Mission:
Episode 120 - Guardian at the Gate
Location: USS Essex, Bridge
Timeline: Current
ON:
Deela sat in her chair with her XO, Lt. Monroe-Wayne, sitting next to her. They were waiting for Admiral Bremer to let her know what the plan of action was. Deela never gets nervous but she was uneasy as she watched the Borg ships in close proximity of the Essex and the others. Deela sighed.
"What is taking so long?" She looked over at Ariana, "I feel like a sitting duck here. I don't trust the Borg as far as I can throw them."
Ariana gave Deela an understanding nod of her head. “Well I’m sure you’re sensing what I’m sensing, and so far nothing seems off. I guess we wait and see what Admiral Bremer’s orders are.”
Dee sat at her seat at the back of the bridge, she had it turned to face the view screen. The current image filled her with dread. Having just learnt of her pregnancy, on a ship surrounded by the Borg, the most dangerous enemy of the Federation, this was the last place she wanted to be. But, as a Starfleet officer, she had to keep it together, set an example etc. she sat, her gaze fixed on the view screen, her right hand resting gently on her, at least for now, flat stomach.
Ariana stood up from her seat, she was only too aware of the feelings of everyone onboard, but she was sensing Dee more strongly. Walking around the bridge she offered smiles here and there trying to ease tensions, pausing by Dee. “How are you doing? Try not to stress, I think if the Borg wanted us they’d have let us know by now.”
She sighed. "I know. But, I can't help it. I have calmed down somewhat since I found out about my baby but being here, in this dangerous situation and not back in the relative safety of the station with Jaxon, is not helping. "
“I understand, I really do” Ariana offered an understanding smile. “I’ve been through it twice already, and no doubt I will again.” She gave Dee a wry smile. “I promise I won’t let anything happen to you, or your baby.”
Deela's mind was going a mile a minute, thinking about the scenarios of what might happen. She hoped that Bremer wasn't going to look for the Gladiator himself. Her feelings are that Bremer isn't expendable so he should send someone else. If she found out that he was planning it, she was going to fight him on it. Then she thought about the Borg queen. What if all this was some kind of ruse to lure ship's into the conduit? Was there a sinister plan to end them? All logic left her as she thought of more scenarios. Her Vulcan father would be disappointed in her if he saw the state she was in. Deela sighed as she tried to calm her mind down.
“Not you too?” Ariana offered a warm smile as she walked around to Deela. “If there’s one thing I’ve come to understand it’s that whatever is going to happen, will happen, it’s how we deal with it that matters. Right now I’m not sensing a threat, if that changes we’ll both feel it.”
"I'm glad you're not. I am sensing so many nerves from some of the crew. They are anxious dealing with them. I think I'm just being overwhelmed by the crew's emotions and my own hatred of the Borg." She thought about it for a moment, "I have an idea how to alleviate their fears.
Deela got on the comms, "Attention, Essex crew. This is your Captain speaking. I understand that facing the Borg is unsettling, and I share your concerns. Rest assured, our priority is your safety. If there is any sign of hostility from the Borg, we will withdraw immediately. Thank you for your service."
Deela waited for a moment, then smiled at Ariana, "I think that helped."
Ariana nodded. “I think so too.” She looked around the bridge crew giving Dee a smile as she did so.
Dee smiled back at Ariana. So long as her friend was with her, things felt somewhat better.
Deela walked over to Dee, "Look, I haven't forgotten about you. I know you are struggling with the safety of this baby and this mission. I mean what I said to the crew. Any sign of danger, we pull out. No ifs, ands or buts."
"Thank you Admiral but please don't jeopardize the mission on my account. I hope Jaxon is ok back on Starbase 400, knowing I'm out here in the presence of the Borg."
"I won't, believe me. As for Jaxon, he knows this is part of what we signed up for. He'll be fine. Hopefully, we'll hear from Admiral Bremer." She addressed the bridge crew, "But for now, let's keep our eyes on the Borg." Deela went back to her seat to wait.
