Mission:
Episode 120 - Guardian at the Gate
Location: USS Falcon, Mess Hall
Location: USS Falcon, Mess Hall
The senior staff of the Falcon had all gathered in the mess hall, right now there is a duty officer on shift it was now dinner time and Sarah wanted everybody together. Leia take this moment and decided to speak first. "Please notify your teams that they're doing amazing I know that these assignments can be mundane but what the bulk of the fleet gone we have to be vigilant and make sure that no one comes near 400."
"That is a good idea." Sarah nodded. She looked around at her crew, all sitting there as they gathered to eat. "I want you all to know that even though this may seem like just another patrol, boring and tedious, it is essential to keeping our people safe. We can't afford even one ship to get close to the station."
Suki had a big smile on her face, she really appreciated the messages from Leia and Sarah. "I am pretty new around here, but I can tell this is a good crew. You all are amazing."
"You fit right in with us." Aubrey replied with a warming smile. It was important that they all connect on some level so they knew how each other would react.
Sam spun his chair around from the helm, as he looked to the captain in the command chair. "Shall we Begin our next sector patrol?" He asked what the warm smile.
"Yes." Sarah said with a nod of her head. "Let's get onto the next one and see what's out there." She hoped it would just be routine.
Suki had a good feeling about this crew, typically she stayed on the station this is the first time she actually got to go out on an assignment. "Operations ready to go."
"Tactical's ready to go as well." Dustin called out with a big smile on his face. He was trying to remain positive even though they hadn't heard much from the fleet since they had left. Dealing with the Borg always put him on edge. Ever since frontiers day, the Borg scared them.
Dustin had heard of the Borg but until you actually experience them it's not something that you can easily describe. He hated the fact that so many people were affected by them without them even knowing just because of a silly transporter code that was added to their DNA without their permission.
Dustin was working through it, he knew other people had resigned and retired. Which seem to be starfleet's latest thing to do lately. Get into a tough situation in bail. He promised himself he wouldn't do that to Starfleet. Partially because the exploring him wasn't ready to give up the stars, I'm partially for the survivors that decided to remain in Starfleet.
"Engineering is ready." Aubrey spoke up. She was glad they were out doing something.
"Medical is set as well, Captain." Leland said from medical."
"Take us out on patrol, Lieutenant Carrington." Sarah ordered as she sat down in her chair. She hoped this one another routine patrol.
"Aye captain."Sam said as he smiled in her direction. The USS Falcon altered her course.
Location: USS Falcon, Mess Hall
Leia was sitting down when she noticed some young Lieutenant walking up towards her. "Lieutenant Miller, how can I help you?" Leia asked, and she looked over to Aubrey.
"I wondered if I could join you?" Aubrey said with a smile. She wanted to get to know her better.
"Please Aubrey, I hate eating alone. How are the engines holding up?" Leia ask that she took a sip from her drink, and then grabbed her for to get ready to scoop up a bite of food.
"They are great." Aubrey said as she sat down and smiled. "Happy as a clam, they are." She smiled to herself. Some would think that an odd statement, but engineers tended to think of their engines as alive.
"I'm glad you came down to stay with me because I want to talk about your career." Leia 32 explain to her. "You've been here for about 6 years now, I think you're more capable than a cheap engineer position I think you should seriously consider command track. I'm not trying to be pushy but I feel as your first officer that is my responsibility to at least address this topic with you. Trust me this whole crew is phenomenal and I hate to break you guys up because it'd be a selfish personal reasons to keep you guys together but as one of your direct commanding officers I feel it's my obligation to point out to you that you may not be living up here full potential." Leia said being a little direct.
Aubrey's eyes widened. "I never gave it a thought, honestly. I love being an engineer and it has been my focus for a long time." But now, with those words spoken, she felt a part of her stirring. Was command something she wanted?
"I can't force you into another command, but at this rate it could take you a few more years before you earn the lieutenant commander rank. I know you're capable of much more lieutenant. But I can't force you to take the command test. I could recommend you for the XO academy but it's up to you." Leia said to her, knowing that she didn't have to give an answer today she just wanted to plant the idea in her head.
"Honestly." Aubrey replied with a smile. "It wasn't in my scope of plans but now that the idea has been planted, I admit to being a little excited about the prospect."
"I understand Engineers fall in love with the engines as it ships, but even engineers deserve a promotion now and then." Leia said with the teasing voice. "You already married to Starfleet, and I'm not going to hurt you about children cuz I'm in the same boat I don't have any kids either but honestly if things work out between me and Jett, I can see us potentially having children in the near future."
Aubrey smiled. "I want children as well. Dustin and I haven't talked about when but children are in our future." She paused. "How many is the debate."
"Well how many do you want and how many does Dustin want?" Leia asked, she had no idea how many children either than wanted. But Aubrey would, and Aubrey would know that Dustin would want three kids.
"Dustin wants three." Aubrey said with a smile. "I lean more towards four or five." She was willing to settle for three though if it was that important to him.
"Five kids, is a lot. One of my previous had 7 kids. Even though I don't have any children, I can say from previous the more you have the easier it is to raise them." Leia suggested with a big grin.
"I come from a large family." Aubrey said with a smile. "It's like your own village."
"Someone did her research on me." Leia said with a warm smile on her face. "There's nothing like living in a small town or a village, I hate these big cities. Be on the space stations like being on a big city. That's why I really prefer my time on the Falcon." Leia suggested to her. Persimio is used to big cities but the host was not.
"We are alike in that repect." Aubrey said with a grin. "I do not like large crowds or being the center of fanfare. I do my job well and like to keep myself in a group of friends I call family." Her eyes met Leia's. "You are now one of them."
"Oh you'll be there soon enough." Leia said with a big teasing grin on her face.
"I'm certain you are right." Aubrey grinned in return. "I think I'm partially excited and scared at the same time."
"Honestly I was too at first but now being in this position I can tell you from personal experience that your feelings are justified but it is going to be such a rewarding position for you." Leia suggested to her.
Aubrey smiled. "It's weird how I never thought of going for a higher position and now I'm really looking forward to it."
"Okay I'll talk to you Captain Rodgers and we'll recommend you actually I think we'll be recommending most of the senior staff. It would be ashamed to Starfleet to keep you guys here and stagnate your careers." Leia said to her, with the tone of sincerity in her voice.
"Thank you!" Aubrey said sincerely. "I believe you will be very popular among us all. We've all grown used to being here and our positions. I think we needed this push."
"Anytime Lieutenant, your capable of so much more." Leia said as the scene starts to fade away.
Aubrey thought about her words and knew she was right. She had started out with great amibitions but she fell into the trap of loving being an engineer so much. She realized that she wanted thisand was surprised it took someone else for her to see it. She vowed to look foward and to aspire for much more in the days to come.
