Mission 75 - Time of Change
Timeline: After Admiral Bremer & Colonel Pike's post
Lee had just got finished talking with Admiral Bremer and had made it offical about Lee switching over to the Marines. Lee was walking around and talking with some of the people at the dinner. Lee then spotted Captain Harrison and he had sensed something was bothering her, he grabbed a couple glasses of wine and walked over to her.
Lee smiled offering her a glass:"Captain how are you?"
She turned around after staring at a picture on the wall. She then looked at Pike and the two glasses in his hand. She took one glass from him as she spoke, "Thank you. I'm doing okay. Just taking in the pictures of all the COs that have commanded the Enterprise. Quite impressive." She stared into her glass for a second before taking a sip.
Lee nodded taking a sip of wine himself:"Welcome, Yea it is quite impressive of all the CO's who have commanded the Enterprise. In fact my ancestor Christopher Pike was one of the CO's."
"I think I heard that somewhere. If I remember my history correctly, Pike was the first person to rise to captain in just four years. Once again, I'm very impressed."
Lee smiled at her: "So what do you think of Captain Picard retiring?"
She shrugged, "I think it's nice. I am surprised though that he didn't try for an admiralty position but to each his own I suppose. " She took a sip of her wine, "What about you?"
Lee stood there holding his glass:"I agree that it is nice that Captain Picard is retiring but to me it seems like don't think that Captain Picard seems like the type to be tied down to a desk is probably why he didn't try for an admiral postion."
"I guess your right. I might feel the same way, well, that is if I ever get command of my own." She added, "Maybe someday."
Lee finished the wine then looked at her: "So what do you think of our new Chief Medical Officer?"
Her smile left her face and she could feel her blood start to boil, "Don't even get me started. That arrogant, patronizing, condescending and" she realized that her voice started to hit another decibel so she lowered her voice, "annoying Romulan pain in my ass just rubs me the wrong way."
Alex gulped the last of her wine. "I wouldn't have a problem with her if she didn't think that we humans are such a weak and inferior race. It will be a miracle if she doesn't ruffle anyone's feathers while she's here." She looked at her empty glass and frowned. "I'm sorry. This just has been a really bad day for me."
Lee nodded:"She seems to be like a typical Romulan to me. "
Lee looked at his empty glass:"It's ok you look like you've had a bad day. Would you like another glass of wine or would you rather take a walk before the actual dinner starts?"
"Gee, thanks." Alex really wanted the wine but she had just finished up her third glass which gave her a buzz from drinking on an empty stomach, "Maybe a walk would be the smarter way to go."
Lee smiled:"Your welcome"
Alex gave him a half-smile. She was mentally kicking herself and now, she felt like she needed to explain, "I might have overreacted back there. Earlier, I received some news that my ex was killed. And it didn't help having to deal with the new CMO."
He then held out his arm:"Shall we go for that walk. It's ok understand, am sorry about your ex."
She took his muscular arm and walked with him, "The only good thing that came out of this marriage is my son. And now he can come live with me without anyone telling him no because my job is too dangerous. Is that irony or what?" She couldn't help but let out a small chuckle, "But I'm sure that you'd rather talk about something else other than my problems."
Lee nodded as they walked:"Sometimes things can be a bit weird. I know how hard it can be having your parent or parents be a member of Star Fleet, heck I was born on a starship myself." He smiled at her:"We can talk about anything that you feel like talking about."
Alex cocked her head as she looked up at the tall man, "It's funny. We've been on this ship together for a long time and we have never really talked. I just realized that the only thing I know about you is that you work out, obviously, you've served on several ships before coming here, you've never been married...heaven knows why and oh yeah, that you come from a long family of Starfleet Officers. Other than that, you're a mystery Mr. Pike. So tell me something about you that no one else knows."
Lee turned and looked at her:"Please call me Lee. Yes I do work out every day, been told that some marines have cringed at the word of a Pike workout. I just haven't found the right woman to be with to get married to." He then stopped and looked into her eyes:"There is one thing that no one knows and that is I am afraid to die alone, then when my time does come I won't be married or have had any kids."
"Now, that's deep. I tend to try not to think about dying. If I did, that will be the moment that I do."
Lee gave her a crooked smiled:"So Ms. Harrison, your a very attractive woman, why haven't you remarried and tell me something that no one else knows about you?"
"Call me Alex." She paused for a moment, "I've been told that I have trust issues when it comes to relationships stemming from my marriage. It's taken me a long time to realize that not all men are scumbags. And the one thing that no one knows is that I'm scared of being a mom to my 15 year old son and that maybe his father was right, that it might be too dangerous for him to be here with me." She exhaled, "I've never admitted that to anyone, not even to myself."
Lee smiled:"Everyone has some type of issue about something in their life. No matter where you go could be a dangerous place to raise a child, even raising them on Earth could be some type of danger."
"I guess your right." It made sense.
They started walking again:"The best place for your son to be is with his mother regardless of what others think. My father was a Marine and his in laws didn't like that their grandson was born on ship and was going to be raised on a ship but my parents didn't care cause I was their son and they felt that it was best for me to be with them."
"Smart parents. My ex's family and friends kept drumming into my head that Starfleet Officers shouldn't have kids, that it's dangerous, and that a ship is no place for a child. And then the judge said that they agreed and gave custody to my husband, I guess I started to think that just maybe they were right."
Lee smiled:"Thanks. Yea for the most part I thought that my parents where smart, and they where pretty supportive when I joined Star Fleet.
Alex finally came to a realization, "But it was all just mind games, wasn't it? And I fell for it. Don't I feel stupid." She was frustrated at herself and wished that she could skip this dinner and take her frustrations out on a punching bag.
Lee stopped and looked at her:"No you're not stupid, your ex and his family thought that what was best for your son was to be away from Star Fleet. And now am sure they won't be happy that he wants to come be with his mother, but they will have to get over it and if they don't then that's too bad for them."
"You're right. You are absolutely right. You know, you've really put everything into perspective for me. Thanks...Lee." Alex smiled at him as she felt so much better about everything.
"Why don't we head back to the dinner and tomorrow morning if you want I will teach you some Vulcan martial arts to help you with your frustrations and will even buy you breakfast."
"Breakfast and a lesson. I'd be crazy to pass up such an offer so the answer is yes, I'd like that."
Lee smiled and held out his arm again as they walked back to the dinner:"Very well meet you in holodeck 4 tomorrow at 0800."
"Holodeck 4 tomorrow. Gotcha."
