1,971 words; about a 10 minute read

Mission: Mission 83 - Recovery
Location: Security Conference Room - USS Lexington
Timeline: Concurrent with 'Additional Information'

ON:

Saith went to her quarters and reluctantly pulled out her old uniform. With queasy anticipation she slipped it on, it still fit fairly well, just a touch snug, but it would do if needed. She reflected that it should not be a surprise; she had been a teenager, but full grown when she had been rescued by the Federation, and she worked hard to maintain her physical prowess. She added the disruptor and hesitated at how good it actually felt to look and feel Rihan again. Before she spent too much time thinking about it, she left her quarters and headed for Security.

Once there, she logged into the terminal and anticipating Lokran’s orders, notified the recovery team to assemble in Security for their mission briefing. Lokran, Roebuck, and Saith were already in Security, so she hit her comm. Badge, “Ensign Brody, and Acting-Ensign K’Wor please report to Security for mission briefing.” She glanced at Lokran to see if he would react to her pre-emptive action. She picked up a padd and headed to the conference room.

R'nard nodded. "I wish you would have let me do that, but there is no harm done." he said.

Saith heard his words, but did not respond. Let them ride her exhaust for being proactive.

Roebuck was looking over the limited data they had regarding the Reman scientists and the facility. It was a small base over all, with the majority of space taken up by the drydock for the building of the new warship they planned install the Thalaron weapon on. Unfortunately, they didn’t have a schematic of the base’s interior…

Brody had been walking the corridors of the Lexington. It was a nervous habit, but kept him occupied when a mission was underway. He had been just two decks above the Security office when he heard Saith's summons over the comm. a short turbolift ride and he was outside of Security.

He entered the conference room and saw Lokran, Roebuck and Saith going over data files. He attempted to discern Saith's demeanor as she glanced up at him. It was only a couple hours earlier that they had had their dust up at SB400. Brody was certain it was water under the bridge. "Ensign Brody, reporting."

Roebuck looked up when Brody walked in, then he glanced over at Saith. He’d heard about their little run in back on the Station, and he hoped it wouldn’t follow them on the mission. If it did, and it risked the mission objective or lives, he made up his mind he’s stun them both himself.

Saith glanced up as Brody entered. She nodded in his direction to let him know there were no hard feelings. She was still fidgety but that was not anyone on the team's fault. It was all her own issues.

K’Wor had been in his Quarters, staring at the Romulan uniform. He didn’t have the same biased feelings many of the crew did. He grew up during the Dominion War, an era where the Romulans were more honorable than in times past. While he had been raised to not trust the Romulans, stories by his grandparents and others, his own personal experience had been different. Sure, he’d seen the Romulans act, well, Romulans, but he’d also seen some Humans act the same way…

Once he got the call to report to the Security Office, he picked up a PADD and left his Quarters. A few minutes later he arrived to find Ensign Baratan already in her Romulan uniform. Everyone else was in their usual Starfleet Uniform still. They still had a little more than a day before they arrived at their destination, maybe she was just trying to get used to the uniform again…

“Ensign K’Wor reporting.”

"Very good. Sit down, everybody. We will be going over what we will be doing. Of course, I don't look like a Rromulan, so I will be more covert in my operations. You will be there to convince the Remans to defect. It will be dangerous, but that is why I am along for this mission."

Saith would have smiled, except for the basic fact of their mission. "I thought the Remans wanted to be rescued." There was more than a little sarcasm in her voice. "If not, why are we going? Let the nasty Remans die." There, she had said it; now they all knew how she felt, at least a little bit.

Roebuck cut his eyes at Saith’s comment.

Brody interjected, knowing that Saith's hatred for the Remans ran deep and her feelings could not be changed an iota before the mission got underway. "We can debate the Romulan/Reman caste system all we want, but I think we need to plan our course of action. The fact remains that the Romulans are building a weapon capable of immeasurable destruction. Freeing the Remans, however unsettling that might be, will deal a crushing blow to the Romulan war effort and provide Starfleet with a significant tactical advantage once the Remans are debriefed."

K’Wor looked back at Baratan, then to Brody, he could feel the tension between the two. “I agree with Ensign Brody, Commander.”

Brody walked over to Commander Lokran and grinned. "Our chances of being discovered will likely be high, so it'll be nice to have our 'guardian angel' waiting in the shadows to quietly dispatch any would-be assailants."

It was not for nothing that his code name in Special Forces was "Shadow Demon." But none here were privy to that information. "Whatever you feel about the Rrremans is irrelvevant." R'nard said at last. "We have our orders to rretrieve them and destrroy the weapon the Rromulans have. You are all in Rrromulan uniforms, I will be in the shadows without a uniform at all. I work best that way unimpeded. None will see me, as I have been trrained. The rest here know their duty."

