***** Briefing Room Six - Starbase 400 *****
Rachael Yamaguchi looked around at the three dozen or so other children who wanted to fly Starfighters and be badasses, fly through the starbase doors while they were three quarters closed and pull all sorts of stunts.
Rachael was one of only two who had done real sim time and Rachael had by far the most sim time but she did not know that fact, she had brought her files on a PADD including her hours and record. her gunnery was about forty percent and her flying was extremely good.
She was sitting in the fifth row as she waited for the Major to arrive as she thought. "I wonder how the Major will deal with the other people here... I know she's not a great fan of me.." she paused as a smile crossed her face. "so I'll need to earn it without worry of favoritism." she thought to herself. "Excellent." she said that last word aloud.
She didn't know anyone else in the room which she was fine with, she noticed the nervous, concerned and worried looks as they waited. Luckily she had not noticed Aryssa sitting in the back row, looking bored out of her skull.
Rachael closed her eyes as she mentally pulled herself together, she heard the doors open and in walked a middle aged woman wearing a pilots uniform, here was the major.
"When a command officer enters a room, you stand at attention," Phoenix barked to the young junior cadets. She was followed by a graying male Vulcan in a pilot's flight suit with Lieutenant Colonel clusters.
Behind him was an even older female NCO in the regular duty uniform.
Once all the students were seated, Phoenix pointed to her entourage.
"Lieutenant Colonel Kovark and Master Gunnery Sargent Eunice Joins are recently retired flight operations soldiers with a combined number of a hundred and six years of experience," Phoenix pointed out respectfully. "They will instruct you on the various jobs available in Starfighter Command, as well as teaching you how to fly... if you make the grades."
And with that, Phoenix left the podium and allowed Kovark to take his command.
"Thank you Major Sullivan," he spoke with a nod of his head. "Cadets, you may be seated."
Aryssa did so and looked a bit surprised to see Rachael in the audience.
"A cadet's flight status will not be given until this semester has been completed. This is so the flights get their command structure in place and those that wish to learn to fly are given equal opportunity to learn," Kovark announced. "However, Major Sullivan is still here because she is willing to look over certifications and time sheets of any cadet that wishes to expedite the process."
Phoenix gave a nod to the room and waited for any cadet to bring her their documents.
Rachael looked around the room as she hauled herself to her feet as she came to the front of the room with a minimum of fuss, nobody else clearly had any documentation of any sort as she nodded to the Major before offering Phoenix her PADD that she held in her hands. "My documentation sir." she commented as she was unsure if she should salute or not.
Phoenix took it and waited for Kovark to continue.
"Basic military protocol calls for subordinates to salute officers entering a room, upon being given an order in a non-front line unit, and any other time where respect is given." Kovark watched as Phoenix finally flagged off Rachael to go to her seat.
Racheal crisply saluted the Major but didn't say anything before returning to her seat.
"Master Gunny Joins will now talk about the uniform," Kovark announced as he left the podium, only for Joins to take his place.
"Thank you Sir." Joined saluted the Vulcan and then continued with, "Orientation day is usually filled with the most information about day-to-day military function. In front of your computer screens now should be the uniform code. I will server as your quartermaster until the cadet corps gets their first NCO - Non Commissioned Officer, to take over."
"All cadets will be issued three sets of the junior cadet duty uniform at the end of the day," Phoenix amended. "BDUs, Class-A dress, and the like will be given out once your CO has his flight teams, cadet command staff, and drill teams assembled."
"All girls need to come with Major Sullivan and myself to be fit for your uniforms. Boys go with Colonel Kovark," the retired NCO ordered.
"You will wear your uniforms during school hours, like real officers do for shifts," Kovark informed. "I would study your dress code very closely because tomorrow will be your first inspection."
"Girls with us, then," Phoenix prodded to a smaller room off the right, which held racks of unissued uniforms for the cadets.
A few of the girls mentally didn't want to wear the uniform while in school for fear of being picked on and teased about it, Rachael for her part did not care about it as she and half the room made their way towards one of the doors, the boys all got up and headed for the other room designated.
"Give us two lines, each single-file and wait to be fitted," Joins called out.
Aryssa made the point of not being in the line Phoenix was measuring.
"Girls are not to have nail polish on and their hair is to be off the collar," Phoenix called out to the girls as she began measuring an older Trill teen with blond hair. "The three duty sets are so you do your own laundry. No wrinkles. Boots shinned. Belt buckle polished."
Phoenix flagged the first girl off after she put the girls measurements in. Joins likewise did the same. And Phoenix froze only a moment when she was face to face with Rachael again.
Rachael regarded Phoenix with a soft smile as she quickly frowned and gave the tiniest shake her of her head, it was better then protecting her thoughts into the Majors mind, she received her uniform package as she respectfully saluted the Major. "Thank you sir." and with that she moved on so the Major could check the person behind her in the line up.
A short time later they had all received their uniforms and were now ready for the next phase of their training as Rachael stood in line with everyone else as they waited for their next set of orders.
"Your badges act as guidance signals," the elderly Vulcan began. "You will download all maps of Flight Ops so that you know the designated pathways in which to travel. Being in unauthorized areas will be grounds for discipline via the Commander of the Air Group."
Phoenix just stood there and nodded, then excused herself once the Vulcan began to teach the class about the history of Starfighter Command.
Rachael sat at her desk as she watched and listened with rapt attention.
