” Carolyn promised, “but any problems you can contact me on the Mercy or visit the Sickbay on your assigned ship. And you, Lieutenant, are cleared for duty.”
" Thank you and i will." The lizard said as he headed for the door.
Watching the new crew member depart, Carolyn glanced at Hades, “if you have time I need to go over a complaint that landed on my desk about Mendez....”
