Mission:
Mission 86 - Discovery
Location: USS Yorktown
Timeline: MD2, 1345 hours, Following 'So Much For the Little Training Cruise'
ON:
Once the Yorktown cleared the Weapons’ Range, she blasted off at Warp Nine. A moment later, a Slipstream tunnel formed ahead of the ship and she streaked inside...the Yorktown-F’s first Slipstream flight.
K’Temoc was back on the Bridge, sitting in the CO’s chair, and he let out a smile, happy his vessel was operating at Slipstream as planned.
The forty-five minute sprint to the damaged freight was uneventful. As she approached the freighter, the Yorktown dropped out of Slipstream and slowed to a stop beside the disabled ship.
“Commander.” K’Temoc said to Yamaguchi, then he looked over at Nechayev “Signal the Em’kool, tell them we’re beaming over an away team and will start transporting their passengers aboard. Taakabe, keep a close eye on that ion storm. When it’s less than five minutes out, let me know.”
Yamaguchi had spent the last forty minutes or so at the aft station, carrying out the Captain's request, she had been asked to familiarize herself with the layout of the Em'kool as a smile graced her lips, she gently lifted the large glass of water to her lips, she took a mouthful as she heard the Captain addressing her by rank.
She turned her head to regard K'Temoc. "Sir." clearly she understood what was coming, she grasped the glass as she quickly recycled it. "Should I assemble my away team?" she inquired.
"Make it so." K'Temoc replied, then smirked hearing Picard's voice instead of his own.
Yamaguchi nodded as she tapped her combadge. "Yamaguchi to Lieutenant's Dvald and Lasky, meet me in the transporter bay." she commented. "Ms Gillo, you too."
The response came back quickly. "This is Dvald, I'm on my way sir." as Fives chipped in. "Copy that, headin' there now."
Hollly looked at the Lt. Commander and responded, "Yes, sir." To the order as she was not going to waste time.
"Yes sir. Signal sent." Natia said as she gained access to the ships schematics just in case.
Nuala was a little disappointed she wasn't part of the away team. Given the approaching ion storm and Nuala was the Yorktown's science officer she understood her place was on the bridge.
"Aye Sir. I'm monitoring the storm." Takabe replied.
"Very good K'Temoc replied, then he stood up and walked over beside Takabe." Any chance our shields would fully protect us from a storm that sever?" He already knew the answer, but he was hoping the young Science Officer has some ideas.
"It's an electromagnetic storm Sir. I'd be very surprised if the storm doesn't do any damage to our electrical systems." Takabe answered K'Temoc. "As a precaution we could power down any non essential systems." Nuala added.
"Do it." K'Temoc replied. He'd seen what an ion storm could do to a ship, he didn't want to see the new Yorktown end up like them.
Yamaguchi looked at K'Temoc. "Sir, permission to leave the bridge?"
K’Temoc looked back and flashed a smile, “Go.” He made a mental note to remind the Commander not to be so formal during a rescue mission.
Torilla nodded, with that she turned and walked off of the bridge, her long strides eating up the distance quickly.
Moments later she rounded the corner as she entered the transporter room, standing waiting for her was Lieutenant's Lasky and Dvald, both with kits and gear in hand. "Ready to go sir."
"Just waiting for Lieutenant Gillo now." Yamaguchi commented as she looked at her away team. "Okay, Fives, I want you to head to their engine room, chances are they will want to try and get their engines working so... take a look and see what you can do for them."
Lasky nodded. "Yessir."
Yamaguchi turned to the taller then average Bolian who seemed to be always happy and cheerful. "You'll help with the evacuation, seeing to their medical needs at the same time, anyone who is wounded, see what they need and sent them back here.... we have ninety plus people coming over in less then ten minutes with an untested crew." she paused a moment. "Questions.?"
"What about you sir?"
"I'll handle the Captain and the crew of this ship, I want Lieutenant Gillo to have a look at their computer system, see if she can determine what went wrong." she paused. "The bridge will let us know when we're at Five minutes and then again at two minutes, we'll evacuate at thirty seconds if we can't get her working again."
