Mission: Episode 103 - In The Darkest Days...
Location: USS Pegasus
Timeline: MD3 0445hrs

ON:

The Pegasus had departed Starbase 400 a few hours before. Now they were in the heart of the Triangle, cloaked, and looking for enemy ships.

Mike was on the Bridge, sitting in the Captain’s Chair, with his blood boiling. He had one thing on his mind, revenge. Of course he knew he couldn’t defeat the Typhon Pact with one ship, but if they could get behind the lines and cause a stir it might make the Romulans pull a few ships off the front lines. He could also give them a bloody nose in the process.

Janice had died in glorious battle, taking her enemies with her, and while she was Human, she was his wife, his Par'Mach'kai and he wanted the gates to Sto’vo’kor to be open to her. He also knew Janice had been to Mass recently too, and while she didn’t practice her faith as much as she use to lately, he also said a prayer to God that her soul would be welcome into Heaven as well.

Mike himself hadn’t practiced either religion, Klingon or Earth Christian in years. With a Klingon father, he was taught the customs of the Paq’batlh and the Sacred Scrolls of the Kuvam’magh when he was on Qo’noS near the Skral River and Kang’s Summit. He’d prayed to Kahless, knew wanted to go to Sto’vo’kor and feared the Fek’lhr in Gre’thor as a child. However, with a half Human mother that had rejected most of her Vulcan half, he was also raised in the Christian Church in South Carolina on Earth. He’d read the Bible, believed in Jesus Christ, repented of his sins and prayed to God for forgiveness.

Like much of his life, Mike was torn on religion too and had tried to find a balance in the two, as he had in his own Klingon/Human/Vulcan physiology. All he knew was, he hoped Janice was at peace and in a place where she was happy.

His thoughts then drifted back to the Romulans…

“Draven, Roebuck, Gilmore, report to Tactical Astrometerics.” Mike said as he tapped his comm-badge and stood.

A few moments later Mike walked into the large room on Deck Twelve. Like Tactical Operations on Starbase 400 facility featured a large wall mounted display, a few smaller ones to either side and around the room, a main computer terminal, and a conference table to the side for meetings. There were also a few holographic displays and access points.

Once the officers Mike had called arrived, he started. “Lek, do you have any intel on Pact ships in the area?”

“We know they’re using the Triangle as a staging area. Since Starfleet and Klingon patrols were limited in the area because of Pirate activity in his unclaimed region. We believed they wanted to use Peloi as a launching point in an attack against the Klingons, but the target hasn’t been decided on. We also believe they’re working on a listening post on Mendak. It’s not typically used by the Pirate Cartels because it’s so close to SB400 and Federation space, but it was perfect for them to spy us from.” Draven explained.

“Then we go to Mendak first. Ariel, see if you boost the sensor resolution. If we can remain cloaked and get confirmation at distance, then we can warp in to attack before they can get defenses readied. Jon, make sure all departments are ready for battle. Also make sure engineering is ready to repair damage on the move. I’m not planning to return to the station of any starbase for a while.”

“Aye sir.” Roebuck replied.

“Yes sir.” Gilmore replied.

“Mike, what is your plan?” Draven asked.

“We’re going to sting the underside of the elephant. Give them an itch and hopefully make them pause to scratch it.” Mike replied.

Gilmore and Roebuck didn’t quite understand the analogy.

“We’re going to hit them behind the line, maybe they’ll pull ships off the lines. I’m also going to make sure they know who it is attacking them, and why.” Mike eyes seemed to glow red with anger.

Roebuck nodded. He understood, he’d sought revenge once or twice himself. Draven also understood how hurt his friend was, and knew saying ‘no’ or ‘bad idea’ wouldn’t change his mind. Gilmore was more concerned, but she didn’t speak up.

“From here, we’ll move into Romulan territory. Let’s get it done.” Mike said.

Draven and Roebuck made notes on their PADDs as they left. Gilmore remained. “You okay? Want to talk?”

Mike and Ariel had dated once upon a time, in the early days of the Dominion War, before he and Janice met, after Ariel was posted to the Pegasus.

“I’m fine.” Mike replied as he tapped in commands on a holo-display.

“Mike.” She put her hand on his shoulder, “I’m here if you want to talk.”

Mike pulled away and turned toward Ariel, “Why would I talk about my late wife with you? You have I only dated for a brief time, then we didn’t even speak to each other for two years except in the line of duty. The most we’ve said to each other in the last few years has been hello in passing. So what could YOU possibly do or say that would help?”

Ariel took a step back. A tear rolled down her cheek as she turned to walk away.

Mike grunted, “Ariel, I apologize.”

Ariel looked back for a moment then left the room.

Mike paused for a moment, mad at himself. He shouldn’t have taken his anger out on her, but he also had so much built up anger that it clouded his judgement. Mike then went back to his task, there was one group of people that he needed to take his anger out on, and on them he would, the Romulans.

A few hours later

The cloaked Pegasus eased toward Mendak...

“Sensors are picking up a Romulan listening post on the surface. It’s not completed yet and it doesn’t have any defensive arrays or on the surface.” Gilmore reported from Science One.

“I’m picking up two Valdor type Warbirds in orbit with three Romulan construction transports.” Ramata’tar added.

“That listening post has a good bit of work left, so it’s not tied into their network yet, there’s nothing for me to get any intel from.” Draven added from the Intel position.

“Then we blow it up.” Roebuck added.

“Full impulse Chief, bring us up under them once we’re in phaser canon range, then we’ll decloak, target the closest warbird, and rip them apart.” Mike said.

The Pegasus closed in. When she decloacked, the Pegasus unleased hell on the Romulans! Phaser canon, hellfire torpedoes, and pulse phasers ripped into the unprotected ventral side of the first Valdore and it exploded.

As the big Galaxy Refit turned, the other Valdore raised its shields and opened fire. Their pulse disruptors hit the Pegasus’s shields as she fired back with quantum torpedoes from her aft launches and phaser beams from her arrays. The Pegasus continued her turned and her forward phasers and photon torpedoes made quick work of one, then two of the construction ships.

Then the Pegasus came to a sudden stop and as the Valdore passed under the Pegasus her phaser canon took aim and fired, ripping a hole through the Romulan ship. A couple of photon torpedoes later and the ship was dead in the water. As the Pegasus increased speed again she strafed the helpless Romulan ship with her phaser arrays.

The Pegasus closed in on the last construction vessel and heavily damaged it, but didn’t destroy it. The Pegasus then focused her attention on the facility on the surface, fired a couple of photon torpedoes, and obliterated it.

“Open a channel to the construction ship.” Mike said as he stood.

“Channel open.” K’Wor said from Ops.

“Romulan ship, this the USS Pegasus. Take this as a final warning, keep your ships out of the Triangle. If we find anymore Typhon Pact ships here, they’ll suffer the same fate.” Mike said over the comm. At the same time, a final salvo from the Pegasus destroyed the drifting Valdore.

“The Romulans closed the channel and are trying to warp out. They’re damaged engines can barely make warp two.” K’Wor reported.

Mike sat down in his chair. “Gilmore, leave a Class VII probe fitted with a micro-cloaking device above the northern pole. If they return, I want to know about it.”

“Yes sir. It’ll be ready to launch in ten.” Gilmore replied coldly.

“Thank you.” Mike said.

Once the probe was launched, the Pegasus cloaked. “Set course for the Ge’tura system. Warp eight.” Mike ordered.

“Ge’tura is home to Romulan Defense Base 30.” Roebuck said.

“And to a forward repair facility for vessels on the Klingon front.” Draven added.

“And that’s our next target.” Mike said. “Engage.”
