Episode 100 - A Hatred of Atonement
Location: Surgical suite
Timeline: MD2 1445 hours

“... didn’t know Hades was planning on scrubbing in,” Doctor Mendez commented as he glanced up from the patient file he was reading. Taking a bite out of his apple he watched Hades approach the changing area, the surgeon’s normal calm and confident swagger disappearing at the expression on Hades face. He frowned, trying to recall if any cadets had cried in his presence lately.
From the other side of the room, Doctor Corrigan closed over her locker with a resigned sigh as she peered around the corner.
“Don’t worry, just go practice something nice to say at my memorial service,” she murmured as Hades entered the room just inside the entrance to the surgical suites. “Go finish prepping the first patient, you take lead.”
Grateful for the excuse, Mendez squeezes past Hades to get out of the room, doing his best to avoid eye contact.
Leaning against the set of storage lockers nearest the door Carolyn frowned, “should I just walk myself into the airlock and save you the trouble?”
His calm voice was only betrayed by his red face. "Why was Splendora not in her room. I was told that you submitted the discharge PADD." He was not in a good mood. After his talk with Kalani, his talk with Rol, his talk with Michael and Isaiah and finally Braxton he was in no mood. He'd just heard that Carolyn had submitted documents for release of Splendora. He didn't read the PADD he went to the source.
“Technically, yes,” Carolyn admitted as she pushed away from the lockers, wincing as her shoulder registered its complaint. “I did.”
"And why did you do that." He tried to keep his cool.
While she knew he would be - at best - angry and had in her head ran through many versions of the conversation without getting angry herself, she knew that was not going to happen. “Firstly, she discharged herself,” Carolyn snapped before she could stop herself, “against advice and knowing you would be like this. What should I have done?! Tied her down when she is bending metal with her bare hands? Illegally hold her?
She had a visitor- a Klingon. She said you’d understand and it was a blood oath and she would be back for her tests tonight. I’ll make sure Harris is here to do them.”
Hades sighed. The fight seemed to leave him. He sat down on the bench. "Damn Dakor! I thought I delayed his arrival." He scrubbed his hand down his face. "Alright. I'll be here to conduct the tests. I have to talk to her anyway. it's time I told her of our family connection."
“Good idea,” Carolyn commented. It wasn’t her place to say Dr Sage already knew. She turned back to her locker, trying to ignore the discomfort from her shoulder as she secured her hair in a tighter knot. “All going well, we should be finished with second round of surgeries by dinner.”
Hades noted the flinch. "You are very delicate with that shoulder. What's going on?"
“Just a patient fell and had me to break the fall, Mendez parched it up. It’s just tender,” Carolyn assured him. “I’ll let Mendez do the heavy work.”
"Hmm. Let Harris jump in on the surgery. I want to look at that shoulder."
“You want me to let Harris take my place?” Carolyn asked in mock horror. “Voluntarily?”
Hades smiled. She always had a way to make him smile when he was most upset. "Yeah. Just this once. I want to make sure you are okay."
“Fine, but only because you didn’t put me out an airlock,” she conceded. “Although you are going to bruise Mendez’s ego and he’s on a double shift.”
"He can take it or I could make him walk the plank."
“Ha! The cadets would pay to watch that,” Carolyn laughed. Crossing to the terminal she sent a message to Harris - grudgingly- before turning to Hades. “Okay, I guess I’m all yours.”
"Excellent. Let's go to the exam center." He really was concerned for her.
“You really don’t have to do this,” she pointed out as she followed him. “I just landed awkwardly is all. You have enough to be worrying about.”
"I'm alright." He lead her back to the bio bed and pointed to it. "Hope up." He picked up his tricorder and scanned her shoulder. "Who did you say fixed this?"
“The self proclaimed Romeo of the nurses, Mendez,” she told him as she sat and let him work. For one thing, it seemed to be focusing his attention away from other things.
"Yes well he'll be sleeping in an airlock for weeks!" He sighed picking up a long wand like instrument. "There is a small rip in the muscle. This will help." He waved the wand over it. "You will fill warmth and a tingle...Sorry I know you know this. Force of habit."
Carolyn grinned, teasing, “next you will have lollipops for good behaviour.”
“And it isn’t Mendez’s fault, I was the one who didn’t anticipate my patient would try to get out of bed the second my back was turned after treating a thigh injury. Next time I’ll come straight to you,” she promised.
"Excellent." He shut the device off. "Perfect! Your shoulder will be stiff for a day but back to normal by tomorrow." He used the tricorder to do one more scan and satisfied he closed it. "Excellent." He looked at Carolyn. "Now I have a few things I need to get done before I track Splendora down and bring her back here."
“Thank you,” she said, giving her shoulder a turn to test it out. “A million times better. Can I go rescue my patients from Harris?”
"You should rest," Hades said.
“I’ve booked out the holodeck for a while later tonight but I promised to stop by Kitty’s to make sure she is doing okay. Plus she feeds me,” Carolyn shrugged. “You are welcome to come eat with us. Kalani too obviously.”
"Okay then rest later. As for dinner...Kalani will be in the lab tonight. It took a lot of damage and the artifacts are needing some care. I will be saying goodbye to the final wave of Scooby squad members as you call them."
“Scooby Gang,” she corrected as she stood. “Well, you know Kitty always has some food ready. In the meantime I’ll sign the mountain of charts on my desk. Make sure you rest to. After you’ve seen Splendora of course.”
"Yes well that little problem has to be dragged back here soon. I don't want her hurt...in fact I have heard of this Earth thing called bubble wrap. I must get it for her....and maybe you as well."
“Keep up all this worrying about everyone and you’ll turn prematurely grey,” Carolyn teased as she moved past him towards the door, she hesitated. “If I ask someone to go rummaging around in my head to find out whatever it is I can’t remember... would you come with me?”
He gave a nod. "It would be a requirement...or order cause I out rank you. There it is settled. I order you to take me with you if you insist on letting someone rummage around in your head."
“Aye sir,” Carolyn grinned as she left the room.
