1,947 words; about a 10 minute read

Mission: Mission 83 - Recovery
Location: USS Vanguard
Timeline: After Nearing The Algorab System

"Two minutes to the edge of Algorab System Admiral."

Deela looked over at Lt. James, "Thank you." Deela was standing in front of her chair, watching the viewscreen. She still had a few concerns about the mission but they were minute. "Let Lt. Colonel Hurd know."

Deela sat down in her chair. Before Lt. James could announce that they had arrived, Deela spoke up, "Hold our position and scan the area."

Andrew got up from his seat and went over to Yamaguchi's station. He looked over her shoulder at the display. Moving to the adjacent station he punched up the sensor readings she was looking at. The system was strangely empty of shipping. "I'm not sure I like this, there is very little day to day ship movements in the system. I would have expected more basic transport traffic." He turned towards Yamaguchi, "Go to passive listening on the sensors, Lt Commander. I have a feeling they are on alert. Just listen for stray comms chatter, and ships movements. "

Yamaguchi nodded her head as she understood exactly what he requested of her, she had been monitoring Romulan com chatter and ship movements for exactly this reason but she showed him what her efforts had yielded, an area five light years squared, devoid of all ship activity and chatter whatsoever and the Algorab was smack in the middle. "I think your concerns are valid sir." she
said calmly to the older officer.

Clifford turned to look at the screen, "Admiral, do we know if the Lexington has carried out it's part the mission yet? If they have we maybe getting the after effects with other systems going to alert."

Deela shifted in her chair, "I doubt it. Last I heard, the Lexington has arrived at their destination and the shuttle has already taken off with the two teams."

Yamaguchi continued monitoring as she did not like surprises, unless they were from her rather sizable family which had accepted her as one of her own, she found that her quiet suspicion and natural aloofness helped her in most cases and now was shaping up to be one of those times. "The system is devoid of any ships sir, just two bases and the normal planets and moons sir."

Her eyes narrowed. "Not reading any chatter at all." Now she was glaring darkly at her panel, her concentration focused on her work and little else.

Holly was manning operations making sure that the ship was performing within all it's limits which is was so there was no doubt in her mind what the ship was receiving for data was real and that there was, so far, nothing going on internally to interfere with the caring out of their mission. This was a good thing considering that they were now going to have to be on high alert. She was doing her best to keep focused and to keep a close eye on the readings so to react at a moment's notice should the ship decide to do something out of the ordinary with itself.

She heard the comm that they had arrived. "Alright marines get ready," T'Lyn stated as she looked around, grabbing her gear and headed to where they needed to be.

Lennox heard the Major's order and he made one last check of his gear. He saw Gunnery Sergeant Ermey doing the same, then glanced at the Colonel. "Ready sir."

Andy looked at himself in the mirror and prepaired himself to begin the covert ops... Even if he had refused to take command of the operation from LTCOL Hurd he was the high ranking officer, since he was a qualified pilot he and MAJ Sullivan will have the responsibility to infiltrate the hangars and "borrow" a couple of transport to evacuate the personnel.

He made the final exercises to conceal his Betazoid telepathic skills and went to the deck...

Phoenix had a non-specified black wing suit on over the Romulan uniform. She was going through jump prep, checking her cords. And eventually made sure her right glove was securely on. What no one in the room knew, was that Phoenix's gloved hand was robotic and held no synthetic flesh around it. It had Federation tech all over the thing, thus she took special care to make sure the metal alloy was not visible.

She nodded as she looked around and watched the marines get ready for their task. She looked at Colonel Hurd, "Were ready whenever you are sir!" she stated as she was waiting for the go from him.

Andrew looked at the forward screen and took a deep breath, "Admiral, we're going to have to play this one very quietly. With your permission, warp 1. Continue into the system."

"Permission granted."

The helm officer punched the ship forward again and they slid silently deeper into the system. It was only a few minutes, but to Clifford it felt more like an hour, when Lt James announced, "In position, Admiral, Captain".

Still standing beside Lt Commander Yamaguchi, he continued to listen for any other ships or stray chatter. May be they are all just asleep he thought to himself.

Saying, in a low, hushed voice, but a voice that was still infused with confidence, The Col. Replied, ''Mission is a go, I say again, mission is a go.''

Deela was a little concerned about the Lexington's teams, that they'd get there before Hurd's team did and they would be exposed. Seeing that they finally took off, she relaxed a little. It was now all up to Hurd and his people.

Lennox was ready to go, now to get boots on the ground. He waited for the word...

Maal stood there at the ready. He was itching for some action and gave a big tooth filled grin.