Bridge
Meanwhile back on the bridge Takabe was studying her display. "Captain, I know you are aware of the power of ion storms. As your science officer, I still have to remind you that if we get caught in the ion storm communication will be disrupted and transporter malfunction will increase exponentially. Takabe told K'Temoc with a little concern in her voice.
"Understood." K'Temoc replied as he looked over Branson's shoulder at Flight Control. "I'm hoping we'll be able to clear the area before it arrives." He glanced back at one of the displays, seeing the Away Team hadn't beamed over yet, wondering what the delay was.
"Chief, set a course away from the storm, be ready to engage warp engines on a moment's notice." K'Temoc ordered before walking back to his seat.
"Aye sir." The Chief replied. Branson was a long time member of the Pegasus crew, dating back to before Admiral Bremer took over as Starbase 400's CO. He was an exceptional pilot, and K'Temoc was relying on his skill to get the Yorktown away from the deadly storm.
Transporter Room
Torilla looked between the four of them gathered. "Alright, lets go." and with that she plus the others all stepped onto the pad. "Chief?"
"Ready for transport sir... "
"Energize when ready?" and with that the Chief nodded before beaming the away team over to the damaged freighter. Torilla and the three others with her all stepped off of the PADD to be met by another transporter operator and what she assumed was either the security chief or the Captain.
"I'm Lt Commander Torilla Yamaguchi of the starship Yorktown, we came as soon as we got your distress call." she explained. "This is Lieutenant Dvald." she indicated the Bolian. "Lieutenant Tom Lasky." she introduced the human male next to her and then she indicated the second female with her. "This is Lieutenant Gillo."
The Freighter Captain, a Human named Morcos, stepped forward. "Welcome aboard, thank you for coming for quickly. Our engines are offline, one of the bussard collectors had a was damaged, we think by a micro quantum singularity. When we stopped to check damage and make repairs we were hit by several small asteroids, they damaged the other nacelle and sent a feed back through our power grid knocking out impulse engines, latterial sensors, and gravity on deck six." The Captain explained. "Our Engineer has been trying to get systems restored, but every time one system comes online, another goes back out."
"Fives, go see if you can help their Engineer, Holly go with him."
Holly nodded and took off after Fives to get down to engineering.
One of the others present nodded. "I'll show you the way, come with me."
Torilla watched as the three departed. "As a precaution, I'd like to evacuate your passengers over to the Yorktown..."
"Yes yes, please, and we have several items in Cargo Bay Two that we need to send over too. Medical supplies, uh, some personal items of the passengers, and umm, a few other things we need to secure too." The Captain explained."
Yamaguchi tapped her combadge. "Yamaguchi to Yorktown. We've begun the evacuation of the passengers and equipment, they have some medical supplies, passengers belongings, and some other things they want us to beam over as well as the people..." Torilla hoped that Captain K'Temoc would pick up the hint she dropped in there.
"Understood. Passengers come first, then medical supplies followed by anything else after that, if there's time." 'Freighter Captains' K'Temoc thought, 'almost as bad as Ferengi, they love profit'. "
"Yessir. We're going to send them over via the Cargo transporters as well. try and speed things up a bit..." she explained. "Fives is looking at the Engines, Gillo is with him, I have Dvald with me helping." she wanted to be sure that he was okay with her plan, she felt a flush of embarrassment as she suddenly felt like a newly minted Lieutenant all over again.
"Very good, get them over here as fast as you can, we're down under ten minutes now, that storm is approaching fast." K'Temoc replied.
"Yessir, we're on it. Yamaguchi out." she turned back to the Captain. "Are your passengers ready Captain?" she inquired. "We'll start the evacuation."
Yamaguchi watched as the first eight or nine people stepped into the room and quickly, they stepped onto the pad, their belonging's in hand, she inhaled softly as the first and then the second group were beamed over to the Yorktown.
Dvald's voice came over the Com system. "Dvald to Yamaguchi, evacuation proceeding at pace, we should be completed shortly."
