Mission:
Mission 78 - Colonial Uprising
Location: Ops/USS Endeavor
On:
Commander Coleman was working on the USS Endeavor's main sensor array from Ops. After the last mission, it took a beating and he wanted to make sure that nothing went wrong with it. He tried to fix it himself, but with his limited knowledge of engineering and operations, he thought he'd get someone better qualified then himself.
So, he called up the computer and asked where Lt. Gillo was and it lead him to the operations station in ops. He walked over and introduced himself to the new officer.
He walked up and smiled before said, "Lt. Gillo? I'm Commander Coleman, the Chief of Sciences aboard the station and I was hoping you'd be able to help me with something."
She heard the boot fall and the lift doors before the voice and looked up to see the scientist that she saw before making his way onto the operations deck. Just paying it no mind she went back to work wondering what he was up to but really not going to go up to him and prob him for the answers. Going back to working on the panel that held operations on it she got engrossed in it and nearly jumped at hearing him talk to her so close. Looking up from her panel she smiled at him and pressed a few buttons before responding to him making no indication that he just about scared the poo out of her, "Nice to meet you Commander. Is there something I can do for you?"
He smiled and said, "Yeah, I was wondering if you could help me fix something on the Starship Endeavor? I know that Commander Smith is busy working on something for the Admiral, so I thought I'd come and ask our wonderful chief of operations if you could help."
"Sure I can help but there is no need to flatter me to get my attention." She could tell that he was wanting to tell her what was going on right away so quieted to listen to him speak some more.
After a moment, he took a breath and continued. "The Endeavor's sensor array way damanged or something. The imaging systems seem to be out of alignment and I'm not good at fixing these kinds of things and I was wondering if you'd be able to help out?"
"I think I should be able to. Before I was on the starbase operations I was operations on a starship so considering Endevor is a pretty common class of starship I should be able to take a look at her bowls to see what relay got burnt out at what intersection so you can either repair with me or get the parts to repair from the depot."
He smiled an said, "I guess I'm going to learn a little something today after all. When would you be able to take a look at the Endeavor? I know you're probably busy with getting everyone sent out today."
"The station can handle it pretty well, and I'm sure the assistant operations officer is more than capable of locking down and releasing when ships ask for launch. Besides, it sounds like you are pretty anxious to get down to the problem that is going on with the Endeavor." It was with that she logged out of the panel. "Or you wouldn't have come over here and asked for help if you were content to wait on it."
"Well, the Endeavor is the Station's Science ship, so when the sensors go crazy, I tend to be a little anxious to get it fixed up, so that she can go out and do what she does best." He smiled and walked besides Gillo as they headed towards the turbolift to head down to the Docking Port where the Endeavor was currently waiting. He took a deep breathe before continuing.
"Plus, I know we have another mission that is underway and lord knows what might come up to where the Endeavor is needed, only to find that we can't help. I can hear the Admiral now." He let out a little laugh, trying to joke as they headed to work on the Endeavor.
"I could imagine the colorful way he would have of expressing himself knowing full out well that one of his top ships is out of the combat loop because of an operations issue. Especially since he knows he has one of the best operations officers in his hand now." She then giggled a little bit realizing that he was not only joking but that she was sounding like she was bragging. "Sorry, didn't mean for that to come out like that, and I understand the joke too."
He laughed too before saying, "Don't worry, you are one of the best in the fleet from what I hear. Glad to have you onboard with us." The turbolift stopped right outside Docking Port 11, where the Endeavor was currently stationed and they stood outside while Coleman put in the security code to let them in. Once inside they headed upto the Bridge of the tiny Nova-Class vessel. Coleman said, "Welcome aboard. Sorry that it's not as big as the Pegasus or Avenger bridge. You might want to watch your head." He laughed a little before leading Gillo over to the Ops console and started showing the problem with the Sensors.
She smiled as she followed him onto the bridge, "I actually prefer the smaller ships because their issues tend not to be buried under another system. So let's see what is troubling your lady and see if we can't fix it." Walking over to operations with him she booted it up to see what the current rest readings were and where everything was at as far as power flow. She knew what the established average was for standard Nova. "Is there any re-fits or anything that has had to be done since you took her out of the bone yard and started running her? I need to know what exactly I'm looking at here. If she's a normal one or if she's suppose to run hot in one area on normal and cold in another.
He thought for a minute and said, "I think the only refit that the Endeavor has had on it was when we first brought her out of the boneyard. I think it was the 2381 refit, just enough to bring her up-to-date. But, besides that, there has been no other refit as far as I know. Plus, I know they have the newer Luna-Class starships, so it's harder to find people who will fix up these good ol' Nova-Class starships anymore." He let out a little laugh again before saying, "Ever worked on a Nova-class ship before?"
She shook her head with a bit of a smile, "No, at least not that I can admit to openly. The operations systems though are pretty straight forward as to what I'm reading while the ship is at rest. There might be a technical issue with one of the components where it is loose or actually worn out. I can't tell you. " She then pointed to the read out, "All I can tell you is this is your ship at rest and this..." she then points to another set of read outs right next to it, "this is a Nova standard reading when the ship is at rest in the same situation. You can see the readings differ and that bypassing won't do anything to change it so the issue is in one of the mains. So, what would you like to do about it?"
He sat and thought for a moment before saying, "Well, I'll probably have to get a new part for the Sensor array no matter what, so I'll more in likely have to talk to the Quartermaster about getting it. How long do you think it'll take to get the part for the Array? Do you have any suggestions on any upgrades that might be important for the ship too?"
"Depends on if Quartermaster has to send out for it or not. If it is in house maybe less then a day. If it is out of house well have to see where the nearest depot is that has it and go from there. Quartermaster should be able to give you a time table. As for the whole upgrades... if you have had the re-fit and the engineering staff hasn't seen anything really to improve on it then go for it. I tend to listen to the engineers when it comes to the hardware of the ship. The way the Nova was designed was compact to begin with so adding anything really won't do any good besides slow the ship response time down. Then again this is coming from someone who hasn't worked on one since graduation from the academy." She then sighed, "And that is much longer than what I want to admit." Smiling a bit she then turned to look at him, "I know you're concerned about the ship but once the part comes in and is tested in dock you should be back up to normal operations."
He smiled and said, "Thanks. I just have a feeling we've got quite a bit ahead of us in this mission. Well, I thank you for your help and I won't keep you any longer than needed. I know you're probably a busy woman. I'll send in the request to the Quartermaster as soon as possible, to see if they have the part." He turned and gave a cheeky grin before saying, "Thanks again for the help."
"You're welcome and despite the roomers I'm not at all too busy to help a Captain get his ship back up to specs. The stations Quartermaster will be informed that getting the Nova part necessary to get your systems back up will be a priority job. I'll also be talking to a friend of mine in the bone yard close by to pick up the part if it is in close to new condition if he can. If not then we'll have to wait for Sol sector to respond to it." She sighed, "Rather not do that." She then smiled just a bit, "Just call again if you need anything else. I'll see you in station operations soon, and don't wear the carpet down on the bridge pacing too much...sir." It was with that she departed back to station ops. with the old Earth expression running in her head 'when it rains it pours'.
Coleman laughed and sent the request to the Quartermaster for the part to fix the Endeavor. Once it was sent, he headed back onto the Starbase. He went and worked on some more of the Star Charts for the mission that was underway. He was greatful for all the help that he had gotten and was glad to have such a wonderful crew to work with and with that thought, he smiled.
