Mission:
Episode 97 - Cultural Exchange
Location: Various
Timeline: MD2 1430hrs
ON:
After meeting with Draven, Rann, and Glen Koval, Mike was more concerned about this Cardassia Gul he just ‘met’ and wished he hadn't allowed Splendore to beam to his ship. He was also more concerned about the potential rouge Section 31 agent. His top Intel people knew very little about it, and the Cardassians knew even less.
Mike met his wife, Captain Dow, and Admiral Ward in Transporter Room Three and beamed over from the Pegasus to the new USS Odyssey where he met Vice Admiral T’Lar, Lieutenant General Dartt, and Captain DaSilvor in the transporter room. They were escorted to large conference room where they were greeted by Starfleet Commander and Chief Fleet Admiral Akaar, Starfleet Deputy CnC Admiral Toddman, Chief of Starfleet Operations Vice Admiral Janeway, and members of the Starfleet Command Staff Admirals Watson and Bello. Also there was Alpha Quadrant Commanding Officer Fleet Admiral Cartwright and Beta Quadrant Commanding Officer Fleet Admiral Sevlek. It was the first time they had seen Sevlek since he departed Starbase 400 over a year before. Other high ranking officers there were Vice Admiral Sisko of DS9, Captain Dax of the USS Aventine, Captain Chakotay of the USS Voyager, Captain Ro of the USS Ashalla, Rear Admiral Greer of SB501, Rear Admiral Sh'tillahr of SB773, and several others.
“A lot of brass in here.” Dow whispered.
“Jealous?” Mike replied with a smirk.
"Not at all." Dow replied, flashing a smile.
“Thank you all for coming.” Toddman started. “And welcome aboard the new USS Odyssey. We’ll keep this brief. After this you’re all welcome to tour the new standard in Federation Starships, return to your own ships, or beam down to Cardassia and enjoy day one of this cultural exchange. You all are the senior leaders of Starfleet that are here. You’ll notice a few invited faces missing. Rear Admiral Riker, Captain Worf, Captain Kim, and Captain La Forge…they are all currently in the Delta Quadrant continuing the work that Fleet Admiral Bremer and Admiral T’Lar started with the Talaxians last year.”
While he paused, several people turned and looked back at Mike and Deela and either smiled or gave respectful nods.
“This is a new era for the Federation and for the Galaxy. Never before have we had active exploration and diplomatic missions in all four quadrants ongoing at the same time!” Toddman added as several people clapped.
Fleet Admiral Akaar then spoke, “This is a testament to all of you, your crews, all Starfleet personnel that help us keep the peace while boldly going forward. However, there is a shadow looming, and while relations between the Alliance and the Typhon Pact are strained, I remain hopeful that this cold war will not turn into open conflict. Now, enjoy this week and this first annual cultural exchange between Alliance members. Remind your crews to conduct themselves professionally and friendly. We may all come from different worlds, have different skin color, have different religious believes, come from different backgrounds, and even entered Starfleet for different reasons…but I believe we were called for this moment, to show the Alliance and the galaxy that peace will prevail and this is but one example of how things can be when we all come together.”
Several people clapped again before the crowd broke up into smaller groups. Some heading for the Bridge to tour the ship, others went to the transporter room to go somewhere else.
Mike stood talking to Janice for a moment when Admiral Toddman walked up. “Do you have a minute?”
“Of course.” Mike replied.
“I saw where you planned to promote a member of your crew, R'nard Lokran, to Captain.” Toddman said.
“Yes, he’s been with Starbase 400 and the USS Essex before that for a long time. He’s deserving and I believe will make either a good instructor at Starfleet Academy or even a ship’s commanding officer one day.” Mike replied. “Why do you ask?”
“That he will, but not right now.” He handed Mike a PADD. “These are transfer orders. A situation has arisen and Lokran’s unique talents and abilities will be needed. Mike, we need the Shadow Demon.”
Mike took the PADD from Toddman and looked it over. There was no information about the mission, just transfer orders. “And this is effective immediately.” Toddman added. Mike looked back at T’Lar, she had served with Lokran longer than any of them.
Deela remembered when Lokran joined the Essex seven years ago and knew his history so she wasn't surprised to see him go. She knew this day would come, eventually, "Understood. He will be greatly missed." She saw a familiar face, Vice Admiral Janeway, "Excuse me."
Toddman then took another step forward and lowered the volume of his voice. “I also saw your inquiry about a Section 31 agent named Delar. Speaking as the former Head of Starfleet Security, he’s a deep cover agent that even Section 31 has disavowed at times. He recently escaped from a Starfleet facility and is considered quite dangerous. Speaking as the current Starfleet Deputy CnC, don’t go looking down that rabbit hole.” Toddman replied.
“I’m afraid I can’t do that. A civilian that lives aboard Starbase 400 has…” Mike started before Toddman cut him off.
“Splendora Sage.” He said. “I’m not making this an order, just a strong recommendation. Don’t go digging into this. I know you’ve had more than your fair share of interactions with Secton 31 over the years, but this one could turn out far more differently than you expect.” Toddman’s tone was serious. “Same goes for Gul Aiden.”
“Aye sir.” Mike slowly replied. He didn’t like it. It was his duty to protect those lived aboard Starbase 400, as well as anyone that clearly needed help. He didn’t know Splendora well, he’d just met her, but she fit into both of those categories.
Toddman gave a respectful nod, then walked away.
Dow walked back over and glanced at Janice then at Mike. “What’s your plan?”
“It’s not my plan. It’s Tom Vercetti’s.” Mike replied before tapping his commbadge. “Bremer to Vercetti, you’re a go.”
“Understood.” Tom replied before the comm channel closed.
Mike took a breath, then looked back at his staff. “Please, enjoy yourselves. Look around this new pride and joy of theirs, head down to the planet, your time is yours.”
Jewel stood up and tucked at her uniform, she had always wanted to meet Captain Sisko who was now Rear Admiral. Taking a deep breath she walked up to him, "It's nice to finally meet you, Admiral." Jewel said as she extended her hand towards him. Even though she had never had the honor of working with him or under his command she admired him.
Sisko looked at the General for a moment, then flashed the smile he was known for, shaking her hand. "It's a pleasure to meet you, General..." He didn't know her name and was hoping she would tell him before he had to ask.
She almost forgot to tell him who she was she turned a bit red hopefully not noticeable. "Jewel Dartt, Chief Diplomatic Officer aboard Starbase 400." She said in return.
"Ah, one of Mike's senior officers. The honor is mine General." After letting go of her hand, Sisko straightened his uniform. "How long have you been aboard Starbase 400? I don't remember meeting you the last time I was there."
"I had arrived on board shortly after you left, so almost six years ago," Jewel replied with a smile. "After my retirement due to health issues I decided that a change was nice and been the Diplomatic Officer ever since." Jewel replied with a smile.
"Ah." Ben understood. Sometimes, everyone needed to take a break from a warrior....except maybe a Klingon? "Do you have plans for your time on Cardassia?"
"Was going to take my two oldest children to see some lectures and then try out the different food they will have." Jewel replied, "what do you have planned?" She asked out of curiosity.
"I have a meeting with an old...acquaintance later. I plan to visit the fair as well." He looked over at Mike, "Kasidy, Jake, and Rebecca will beam down later and we'll go taste testing." He smiled again.
She nodded, "Well Admiral it was a pleasure to meet you, hopefully will see you again." Jewel said with a smile and then looked at Mike as well.
Mike motioned toward the turbolift.
