Episode 106 – Stalemate

A good deed never goes unpunished... or was that unrewarded?
Reaching the clearning, with the small shuttle now in site, she had no idea why that old saying came to mind. Breathing hard, her vision blurred, one bloodstained hand rested against the nearby tree for support as the nineteen year old summoned the last of her strength to keep going. One foot in front of the other.
The golden rules ringing in her ears.
Don't get caught. Don't get dead.
She was almost two for two. The sound of approaching footsteps made her head snap up, her heart racing. The security guards were not even trying to be quiet, shouting out to one another. Which made her worry more about the ones who were being quiet. Because that place had more security than she had ever seen, all to protect one computer which was diligently kept off of the main network.
A computer they were meant to hack and then get out without anyone being aware they had even been there.
As she drew nearer the hatch opened and Jared stood there, his old weather beaten face unreadable as he urged her forward. When she was close enough he all but threw her inside as a few phaser blasts cut through the air, scorching the bulkhead. Cursing under his breath, the old man sealed the hatch, saying nothing as he moved to the front of the ship, raising shields and executing their escape course.
Satisfied they were not being followed or in immediate danger he went back, kneeling on the deck as he propped open a medical kit, the broken lid threatening to break off and the contents dishearteningly sparse. He maybe had enough to treat a really bad headache. "Kai?"
Lying on her back, staring up at the ceiling, Skye gave one quick shake of her head. She winced as Jared moved her hand and then the torn fabric of her top aside to inspect the wound, biting down her lip to avoid crying out. It was her own fault for going back, for trying to help him. He made the mistake of being caught but she... she made a bigger mistake in going back. She could still hear Jared's cursing in her ear from the comms.
"I'll kill Ryek," Jared vowed under his breath as put pressure on the wound. "Don't you worry kiddo. We are heading for that ship you told me about, that Klingon... what was his name?"
"Korel," she breathed through another wave of pain. She shivered, coldness seeping into her bones. "And Kit-"
As Jared put more pressure on it she did cry out, agony tearing through her. Jared looked at her, "sorry kid but I gotta try to stop the bleeding much as I can. You just keep talking to old Jared and we'll get to that ship before you know it. Maybe he even has an EMH. I had to sell my emitters."
"Next time you need some help," Skye murmured, eyes growing heavy, "maybe don't call me..."
