709 words; about a 4 minute read

Mission: Episode 120 - Guardian at the Gate
Location: USS Essex
Timeline: Current

Deela was sitting in her chair on the bridge when she was interrupted in her thoughts, "Admiral T'Lar, you have a communique from your daughter."

"Okay, thanks. I'll take it in my ready room." She got up and nodded to her XO, Adriana." She entered and sat down, "Raivyn? Is something wrong?"

Raivyn shrugged, "Maybe. I don't know. Alex's husband is going on a mission with his brother. Alex doesn't look so happy. But that's not why I wanted to talk to you. I just wanted to make sure you made it and find out if it's dangerous."

Deela nodded, "I see. Well, as you can tell, I made it. So far, the Borg haven't been a problem. As for being dangerous, dealing with the Borg can be dangerous. But I don't think the Borg queen has any ill will towards us. But, as you know, that could change."

"I was just worried. I wish I could go with you sometimes instead of being stuck here. And now that Brandon is gone, you are the only one left."

"I know it's hard. But this is what I signed up for. Look, maybe next time, if it isn't a dangerous mission, you can come. But, that is a big maybe."

Raivyn smiled, "Okay. I understand."

"Good. I love you bunches."

"I love you bunches too." Raivyn gestured an air hug.

"Is Alex there with you?" Deela needed to vent to someone.

"Yes, she right here." Alex replaced Raivyn's face, "I'm here."

Deela took a deep breath and then exhaled. Her voice sounded very angry, something she hadn't seen in a long time, "So,"Admiral Bremer insists on going into the conduit to search for the Gladiator. He’s indispensable—we can’t afford to lose him. And I’m not ready to bear the weight of running Starbase 400 alone. I belong as his second-in-command... and I want to keep it that way."

Alex sighed, "You know Bremer. Once he makes up his mind, that's it. You could argue with him but I doubt he'd listen. He can be bullheaded at times."

"That is so true. That's what pisses me off at him. Now I'm going to be left dealing with the new Borg queen. I still don't trust her as far as I can throw her as the saying goes." She took another cleansing breath, "I don't like being angry like this."

Alex nodded, "I hate seeing you like this too. You're still not used to it, are you?"

Deela shook her head, "Not really." Deela was already uncomfortable with the mission at hand and now Bremer was going on this mission. As she started to calm down, she could sense something from Alex but wasn't sure what it was, "So, what is going on with your Lee?"

"Oh that. Apparently, Jack needs him to help on some mission. I don't know exactly what but he's going to be gone for a while. So, I'm left with the kids to take care of them by myself."

"And now, you also have to take care of my daughter. I'm so sorry to put that on you."

"No, no. She's fine. In fact, she's been a great help with the twins. I'm actually grateful to have her here." Alex smiled, "We'll be fine. I'm more worried about you right now. This thing with the Borg can be nerve wracking."

Deela nodded in agreement, "It is. We really don't know if she has some diabolical plan or if she's being truthful with us. I haven't dealt with the Borg for years. She's a new breed, she is."

"Well, do your best. You are really good at reading people. I think you'll be fine. And Bremer knows what he's doing."

"Thank you. I will see you all when I get back. Bye for now."

The chime went off. Alex knew that her duties were just beginning, "Bye. Take care. We'll be fine." The screen went black.

Deela walked out of the ready room, "Admiral, that queen Borg wants to board our ship."

Deela sighed again, "Alright. Make her wait a little longer. I don't want her on my ship but it looks like we may have to anyway. I need time to think."
