Episode 104 - A Glimmer of Hope...
Location: Starbase 400
Timeline: MD2 -0815hrs
ON:
It had been about ten hours since the battle for RDB8 and over six hours since the fleet arrived back at Starbase 400.
Bremer, K’Temoc, K’Wor, and MacLeod had just spent over an hour in a holosuite working out. They had ran two kilometers, then went through a callisthenic program, before working on hand-to-hand combat, and then finally close quarters combat with bladed weapons.
With most of SB400’s systems back online and most of the damage repaired from the attack that started the war, they beamed up to Ops and headed for Bremer’s office. While they trained, they had the idea of attacking Cha’Di Station next. It was closest to SB400, on the edge of the Triangle in Romulan space. The Typhon Pact attack on the Klingons came from there, as did the initial attack on Starbase 400. They wanted to get some thoughts out and look over updated intel from the area. They also wanted to eliminate that base before it could be used to attack SB400 again.
Entering Bremer’s office they were unexpectedly met by three Romulans. The one in the middle was Admiral Vernar, one of the Romulan Republic’s most experienced combat commanders. The two on either side of him both had calm blank looks on their faces as they stood with their hands together in an almost Vulcan manor.
"Fleet Admiral, I need to speak with you. These are, friends of mine, members of the Qowat Milat."
“How did you get in here?” K’Wor asked bluntly.
“Where were your ships Admiral?” Bremer asked, coldly. “You were supposed to provide a wing of warbirds to assist attack on RDB8, but those ships never showed up.”
“There were, complications.” Vernar replied.
“That’s no damn excuse! You people are becoming more and more unhelpful in this war, a war that came to pass primarily because we allowed refugees into Federation space." Bremer started.
K'Temoc and MacLeod glanced at each other, not sure where the hate in Mike's voice was coming from. K'Wor however had an idea.
"Distrust of Romulans, ALL Romulans is growing again within the Federation, many demanding the Republic’s expulsion. We fought to get you here, you could at least help us fight to keep you!” Bremer’s tone was filled with anger.
“Calm yourself Admiral and speak with respect.” One of the Romulans said.
The other Romulan then added, “Choose your next words very carefully.”
Mike glared at the Romulans for a moment, “If it’s a fight you want...”
One of the Romulans cut Mike off, “It’s one you will not win.”
Mike's nose flared as his anger shown on his face. He made the slightest move with his right hand...
Both Romulans drew swords from behind there backs and slashed, however they were surprised when their blades clanged against the metal of K’Temoc’s mek’leth and MacLeod’s Katana. Neither Bremer nor Vernar moved or blinked. K’Wor, standing behind his father also readied his bat’leth.
After a moment Vernar held up his hand. His two body guards recovered their weapons and stepped back, still holding their swords but in a relaxed manner behind their backs. K’Temoc and MacLeod then also relaxed their stance.
“Vaun'gan was attacked by a Star Empire fleet. They destroyed Republic Fleet Yards and our Starbase. They also fired on the colony and killed many civilians. Both fleets fought to near mutual destruction. Only a handful of old Birds of Prey survived from our defending force. We’ve ordered our ships that were assisting in the Alpha Quadrant back to defend our populace. The warbirds that were designated to assist your fleet were also recalled to protect our planet. We lost thousands of lives.” Vernar explained.
K’Temoc, MacLeod, and K’Wor all further relaxed. Mike however still didn’t move or take his eyes off the Romulans. “We’ve lost lives too, the death toll for this war is in the millions. My wife among them. And right now, I’m in no mood for excuses.”
“You were once one of our biggest proponents and did more to help bring our people to a new home than anyone except for Jean-Luc Picard. He gave up on us, now you’ve given up too.” Vernar replied. He looked defeated, mentally and spiritually.
“You people killed my wife.” Mike said as his eyes turned red.
“WE did not. She gave her life for ours and for yours fighting our mutual enemy. Now, in her death, it appears we’ll soon be enemies too.” Vernar paused, then added, “My ships, all forty-seven, will be ready to assist during the next Alliance offensive.” He tapped his communicator and the three Romulans were beamed back to his ship.
"When did Romulans start carrying swords?" MacLeod asked.
"Where those woman?" K'Wor asked.
Mike didn’t move for a moment, just taking a deep breath. He then glanced back at his officers, “Dismissed.” He didn’t turn to see them leave, he walked into his office’s back room to shower and change into uniform.
