Mission:
Episode 98 - A Raid on Peace
Location: Starbase 400, Brig
Timeline: MD1, 0840hrs
ON:
Vito’s punishment was over and he strolled out of his quarters. He still wasn’t supposed to be on the Promenade for another six days, so he figured he’d go work out in the gym then spend some time with a holosuite program he’d wanted to try.
He made it to the turbolift when Gabe, one of the employees of ‘Good Fellas’ and another member of his and Tom’s old unit stepped out. “They let you off restriction huh?”
“Yeah, finally. I did get a good night’s sleep though.” Vito replied.
“Well, this will make you wish you’d stayed in bed. Scuttlebutt says Remans attacked Tarod IX. The Station is sending ships out shortly, an ERT mission.” Gabe replied.
“Didn’t Tom have a dealer coming in from Tarod IX?” Vito asked.
“Yeah, he was due to arrive next week. Looks like the deal will fall through now.” Gabe added.
Vito shook his head, then asked another question. “Do you know who they’re sending?”
“No. Probably Marines, Medical, some Engineering teams if it’s a standard ERT situation.” Gabe replied.
Vito nodded. He remembered back to just after the Dominion War when the Pegasus and George Washington were assigned to the Forth Fleet’s Task Force 44, it was the Emergency Response Team for the fleet. The term had fallen out of use in the years after the war as Starfleet built up its fleet numbers again and dedicated groups that went around putting out brush fires or helping those in need weren’t needed anymore.
Everything okay with restaurant?
“Yeah, we’ll open on time. Menu is set, wine is ready.” Gabe replied.
Vito nodded. “Good. I’ll be back next week. Until then, I’m going to enjoy this unplanned vacation.”
Gabe smirked before returning to the turbolift. Vito paused a moment before entering another turbolift.
Several minutes later the doors opened but Vito wasn’t near the Gym, he was at the Brig. He figured he’d check on Tom and let him know next week’s meeting was probably off.
Walking in he saw Tom and MacLeod sharing a cell. They were seated on opposite side, Mac in a pull out seat while Tom laid in the pullout bed.
“What can I do for you?” Ensign Harper asked when Vito entered.
“I need to see him.” Vito replied.
“You can see him from there.” Harper replied bluntly. “Fleet Admiral Bremer said no visitors.”
“This is important, Ensign.” Vito replied in a deep tone.
Harper put his hand on his phaser. “I don’t care. These men are locked up and right now they don’t have any privileges, that includes having visitors.”
“Ensign Harper, its fine.” MacLeod said from inside the cell.
Vito cocked his head to the site as Tom gave Mac a curious stare.
Harper looked back at Mac, then narrowed his eyes at Vito again before taking a few steps back to the brig console.
“Scan shows you’re unarmed. You can walk up to the yellow line, but that’s it. You can talk from there, you’ve got five minutes.” Harper said.
Vito gave a slight node then walked in, up to the yellow line.
“I just spoke to Gabe. Apparently Tarod IX was attacked by Remans. The Station is sending an ERT, they should be departing soon.” Vito explained.
“Any word from Robau?” Tom asked.
“Nothing. He’s supposed to arrive next week, right?” Vito asked.
“Yeah.” Tom replied.
“Did they have any causality or damage reports?” Mac asked.
“No.” Vito replied, “Apparently communications have been cut off.”
“Ensign Harper, can you get a message to Vice Admiral K’Temoc for me?” Mac asked.
Harper looked at him for a moment, “I’ll let him know you want to see him.”
“Thank you.” MacLeod replied. He was visibly worried about something.
“We’re going to be in here for the rest of the week, let Gabe know to I’d already posted the week’s menu, a copy will be in my office.” Tom added.
Vito nodded. “I’ll let him know. Do you need anything?”
“No. Thanks.” Tom replied.
“Alright, times up.” Harper said, stepped forward.
Vito eyed him a moment, then he turned and left the brig.
Tom laid back down on the bed while Mac paced for a moment. Tom watched him for minute before closing his eyes. “Something wrong?”
Mac stopped and let out a breath. “My sister, Sara, she is currently on Tarod IX. She’s an engineer with Caplinger Industries, helping with upgrades to the planet’s weather control system.”
“Isn’t that where the Borg first attacked the Federation along the Romulan Neutral Zone in 2364?” Tom asked.
Mac nodded as he took a seat facing toward the wall and slumped over, worried.
