Mission: Episode 106 – Stalemate
Location: Doctor Corrigan’s Office
Timeline: MD4 1800

Pushing away the almost untouched dinner, Doctor Corrigan offered a resigned sigh as she reached for her comm badge and asked Ariana to stop by when she was available. It had already been a long day, most of it passing in a blur aside from a few eventful moments. And then there was this...

On her desk, front and centre, an official complaint.

Three times she had read it through, groaning when she zeroed in on the cause. Dr Robert Mendez. Her eyes narrowed in disbelief at the number of names co-signing the complaint.

Just perfect.

When the door chime rang out she glanced up, offering a grateful smile, “sorry to ruin your evening. I need to ask a favour. Not tonight, but definitely tomorrow if possible.”

“Of course” Ariana smiled as she made her way over to the nearest chair and sat down. “What can I do?”

“I need a psych evaluation,” she said reluctantly. “Not me personally- Doctor Mendez. Obviously confidential but a lot of the staff are raising concerns about his behaviour.”

Ariana nodded. “I see” she nodded to the PADD in front of Carolyn. “Is that anything to do with this request? May I see it?”

“He has always had visions of himself as some sort of Romeo but I think he’s played the field a little too much.” She slid the report towards her, “confidentially of course. Hades might kill him. Personally I think maybe he’s trying to distract himself.”

“Ahh I see” Ariana took the PADD and skimmed through the list of complaints that Carolyn had received. “I see what you mean” She passed the PADD back. “So tell me more about Mendez, he’s not a Doctor I’ve had much in the way of contact with.”

“A better than average surgeon,” Carolyn conceded, “he was already on the staff when I joined the crew. Played the field. A lot. Unfortunately he can’t seem to find his Juliet - which is the problem. His complicated love life is starting to affect the department. Before Hades puts him out an airlock it seems fair to make sure something else isn’t going on.”

Ariana nodded. “Okay that’s fine. If you hold off on presenting these complaints until I’ve spoken with Mendez in the morning that would be good.”

“Thank you. I also have another situation. Kaden Ross.”

Ariana paused. “Okay, what’s happened with Kaden?”

“I’m concerned,” Carolyn said, not wishing to betray his confidence. “He came by my quarters earlier and I don’t think I helped at all.”

“Was it to do with thoughts on his future by any chance?” Ariana looked at Carolyn curiously. “We’ve been having a rocky relationship of late, we even went to see Rol to talk it out. I’m not sure it even helped solve anything, just make it more complicated.”

Carolyn flashed Ariana a sympathetic smile, “sounds like you have your hands full. But talking to Rol... that’s good. Whenever I suggest it, Kaden is ... reluctant, to try. I want him to recover fully and his body is healing, aside from a little minor setback today. But it isn’t just his body that needs to heal. I’ve already told him what happened to me a few years ago - well that I was hurt and had to endure the same type of physio he is going through now. But our situations were so so different.

I guess I don’t know the right thing to say and I don’t want to say the wrong thing and set Kaden’s recovery back.”

“I wouldn’t worry too much, Kaden has his own unofficial counsellor...Freya!” Ariana smiled. “She used to be his counsellor until it was deemed a conflict of interest. He’s been my patient ever since. What he doesn’t talk about with me, I’ve no doubt he does with her. I’ll talk to them both separately and see what I can do.”

“As long as he’s talking with someone,” Carolyn said, mollified before she sighed, “it probably didn’t help that I practically threw him out my quarters. Not literally of course as I’d never move him an inch...”

Ariana grinned. “He is very well built, one of the reasons why I fell in love with him many years ago.” She smiled as she thought about it. “Freya’s done him the world of good, I’m happy for them both.”

“Thanks for doing all of this,” Carolyn said after a moment, resisting the urge to just unleash everything else on her mind. “Especially Mendez. Hopefully it will help talking with you.”

“Hopefully so” Ariana smiled warmly. “In the meantime what else is on your mind? I know you well enough by now to know there’s something.”

“It’s fine,” Carolyn told her, “if you can help with the Mendez situation it will be one less headache.”

“Are you sure?” Ariana looked at her friend. “If there’s anything you need to talk about we can talk. As for Mendez, I’m happy to help.”

“I’m sure,” she nodded. “No... I’m really not. I don’t know ... maybe I’m just tired.”

Ariana nodded. “Being pregnant will do that to you. Get some rest and if you still feel off come and find me.”

“Okay,” she agreed absently, her mind already turning to the waiting reports.

“I’ll leave you to get some rest.” Ariana smiled.

"Night," Carolyn called after her. When she was alone she sighed, reaching for the next report and hoping Rol took her advice to rest.
