"I must say," Kitty O'Shea confided in a whisper as she took her first bite, sounding as if she were confessing to a crime, "it is a nice change to have someone cook for me. And it is rather good. I would have added a touch more pepper... so, yes, where was I?"
From the opposite side of the table, Doctor Corrigan grinned. "You were talking about Jimmy," she reminded the woman as she ate. Breakfast with Kitty had become a regular event. They would meet aboard SB23, trying out different places to eat with varying degrees of success. Today it seemed was a success.
Kitty nodded, remembering now. "Ah yes. Jimmy. He eventually messaged me back. Five days! Turns out that he and some of his old school friends went on a pub crawl around Dublin. Two days solid. He only just woke up - In Cork! He doesn't even know anyone in Cork! Honestly, acting like they are all teenagers again."
Carolyn smiled, trying not to laugh. For while she was clearly aiming for an annoyed, irritated tone of voice when she spoke of her husband, she sounded entirely affectionate. As always. "Perhaps you should have gone with him after all."
"Oh, it would've been grand to see Liam and the wee baby," Kitty admitted, "but as soon as we can, I want to get back. See what - if anything - is left. I left so much behind."
Carolyn squeezed her hand, "I'm sure the Admiral will have us back as soon as he can."
Kitty nodded, "oh, I'm sure. And by then, Jimmy just might have gotten over his hangover."
"Don't be hoping for miracles now," Carolyn teased as she went back to her meal. It was good.
"Still no change with your other situation, I take it?" Kitty asked offhand, taking another bite. She peered across at her breakfast companion, arching an eyebrow as she waited for a response. While she knew she did not know the entire story, she had listened to what could be said, reading between the lines for others. It was a skill she had honed to perfection.
Carolyn sighed. "No. And I don't know how, of if I want to, try and fix it."
"Of course you do, dear," Kitty commented with a knowing smile. "I have faith."
Carolyn raised an eyebrow, "you told me you haven't been to church for sixteen years -"
"Faith in the universe!" Kitty clarified with a bright smile.
"Oh, well if the universe says so," Carolyn commented, rolling her eyes.
"Men," Kitty confided in a low voice, "can sometimes be complicated creatures. Your Dr Hades especially so. From what you have told me, which I know is not everything, his intentions, his hopes, were to make things better. Did he do it in the wrong way? Oh, absolutely. And you are entitled to how it made you feel. And he too, is entitled to how it made him feel."
She shifted tack, "where did you request a transfer to this time?"
"Denobula," she shrugged as she took a bite. "I'm working my way through the alphabet."
Kitty chuckled, "well, it has worked well so far."
"Quite," she sighed, stabbing her food with her fork and taking a bite. "I don't think he even reads them."
"I think the fact he denies them says a lot," Kitty observed. "Maybe more than he is willing or able to say himself."
"He doesn't say anything much," Carolyn pointed out. "He does shout. A lot."
