Mission:
Episode 89 - Futility's Return
Location: At the edge of The Kaleb Sector
Timeline: MD2 1420hrs, Following 'Attacking the Borg'
USS Sentinel Briefing Room
Phelan was always used to beating everyone to any briefing he held. Looking at the readouts the Avenger transmitted, he knew that the coming hours would be difficult, even for a group of heavy hitters like this task force. Taking out transwarp gateways and conduits was something he has done before, but there was no doubt in his mind that the Borg have adapted since that time. Captain Castle sat next to him, looking at the same readouts. Even his past life in intelligence had him scratching his head on sum of the new features on their target. Both men looked forward to Captain Greenwood and his Tactical Officer's breakdown of the information, and this mission. He awaited the arrival of the ship Captains, and whoever they chose to bring to this meeting.
The first to arrive was the Captain of the Hades, a Magna Roman named Lucius Crassus. Ward knew him from his days on the Coral Sea.
Two more arrived at the same time. Captain Th'rosiik, an Andorian who commanded the Shogun, and Captain Wolfgang Bauer, a Terran who commanded the Odin.
They all greeted each other, and took a seat.
Colonel Hannon and Lieutenant Colonel Schnackel his Executive Officer beamed over to the Sentinel. Once they were given permission to board they walked to the turbo lift and headed for the Observation Lounge.
Once they arrived they entered and took there seats. "Admiral, Colonel Marcus Hannon Commanding Officer of the USS Cairo. This is my Executive Officer Lieutenant Nicole Schnackel." Marcus introduced themselves as they sat down.
Ward gave the new arrivals a nod. "Pleased to meet you Colonel."
Next to arrive were Colonel Pike and his Executive Officer Commander MacLeod. Pike introduced themselves to the Admiral. Mac remembered Ward from his childhood and days in the Forth Fleet aboard the USS George Washington, and he liked their chances a little more than before.
MacLeod's face looked familiar to him. So did the name. He also wondered is Colonel Pike was related to his old friend and former Sentinel Marine CO, Joe Pike. The resemblance was uncanny. He greeted them as they sat down.
Jack walked over to the Admiral and extended his hand:"It's nice to finally meet you Admiral, my cousin Joe Pike has told me quite a bit about you."
Phelan shook the Colonel's hand. "I hope it was all good things. I hope he is doing well."
Jack chuckled:"It was all good things. Joe is doing ok, he got his son back from the Orions with some help with a few Klingons. Though he lost his wife to a Borg attack. He's now aboard the U.S.S. Shadow as Second Officer and Chief Security."
"I never thought I would see the day Joe would be in Security. Good for him!"
A few minutes later a young Ensign followed his Captain into the room. He was clearly the youngest person in the room and even though he'd been around many Captains and Flag Officers before he felt a little nervous. He took a deep breath and quietly took a seat.
Mac looked over at K'Wor and smirked, "You can exhale now."
K'Wor smirked back as he let out a breath.
Ward was amused at the Cadet's discomfort, but that was to be expected.
Ryan followed shortly behind K'Wor as he entered the briefing. He took a seat next to the Cadet as he waited for the briefing to begin.
Ward stood up, pressed a few buttons. A holographic image of a Borg Transwarp Hub appeared over the conference table. "Gentlemen, this is our problem, and our mission is to take this thing out along with the conduit it serves. . It is located somewhere in the Bra'val Badlands. Phase 1 will be getting there. Once we get into two light years of it, traveling at warp will be impossible. Phase 2 will be to search it out. We will be detected as soon as we are in the area it is at. Phase 3 will be to take it out. Variables include an unknown strength of the Borg defenses, ships, etc... Captain Greenwood, please appraise us with an idea his Tactical Officer came up with that may help us out in combat."
K’Wor slowly stood and took another deep breath. He glanced at Greenwood then MacLeod, then exhaled. He then stepped to the back wall, tapped in a few commands on the PADD he had, and a basic display appeared.
“Admiral, my suggestion is for each ship to be partnered with another, basically a wingman like old style Earth fighter planes.” As he spoke, his confidence built. “The premise of this is added support and firepower. Against an enemy like the Borg who can concentrate fire on single vessels and overwhelm them, having ships work in pairs can not only help to deliver additional firepower to targeted sections of a Cube or in our case the Hub, as well as provide support and covering fire if we’re engaged by smaller ships like Probes that can out maneuver larger ships like the New Hampshire and Sentinel.” He paused a moment, then tapped another command onto the PADD, changing the wall display to a tactical overview of the ‘wingman’ maneuver being used by the Pegasus and Yorktown during their engagement against the Borg in the Zerian system in 2380, just before Bremer’s assimilation. He then showed another tactical view of the same maneuver being used again against the same Borg Cube during the mission to rescue Bremer that also destroyed the Borg vessel.
K’Wor then nodded to Ward before taking his seat and letting out another deep breath.
"Good job and thank you Cadet." This young man showed promise, if he survived the mission that is. "I want the Avenger teamed up with the Shogun. The New Hampshire with the Odin. The Cairo with the Hades. The Sentinel will be free to fill in or assist any of the pairs that need help. Now I know I did not pick you captains because you were overly cautious, but try not to throw your lives away. Unless there are any questions, you may return to your ships. We depart in ten minutes. We remain on Yellow Alert until further orders from me. Dismiss and God's speed."
Marcus and Nicole both nodded to the officers present and took there leave and headed back to their ship to get ready.
K’Wor and Greenwood both stood and returned to the Avenger while Mac and Pike returned to the New Hampshire.