Saith raised an eyebrow. It was not lost on her that she was being asked to rescue the enemy and sabotage her own people at the same time. The question was, did she even care? Her own people did not care about her. It was something she would have to ponder at another point in time.

Saith needed to do very little to be ‘mistaken’ for Romulan. She gave a mirthless snicker and shook her head, rubbing her temples with her fingers. “If we are taken, I will pass for a Romulan." She continued to maintain she was Vulcan, even though everyone knew she wasn't.

"I may be killed, imprisoned, or let go depending on who we run into. Should we have a plan for such an eventuality? Or just assume we will get the job done with minimal fuss? The good news is that Rihannsu and Remans both tend to be minimalists. There will be very little to get in the way and not a lot of quarters, storerooms, and entertainment areas to get lost in. Extra room is not given to entertainment and sustenance as on a starship or starbase, it is used for security and weaponry. Should we lose our own weapons, or even if we get the chance it would be a good place to steal some from.”

Brody glanced at the mission chronometer displayed on the main viewer. Time to infiltration was ticking down slowly. A looming mission always provided plenty of anxious energy. He turned to Saith, looking very much the part in her Romulan uniform. "Do you have any idea as to what kind of
personnel we might encounter? We talking mostly engineers? Soldiers?
Officers?"

Saith thought a moment, then answered “I am not sure about Reman facilities, but if it was Rihan there would actually be mostly soldiers with just a few key engineers, not that it matters much.” She looked at each of them, “All Rihannsu, ALL Rihannsu,” she stressed, “and most Reman go through minimal training, at least they used to. I haven’t been there in over 10 years. Rihannsu begin mandatory military service at 13 for a minimum of 3 to 5 years. Rihannsu did not historically encourage weaponizing Remans. ”Still, Remans were not quite as militant, but they have similar survival expectations of their young, and their situation has changed."

“Commander. I know Captain K’Temoc’s team is assigned to sabotage whatever ship is being built to house the weapon, while we’re to get the Remans out and destroy anything related to the Thalaron Weapon they have in their R&D, but how are to do this without it raising suspicions?” K’Wor looked around a moment, then added, “I have an idea…we could borrow a Romulan shuttle, set its autopilot and rig it to emit Reman biosigns. If the Romulan destroy it, they’ll assume the Remans died aboard and not suspect they got away.”

K’Wor then looked around again. He’d gotten better about speaking his mind and expressing ideas, mostly thanks to his time on the Avenger and Captain Greenwood urging him along, but now this was his Department Head and fellow Security Department colleagues…maybe he should of just remained quiet…

Brody pondered K'Wor's suggestion. The young man seemed to have a knack for tactics. Brody crossed his arms, raised an eyebrow and turned to Lokran. "His plan is sound, Commander. It would explain the missing Remans and keep a pursuit party off our escape trail."

“The key word there is IF,” Saith interjected, “I do think it is a good plan, but it all hinges on IF. I am not sure that will suffice. First, the warbird would have to NOT try to contact them, then they would have to NOT try to beam them off the ship, and they would have to NOT try to take and board the ship. In any case, the more time they spent figuring it out would give us extra time to do our jobs and get away from the area. And so far, it is the best plan we have, there is bound to be at least one or two ships that can be commandeered, and I should be able to set it up easily enough. They can change systems, but it takes much more to change the language.”

Roebuck finally spoke up, “You’re right, there are a lot of ifs, and the only way we’ll know for sure is to plan ahead and be ready when we arrive.”

Brody knew Saith might very well be the key to the away team's success. "It looks like you're our ace in the hole, Saith. There's bound to be unforseen variables and we'll likely have to make changes to our plan on the fly. It may come down to you and your expertise to save our collective asses."

"We're still thirty-three hours out from Gamma Crateris, I suggest we start getting familiar with our Romulan gear." Roebuck said.

R'nard smiled. He had the best team for the job, though he was worried about Saith However he was convinced that this would be exactly what she needed. "Excellent ideas." he said. And worth implementing. We will need a shuttle and keep them guessing. As for me, as I said, it will be when I am not seen that they should worry. Get familiar with your gear. Saith, I will be depending on you. I think this will be the best for you, and I will be expecting you to be on your toes and pull this off for us."

K'Wor nodded, he was glad his idea wasn't shot down.

Roebuck nodded, "Commander." He left the Security and headed for his quarters to go over his Romulan equipment.

K'Wor followed Roebuck out and headed for his quarters as well.
