Sevlek looked at the report concerning the recent shakedown of the Yorktown. Starfleet Operations forwarded all reports from vessels operating in or near Starbase 400 to him and this one was flagged by the computer because the ship was testing a few of the systems the Gladiator Class was the pilot ship for.
He tapped his combadge, "Sevlek to K'Temoc. Please report to me."
K'Temoc, who had just arrived back on the Yorktown, tapped his commbadge, "On my way."
Sevlek nodded and returned to re-reading the report while awaiting for the officer to arrive.
Several minutes later, K'Temoc arrived outside Sevlek's Office and tapped the door buzzer. He looked back at the Officer who'd been shadowing him since he arrived on the Deck. He didn't like all the secrecy, even thought he understood that a lot of the intel that flowed into and out of the area needed to be kept secure...but still it was annoying.
"Enter." Sevlek spoke without looking up from the PADD that currently held his attention. As the doors opened, he spoke again, "Thank you for coming, captain."
K’Temoc looked around the room for a moment, then replied. “Yes sir, what can I do for you?”
Sevlek put the PADD down, "I was forwarded a copy of your report to Starfleet Operations. I would like you to tell me what occurred, in your own words, not those of a Starfleet report." Sevlek was well aware of the man's psych reports and the reports of those who had served as his CO.
K’Temoc nodded, “All right sir, basically, as the mission progressed we started to witness the Yorktown ‘thinking’ on her own. First it was minor things, adjustments of environmental systems, compartments getting warmer or cooler based off comments by the crew, or crew actions such as getting a blanket or rolling up their sleeves. Later, after we arrived at the freighter, the ship itself rescanned the vessel to find the Romulan defectors in stasis aboard. She, the Yorktown, moved into position, raised shields and extended them around the freighter to protect it as the ion storm hit. None of these maneuvers were even discussed on the Bridge, the Yorktown acted on her own, with conscious thought. Damage from the ion storm overloaded several key systems, including damaging and shutting down the core. We’ve seen no further...anomalies from the ship since. That’s the abridged version, sir.”
He looked Sevlek in the eye, waiting on a reply.
Sevlek nodded, "Purge all computer systems when you return to the ship." Before the man could say anything further he added, "This is one of the primary concerns many of us voiced when discussions began to begin installing the positronic cores on other starships."
K'Temoc nodded, "So it was a known issue or possibility?" He thought about asking why, but knew he wouldn't get an answer...Sevlek and his 'need to know' responses.
"It is a known issue or possibility." A pause as he looked at another PADD, then back to K'Temoc, "The test core wasn't online long enough, or interface with any ship systems and did not develop any type of personality. However, the Gladiator's core developed a mild persona after 3 weeks of operation."
Sevlek put the PADD down, "It started with the computer registering requests for timed notifications to wake for duty shifts. The computer would acknowledge them and would check to see how many hours the officer had been on duty and then adjust the requested time to guarantee a full rest period." He looked at K'Temoc, "Then it was deemed too dangerous to allow to continue when the computer locked out the weapons systems when the Gladiator was sent to intercept a freighter with questionable cargo. The order given was to disable engines, the ship decided the risk of the vessel being destroyed was too high because of the cargo."
K'Temoc shook his head for a moment, "There has to some kind of safe guards to prevent something like that from happening. If that were to happen during an actual crisis, loss of life could be disastrous."
"There is a countermeasure underway. The Gladiator is already using an alpha version of the monitoring software." Sevlek nodded, "If the core became self-aware during an actual crisis, it would be catastrophic."
K'Temoc nodded, having experienced a taste of it already. "Thank you sir." K'Temoc then left the Office, he had a round of drinks to buy for the Yorktown's crew.
