Episode 102 - The Rising Tide of War

Smothering a yawn, running a hand through his hair, Doctor Mendez called up the latest blood work. He had lost track of how many he had stayed back to review but as his calendar was suddenly free, he figured he’d make himself useful. His gaze, as ever, glanced over the top two sections of data. Downloading the full blood panel to allow him to write up his notes, he slid off the stool and headed into ICU.
Doctor Harris’ instructions had been clear and he followed his direction to the letter. Leaving Nurse Bell to watch over their patient, he retreated to the doctors lounge and got to work. He wondered if Harris would let him have a first year student to do this for him - they were pretty much useless otherwise. He grinned as he sat down with a coffee, knowing exactly what Doctor Corrigan would say to that.
Begining to write up the notes, he was mid-sip when his eyes skimmed further down the blood analysis. At which time he coughed, spluttered and covered half the couch with his Latte. Gathering up his PADDS he left the mess and his drink, rushing towards the door in such a hurry that he tripped on the table leg and was sent sprawling to the floor.
“I’m okay!” He announced to the empty room, jumping back up to his feet. Deep breath he told himself, regaining his composure. Picking up his belongings he set off for the office where Doctor Harris was studying a monitor.
“Doctor Harris, we started the scan,” he said in greeting. “But the blood work showed something else. I cannot believe it didn’t jump out at me before but look. The hormones ... Doctor Corrigan is pregnant. Two weeks or there abouts.”
Harris who'd been sipping tea almost spewed it over the monitor. "I'm sorry I had a mental lapse for a second... can you repeat that?"
“HCG, it is showing up in the blood work,” Mendez told him. “Low levels, but increasing. Doctor Corrigan is pregnant.”
Harris placed his head in his hands. "He'll kill me. I'm a dead man."
Mendez frowned, it was not exactly the reaction he expected. “By He, you mean..?”
"Hades. When he finds out he'll have me air locked....possible disembowelled. He sees Carolyn as his sister. The man who got her pregnant..." He shuddered. "I'm a dead man."
Mendez gave a low whistle. “Guess it is good she’s been in surgery for god knows how long now and he doesn’t know what is going on. I mean, you might have a month or two before it’s obvious ... you could make it quite far.”
He looked up at Mendez. "Don't be daft. I'm not leaving her or my child." His mind was working a mile a minute..."Assuming that it is my child....I mean I'm pretty sure it is but pregnancy from me is rare. Can you do a determinations can?"
“I’m not even asking why but yeah,” Mendez nodded. “I’ll run them now. Unofficially, I assume?”
"Yes. Let's run the test." He stood. "Let's do it now." They walked to Carolyn's room. Harris took her hand. "Run the scan." He held out his arm to allow Mendez to take a DNA sample.
With a nod, Mendez collected the sample, “give me a few minutes and I’ll run it through the lab,” he said as he hurried out.
Harris sighed. "Oh Carolyn. How did this happen....never mind I know how but...this can't end well."
A few minutes could feel so much longer when waiting. Even to Mendez it seemed to take forever. Yet the second the results came through he downloaded the data before deleting it from the mainframe as a ‘training test sample’.
“Time flies and all that,” he said as he entered the room. “I think congratulations are in order, Doctor.”
He groaned. "So I am the father of Carolyn's child?" He grinned. "Sorry .... this is not a grinning matter." He continued to grin. "I can't seem to stop."
“Maybe you should sit down,” Mendez advised, pushing a chair up behind his colleague who looked almost deliriously happy. “Take it from what you said before that kids weren’t likely?”
He sighed, "Because of certain...medical procedures it is difficult for me to have a child with someone who did not undergo the same procedures....difficult but not impossible. Although the odds of her loosing the child are high." He thought a moment. "Listen. I need your help. Get her ready to travel. When she wakes up I'm taking her to safety until whatever happened here is clensed out."
Mendez eyes widened, “of course I can but ... you can’t just go. For one thing she might not want to. And you explain it how exactly?”
He paused, “be reasonable and patient. The scan will be done in the morning. Counsellor Monroe can sit with her while you do your visit to Hades and we can analyse the data. You need to give her a say in this. And Hades needs to be told something...”
"I agree with the jig-a-low." A woman's voice said. Kitana had moved like a silent wind. She held a mean looking dagger. "I am Kitana, daughter of Hades and you two...have just earned yourselves a dinner invitation."
Mendez paled, “me?! What the -?! Harris?!”
"Kitana! Enough! Seventeen years go I delivered you. Stop being....your mother."
Kitana growled. "Enough Aldivian Slug. You both lied to my father, you both were hiding....this." She indicated Carolyn, “and now you admit that you are the father of her child. Let's go. If you don't go I will being my father here. I am sure once he hears of all this he'll be here in...what is it human's say, a flash."
“Okay okay,” Mendez said quickly. “There is no need for that dagger. This is a medical bay! Put it away and we will come along and Harris will explain it all.”
He gave Harris a nudge, “don’t make her angry.”
Harris smiled, "She won't be angry. You see, young lady. I've been at this longer then you. Sure you can tell your father about all this but what will he do when he learns you've been making goo goo eyes at the Klingon from the USS Tenger. He was an Engineer?"
Kitana growled and spit.
Harris smiled. "Now run along little child and let me and Mendez work."
"I shall return for you." She headed out.
Harris sighed. "Well that went well."
In response Mendez laughed, “you aren’t wearing that dagger so yeah, it did. Will she tell him?”
"Oh yes... Listen stay here. Watch Carolyn. Make sure she's okay. I'll go take my lumps with Hades...besides you're my surgeon if something goes wrong."
“I’ll have the OR standing by,” Mendez commented drily, watching him go. Alone he plopped down in the chair and glanced at Carolyn, “so... our boss might end up in the Brig on murder charges. What’s new with you?”
