Hugh looked over the information in the screen in front of him again, and nodded grimly. He looked across the table to Petty Officer Rollins, and gave the woman a grim nod. "Okay, I think you have enough here to file charges against Mr. Grisham." He took a deep breath, and leaned back in his chair. "I can't say this is going to be easy on you. Sexual harassment charges run into the usual 'he said she said' bull. But, if what you presented me on your report is true, Petty Officer Grisham is the kind of slime ball to get himself caught real quick."
"So.." Petty Officer Betty Rollins cleared her throat. "What next?"
"The usual thing to do is alert your officer in charge. That would be Lieutenant Gillo. I'll talk with her on actions we can take. If she feels this should be escalated, then it'll shoot on up to the station executive officer. Either can give him non judicial punishment. If he declines, or either Lieutenant Gillo or the XO think it's an extreme enough case, it'll be handed over to the JAG." Hugh leaned forward, looking into Betty Rollins eyes. "This can be some pretty heavy stuff. I've got your back, and I think Lieutenant Gillo the same. No one should have to go through this, and it's a shame that even today we see cases like this come up all too often."
Petty Officer Rollins nodded. She was a beautiful woman in her mid-twenties. Her curly blond hair and blue eyes made her very easy to look at, and even Hugh had to hide the slight blush on his face when she walked in. Behind the stunning good look, though, was a woman dedicated to her duty. She served as a training program coordinator, making sure holo-deck training simulations were in order, as well as working on rosters for personnel who were up for certain certifications. She did her job very well, as her record reported nothing but good things from her past superior officers.
She had a problem, however. That problem was Petty Officer First Class Grisham, her superior. Grisham was about the opposite of Rollins. He had been busted twice before for insubordination. The last incident almost got him kicked out of Starfleet. Had it not been for the series of Borg assaults that rocked the Federation he would have been drummed out long ago. But Starfleet, even today, needed every possible person in uniform. That meant men like Grisham were given another-or in his case a third-chance. He was a lazy drunk who's only redeeming quality was that he had been in his job long enough to be at least antiquate enough.
According to Rollins, Grisham had been hounding her for weeks. His advances were at first charming. After rejecting him time and time again, Grisham started to get more physical, once even trapping Rollins in a holo deck and demanding a chance to prove himself to her. He also forced his way into her quarters, giving her the sorry excuse that he was doing a room inspection. The last straw to Rollins was when Grisham got into a fist fight with a man Rollins had started dating. The young man, a security crewman named Vaun, beat the crap out of Grisham. As usual, the fight between the two enlisted men was hushed up, as neither wanted the sort of trouble fisticuffs would bring.
But Rollins had enough.
And O'Reily was going to take care of the problem one way or another, before Grisham got even more out of line than he already had.
"For now, I want you to take some time off. I'll alert Lieutenant Gillo of the situation, and insist you get a transfer aboard a vessel or at the very least another section of the Starbase away from Grisham." Hugh crossed his arms, his eyes narrowing. "And next time, miss, report this kind of trash to me with a little more haste."
"Oh," this time she blushed, "Sorry Chief. Yes, of course."
"That's all, Rollins. Get out of here, and stay away from your work duties until we get back to you. Understood?"
"Yes Chief. Thank you."
"Dismissed."
When the young woman left, Hugh stood up, and looked out of his porthole. Soon, he would have to venture aboard the Yorktown, and into the fray. Part of him wondered if he should have requested to stay. He knew Janice needed him, as did his boys and girls. He chuckled as he walked over to his desk. He had inherited more children, like Rollins, to his family. It was his job to look after them too.
"Chief O'Reily to Lt. Gillo. Do you have a minute?"
