Personality & Traits
Strengths & Weaknesses | Ariel views Science as a balancing act between gaining new knowledge and the moral implication that knowledge has both in it being acquired and its implementation. Her curiosity and determination are her greatest strengths towards maintaining this balance, but they are also her greatest weakness. In situations where the line between the two becomes blurred, Ariel will sometimes allow her curiosity to get the better of her and not always see the long-term results. Ariel will always do what she believes is right, and would never knowingly do anything that would conflict with her duties or conscience. |
|
Ambitions | Ariel currently wishes to continue her career in Starfleet in the hopes of possibly commanding a ship or science facility of her own one day. While her personal life has often taken a back burner to her career, the prospect of marrying and starting a family is a goal she hopes to be able to achieve in the near future. | |
Hobbies & Interests | Inheriting her mothers "Green Thumb", Ariel enjoys botany as a hobby. Her quarters have been known to contain a wide variety of exotic plants and flowers, which include such far places as Cetus III and New Talax. She also enjoys Fantasy based literature, Holo-novels, and dancing. Her favorite color is blue, and her quarters are decorated with various shades of it. |
Personal History | Ariel is the youngest of the three Gilmore children and spent most of her early years growing up on Earth. Ariel was born on March 24, 2353, on Betazed, but relocated to Earth shortly after when her mother was made head of the Marcus Research Center. Her father, then Captain Christopher Gilmore, was assigned to the USS Isis on a long-term exploration mission and was absent for much of Ariel's childhood. After her completion of primary school, Ariel's brother Cameron entered Starfleet Academy while her sister attended medical school a year later. Ariel's father returned to Earth shortly after, and decided to relocate Ariel and her mother with him to his new command at Starbase 27. The Starbase proved to be a fountain of knowledge and experiences for Ariel, and she took every opportunity to assist her mother who was now the Starbase's Chief Science Officer. With the practical experiences she gained and private tutoring from her mother, Ariel completed her secondary education at age 14. Realizing that his daughter had a passion for scientific endeavors, her father arranged for Ariel to attend the Vulcan Science Academy under an early admissions policy. The Science Academy provided Ariel with a firm foundation in various Scientific Fields, but the work load was grueling. The Vulcan approach to Science was strongly rooted in logic and practical application, but Ariel felt that a more human approach was also necessary in order to truly understand the field. Despite the differences of philosophies, she managed to graduate four years later with degrees in Biology, Chemistry, and Genetics. After graduation, Ariel was briefly reunited with her parents when her father had been assigned Command of the USS Polaris. The Gilmore family later returned to Earth to celebrate Ariel's brother's promotion to Lieutenant and his assignment to his ship's Chief Security and Tactical position. After speaking to her brother about his experiences in the fleet, Ariel decided to follow in the Gilmore family tradition and apply to Starfleet Academy. Ariel excelled during her Academy years, and was a top student in most of her classes. Science was still her passion, but she found the prospect of the Command filed exciting and challenging as well. During her junior year, Ariel added several extra courses to her already hectic schedule in the hopes of gaining some insight into Command procedures and mindset. While the Science field came easily for her, the burdens that a Command officer had to endure were much more of a stretch for her personality and overly curious nature. While it was a plus for her to be eager and curious about things, she found that Commanders had to possess a strict control over how much indulgence they could exude in such matters. Tactical issues, diplomacy, and even Engineering knowledge that Ariel had not planned upon made up just a small part of what the Command courses involved. Although Ariel learned a great deal about herself during this training, she had to struggle to maintain passing marks in her Command classes. Despite the hardships, Ariel rose to the challenge and graduated 4th in her class with a specialization in General Sciences and Physics. Her Command course grades had cost her the coveted 1st position, but she felt the experiences gave her more of an edge in practical experiences than her fellow Science graduates. |
