Mission:
Episode 103 - In The Darkest Days...
Location: USS Calidorn/Starbase 400/USS Pegasus
Timeline: MD3 0020hrs
ON:
The USS Calidorn slowly pulled up beside Starbase 400. In the distance one of the external docking bays designed for smaller vessels like Defiant and Interceptor classes was being readied.
Jarovik and Brunel escorted the survivors they had picked up on Peloi to the transporter room.
Mike was extremely quiet, he hadn't spoken to anyone in the hours since he and his brother had spoken after he learned about Janice's death.
Once they arrived in the transporter room, Jarovik had everyone beamed to the station except for Bremer, K'Temoc, and K'Wor. He and Antony walked over to Mike and extended their hands.
"I am really sorry about Janice, Mike." Jarovik said.
"As am I. I wish the old girl here hadn't pushed back on our field repairs so we could have rushed to the Durga's aid." Brunel added.
Mike nodded. "Thank you both."
After a brief awkward silence K'Temoc stepped forward and shook Micheal and Tony's hands too. K'Wor followed, and both men commented on how he'd grown since the last time they saw in many years before when he was still a small boy.
After dematerializing back aboard Starbase 400 Mike was met by Dow and Draven. Both men were eager to share their sympathy with Mike but he held up his hand to stop them.
"Pat are you still planning to escort the transports carrying the Kaleb IV civilians that agreed to leave back to Earth?" Mike asked.
"Uh, yeah, the Reprisal is scheduled to depart at zero-eight hundred hours." Dow replied confused.
"I'm sending Christopher to stay with Janice's parents until the crisis is over. Typhon Pact ships lurking in the Triangle, it's only a matter of time before they attack here again." Mike replied.
"Of course, I'll watch after him myself." Dow replied.
"Jo Ann and George Ann Worth will be watching over him too and will accompany." Mike added. The Worth twins had been long time friends of Janice's while they were in the Starfleet Marine Corps and after they resigned from the Corps. Several times over the years they had acted as nurse maids and babysitters for him, and Mike knew they would take care of him.
"Lek, send all intel you have on Typhon Pact activity in the Triangle, as well as within Romulan space to the Pegasus." Bremer ordered.
"Sure." Draven replied, "I'll also add the Calidorn's reports to it." Draven was also wondering why Mike wanted the intel sent to the Pegasus, but after a moment he had an idea.
"K'Temoc, update Admiral T'Lar on everything that's happened. K'Wor you better report to Sick Bay so they can make sure you're okay." Mike added before he left the transporter room.
As he rode the Turbolift to Level 708, he tapped his comm-badge. "Commander Robuck, First Ramta'tar, Doctor Mclintock, CPO Branson, Warrant Officer Blackthorne, Lieutenant Robinson, Lieutenant Gilmore report to the Pegasus and be ready to depart in an hour."
Mike then leaned against the wall of the wall the turbolift and tried to figure out what he was going to tell his ten year old son.
The minutes passed slowly, but the doors finally opened. Mike slowly walked to his quarters and stepped inside. After the doors closed Mike paused and looked around. Family pictures were everywhere. Janice's old style television was sitting in the corner. Mike walked to it and ran his hand over the top before he took a deep breath. Finally he walked into Christopher's room. He was sound asleep and Mike didn't want to disturb him, but he knew he had to tell him about his mother.
Mike laid down beside his son for a moment and just watched him sleep before he gently woke him up.
Yawning, Christopher blinked a few times, "You're back Daddy. Did you find K'Wor?"
Mike forced a smile, "We did. He's okay. He's in sick bay getting checked over."
"Good, he'll be able to play with me some tomorrow." Christopher said.
"Actually, I'm sending you to Earth to stay with your grandparent for a while. Miss Jo Ann and Miss George Ann are going to take you aboard Mister Dow's ship. Once the war is over you'll be back here." Mike smiled, but the smile quickly faded.
"Daddy, what's wrong?" Christopher asked.
Mike hugged his son for a moment, then looked at him, "There's something I need to tell you. Something happened to mommy..."
It was hard for Mike to explain to his son, and in a way a ten year old might understand. After they talked and cried together Mike took the time to rock his son back to sleep, and once he had him settled back into bed Mike let the Worth twins know what had happened and that he needed them to escort Christopher to Earth.
A little over an hour later Mike arrived aboard the Pegasus. He was met in Transporter Room Three by K'Wor and Draven.
"I thought I told you to go to Sick Bay." Mike said to his son.
"I did, Doctor Mclintock checked me out when I beamed over." K'Wor replied.
"All intel has been uploaded." Draven added. "When do we depart?"
"Immediately. Cloak and set course for the Triangle. I'll be on the Bridge in a few minutes." Mike replied.
Draven nodded and headed for the Bridge leaving just Mike and K'Wor.
"Dad, I...I want to talk to you about something. Christopher, don't shut him out or leave him behind like you did Becca and me during the Dominion War. He just wants to be near you." K'Wor said.
Mike paused. "We're going behind enemy lines, you think the Pegasus is a good place for him right now?"
"No, of course not. Just, don't make him feel alone or forgotten. He's already lost one parent." K'Wor said.
"K'Wor, this..." Mike stopped, took a breath, and tried to smile at his oldest son, "You're right. You've gotten wise in the last few years." He patted K'Wor on the shoulder as they left the transporter room.
Walking to the bridge anger and hate came over Mike again as he thought about the mission, Janice, and the Romulans. His Klingon blood boiled and he was determined to make them pay.
Entering the Bridge Mike didn't wait for the doors to fully open. "K'Wor, take Ops. Roebuck you'll act as XO. Ramata'tar, you have Tactical. Cloak the ship. Once we're cloaked, Chief set course for the Triangle and engage at slipstream."
Mike took his seat in the Captain's Chair and stated at the view screen. Moments later the Pegasus disappeared from view and pulled away from Starbase 400. Once clear of the inner marker she shot away at warp, then entered her slipstream tunnel and toward the Triangle.
