Hades had gotten to sickbay in record time. He was mad as hell. He'd missed all that happened and he now had several people here because of a mad man. He'd ordered Carolyn put on bed rest and now stormed towards her room.
”... out of this bed again, I will have them restrain you,” Nurse Kyle warned as she adjusted the blankets, un-phased by the silence that followed her warning. With a sigh she turned on her heels and headed for the door, carrying in one hand the crutches she had been ordered by Dr. Mendez to confiscate. Almost at the door she smiled, “Dr. Hades. How lovely to see you. Come on in, I’m all done. Call if you need anything.”
Carolyn glared at the woman’s retreating back. She cursed Mendez in every language she knew, furious that he had caught her after she had left Ariana’s bedside. If positions were reversed she knew she’d be the same but she was in no mood to think of anything logically.
“Did you come to bust me out?” She asked hopefully.
Hades lumbered into the room, his face deep red and Harris on his heels. "Of all the ignorant, self-sabotaging...Does anyone care one bit about my orders!"
Harris, trying to get Carolyn's attention, was giving her the keep quiet sign that was quite universal. "First Splendora checks herself out of sickbay, then my own wife drugs me and leaves the station, then this." He motioned wildly to the bed. "Is every woman in my life trying to give me a heart attack!"
“Kalani did what?!” Carolyn blurted out, unable to stop herself.
"The man woman drugged me so she could leave the station!"
“No, she wouldn’t do -“shifting on the bed she broke off, swallowing back a string of curses as she slumped back onto the bed. “She wouldn’t just go. She loves you. She wouldn’t hurt you like that...”
Harris was grinning "Of course not. She just..."
Hades glared at Harris but before he could say anything he was called away from the room. "Don't move!" He leveled a finger at Carolyn. "If she leaves this room you’re done!" He threw at Harris as he left.
“Like I’d be in this bed if I had a choice,” Carolyn muttered, staring at ceiling. “You don’t have to stay there, I’m hardly making a run for it. I can’t walk without help and they took the crutches away because of my bad behaviour. No walking or even crawling out this room for at least another eighteen hours.”
"With the way he's feeling now...I'm safer here." He pulled up a chair smiling. "Got to hand it to Kalani. She's really a piece of work."
“I don’t understand,” Carolyn admitted, a deep frown etched on to her forehead. “Why? Why drug him? Is she in trouble or something?”
"Our CMO forbade her to go to Kaleb IV for work so she decided to put him to sleep and go anyway. She then volunteered to go to Klingon space and now is off with Splendora to Klingon space."
“Oh...” Carolyn said slowly. “That is ... going to be an awkward conversation when she comes home. Don’t suppose you’d bust me out of here?”
Harris laughed, "Not a chance. As for the conversation not so awkward. He wants to bubble wrap everyone and keep them safe. He needs to learn that he can't protect her or Splendora, or you. You can't tell me that he's not over protective... of all of us. He needs to trust us to care for ourselves."
“I doubt he’ll listen to me on that. At least not today,” she muttered. “Maybe you should try having that chat with him.”
"When he realizes he's being dumb about all this." He sighed, "I seriously think he needs to take a break."
“You could have a boys weekend away,” she quipped as she tapped the button to administer some more pain relief. “Or is this another conversation the official Scooby Gang can’t have with him?”
He laughed, "Yeah, the second one."
“So brave,” she muttered. Hearing footsteps approaching she sighed. “I’m making no promises.”
Hades entered. He leveled Harris with a look that had the man leaving.
When he was gone Hades sat down and looked at Carolyn. "How do you feel?"
Such a simple question and one she had either avoided answering altogether or said “I’m fine”. Neither would wash with him. “I’m honestly not sure. Sore. Every time I look in a mirror I have more bruises appearing. It’s like a blanket of greens, blues and purple.”
She held up one arm, turning it to show the rainbow of colours blossoming over her skin. “But bruises fade. Mendez said I made my back worse when I was walking around so he’s not happy with me at all. Really my side and back took the worst of it.“
She sighed, staring up at the ceiling. “Aside from that I don’t know what to feel. Angry. At him. At myself. Grateful that Liam showed up when he did. Thankful that everyone is going to recover thanks to the medical staff. Frustrated because I am not allowed to even try standing on my own two feet without help. Hungry. Scared.”
She took a deep breath, reaching up to wipe away a tear as she blinked away any more. Looking towards Hades she offered a small smile, “so same old. Feel like having a vacation?”
He sighed. Without word he walked to the replicator and ordered up a breakfast. He stepped out and was back with a small package within a minute. Walking over to the replicator he picked up the tray and brought it and the packet to Carolyn. He placed the tray on her lap. "Hungry I can help." He placed the packet there. "Chocolate." He then sat next to her and put his arm around her as he would his sister. "Scared I can help too. You are going to be alright and I'll make sure of that."
She smiled, resting her head on his shoulder. “More bubble wrap?” She teased, though her voice wasn’t quite hitting the right tone. “I survived worse. I’ll be fine. I was more scared for Ariana. I couldn’t get to her to help her and the he was there -“
She broke off, looking at the food. “Share with me? Sedatives wear off better if you eat properly.”
He let out a little growl. "Yes there is that. My own wife!" He sighed. "As for Ariana you did what you could. He will be dealt with one way or another," he said darkly.
“She loves you, a lot,” Carolyn reminded him, peering up at him. “It’s hard to find that balance when you have both been living alone, doing your own thing. Harris told. He’s worried. I’m to try and convince you to take a break and realise you can’t put us all in bubble wrap. And yes, I completely pointed out how ironic that would be.”
She pushed her tray towards him. “Please eat and promise me you aren’t planning on putting someone out an airlock...”
"I like airlocks," he said snagging a fry.
“I like having you around and not in the brig,” she said, taking a bite. “I’m sorry for making you worry.”
He shrugged. "It seems all the women in my life enjoy that part." He sighed. "You need to rest now." He moved away. "Promise me that when things like this arise you will come to me."
“I’m not tired,” she lied. “And I promise, if I’d known he was insane and not just creepy as hell, I would have. You know scary people.”
"I do indeed. Creepy is usually insane. As for our friend he will have to go to Earth for punishment." A grin spread on Hades' face. "That means he'll pass by First Federation Space. My colony is there. He might get a side trip there."
“I’m glad you’re my friend,” Carolyn admitted as she smothered a yawn, “because you scare me sometimes ...”
He laughed, "Alright. To bed with you." He tucked her in as if she were a child and placed a kiss on her forehead. "Sleep well little dove."
“You’re so ...” whatever she was about to say became an incoherent murmur as tiredness, aided by the pain relief kicked in. For a moment her hand held onto his as if just to be sure he was there before it slipped down onto the bed.
Hades sighed. He left the room and headed to his office. He had a monumental amount of paperwork to do before he went off to see Bremer. He needed, for the first time, to seek advice.