Andrew looked up from the console he was working on. He looked over at the Admiral and nodded, she nodded back. Andrew tapped his comm badge, "Clifford to Hurd. On your way Colonel, it's all up to you marines, now. Good Luck!"

Andrew closed his comm badge at the acknowledgement, and settled back to wait.

The Marines arrived in Transporter Room four. Once everyone was on the padd, Hurd nodded to the Transporter Operator. The Vanguard took one last scan of the area, then beamed the Team into a wooded area just outside the Romulan base.

Once on the ground, Hurd nodded to General Jones and Major Sullivan as they headed off to the Hanger. Hurd then lead T'Lyn, Lennox, Maal, Duval, and Ermey toward the location they suspected the Commander to be.

"Remember, we're all disguised and dressed as Romulans. Keep your heads up, walk with purpose like you belong where you are. Any sign of being unsure will draw unwanted attention." Lennox reminded the group as they moved out.

Duvall nodded his head as he understood clearly what the Captain was telling the marines assigned to the mission, he thought it was not needed at this point but he followed silently as he smiled.

Maal didn't say a word as he kept walking bringing up the rear. He had to be probably the biggest Romulan ever.

Meanwhile on the bridge, Lt Commander Torilla Yamaguchi said softly. "Good Hunting guys."

Team 1

Lennox followed the Colonel toward the Romulan outpost. There were a few Romulans walking around the area, so the Team manuvered to where they wouldn't be seen as they entered the area.

"This place seems a little lacking in security, and I'm not picking up any sensors on the parameter." Lennox said quietly.

"Almost seemed a little too easy so far, Skipper." Ermey added.

Gunnery Sergeant Ermey was on point as the Marines approached the Romulan base. With everything clear, they small group walked out of the wooded area and into facility. They quickly blended in with a handful of other Romulans walking around, taking care of their duties.

Lennox paused and did a quick scan of the area, “No Human lifesigns, however there is a small cluster of building in the middle of this base that have damping fields active. It’s a good bet the Commander is there.”

Hurd nodded and directed Ermey to continue on.

A few minutes later, the Team approached the building and found area was much more secure than the rest of the facility. Two Romulans, a Sub-Lieutenant and a Centurion passed the group and approached the Security Checkpoint that kept unwanted people out of the inner area. Both presented identity papers and were granted access.

“At least it’s not a retina scanner.” Ermey said.

“Remember to stay calm and sure of yourselves. The identity papers we were given should get us through, even if we are scanned, the neural and DNA suppressant Doctor Brislan gave us should work.” Hurd reminded everyone.

They are straightened their uniforms, then walked toward the checkpoint. To their satisfaction, they were granted access and allowed to enter the area. The Romulan Security Officers took more time with them than they had with the two Romulans that went before, but no one was stopped or even searched.

Once through, they walked out of site of the checkpoint, “There’re three buildings. Maal and Duval check the eastern most, Ermey and I will check the center, and Lennox will check the western building. If the Commander isn’t there, collect any intel you can without being caught. Meet back here in thirty minutes. If you get into trouble, stay calm.” Hurd ordered.

Maal nodded then waited for Duval, they both then headed for the eastern building to check that one out.

Duvall nodded his head, clearly he understood his orders as he went off with Maal.

Lennox headed toward the building on the western side. He walked with a purpose, head up and shoulders back. He projected an air of arrogance with his walk...just like all the other Romulans he saw.

He approached the door and prepared to enter.

T'Lyn looked around keeping an eye on her surrounding, she didn't like this but kept looking normal, well as normal as any Romulan. She had a gut feeling about something but couldn't put her hand on it. But at the same time didn't let it come open so she wouldn't look suspicious.

Team 2

It had been almost ten minutes in which Phoenix's team made it to the hangar. Technically, they were outside the perimeter, watching the guard changes and the patrol pattern of the Romulan sentinel grunts.

The stand-by pilots were in the guard house, which was left of the flight tower. And the shuttles were out in the open, but had land locks on them. Phoenix knew how they were going to get the shuttle, and one of the Scorpions, but it would be very dependent on a flawless op.

"What we're gonna do," Phoenix spoke very quietly to Andrew and the others in her group, "Is walk through the main gate with our travel papers."

At this, she pointed to the rarely-used entrance gate that led officers to the shuttle lounge, below the tower. "They'll scan them, and we'll just act like and other... But if the papers fail to meet the standards promised to us, you'll want to be ready to use knives. No methods of violence that'll be heard."

Phoenix then scanned the watchtower once more time and nodded, "We got five minutes from the time we enter the building, to filter sleeping gas into their ventilation systems, and then we just wait for the good guys to call for us, and we man the communications systems here until we leave. Is everyone with me so far?"