"Understood Lieutenant." she paused. "Fives?"
"I'm here, and this ship is a write off Commander... her main magnetic coil is misaligned, it wouldn't be a big deal to fix under normal circumstances but no chances in the time allotted."
Yamaguchi sighed softly. "Alright... " she turned to the Captain who clearly had heard every word said. "I'm Sorry Captain... I wish we'd had more time."
“These items are important, you must get them to your ship!” The Captain replied, concerned.
"We'll do what we can for everyone and everything else."
On the Freighter, down in the cargo bay. Lieutenant Siaxx Dvald watched as a half dozen more passengers of the freighter all stepped onto the transporter pad, she smiled as they were then beamed over. "That's forty or so." she said to the Operator. "How much time?"
"Another four minutes or so." the young human woman commented. "Do you think this old boat can be saved?"
"I don't know." Dvald admitted before tapping her combadge. "Dvald to Yamaguchi, what's the word sir?" it was normally a great offense to address a senior officer in the way that Dvald had done so, the response was what she had expected. "No luck Siaxx.... and try to remember proper respect Siaxx..." Torilla chided the Bolian gently but Torilla knew it had to be done.
"Understood." she turned her attention back as she looked at the Operator.
"I'm Sorry..."
"I'll get over it." the younger woman responded. "But.... at least you tried.. that's all that can be asked Lieutenant.... you tried."
Siaxx nodded. "Fair enough..." she sighed. "How many people do you need to evacuate?" she commented.
"Another ten or so.... then I'll move onto the cargo."
"Alright." Siaxx said quietly.
Meanwhile in Engineering, Lieutenant Lasky sighed as there was a loud bang, a large cloud emerged from the small space he had just vacated. "Well.. that's that. That was the last drive motivator. We're not going anywhere..." he regarded the Betazoid woman. "You'd best call it in.."
Yorktown, Bridge
"Captain, the storm is going to be here in less than five minutes. It's moving extremely fast." Takabe stated with a little concern in her voice.
K’Temoc looked at the freighter on the main viewer for a moment, then said aloud. “Okay, that’s it. Pull our people out of there, get the rest of the civilians off, and let’s get out of here.” He didn’t like it, but saving lives was more important.
“It’s going to take about three and a half minutes to beam the rest of the people over to the Yorktown.” Gardner added.
K’Temoc nodded as he hit the comm, “Yorktown to Yamaguchi, the ion storm will be here in about four minutes, finish beaming the passengers aboard and return to the ship yourself, now.”
Freighter
Yamaguchi who was standing in the transporter room tapped her combadge. "Understood sir. We're still evacuating crew and passengers... we should be done shortly." she responded as Fives and Gillo came around with a half dozen others who got into the lineup.
"Ahh. Gillo, Fives... head over back to the Yorktown."
"Yessir." Fives commented. "I'm sorry."
"You did your best Fives.... Nothing to be sorry for." she then turned to Holly. "You too Lieutenant, you did what you could." Yamaguchi smiled at the two of them as they stepped onto the pad with a few of the others, Yamaguchi watched them beam out before turning to the transporter operator. "How many more.?"
"About fourteen people sir... but we still have several metric tons of cargo to move as well." the younger woman responded. "its going to take a couple of minutes."
Yamaguchi raised an eyebrow. "That Ion storm is approaching quickly..." she commented. "its got to be about four minutes away at most.... " she paused. "we need to step this up a little. We're running out of time."
Yorktown, Bridge
K’Temoc was pacing the Bridge, they were running out of time, fast...he know it had to be under a minute now as the Ion Storm loomed large on the main viewer.
“How long?” K’Temoc asked of Takabe.
"Sir, the storm is right on top of us." Takabe urgently told K'Temoc.
K’Temoc tapped his commbadge, “Commander you’re out of time.”
Yamaguchi's voice came back a moment later. "Understood Yorktown, on our way back now."
A moment later, Gardner looked back at the Captain, “Sir, everyone has beamed aboard.”
K’Temoc didn’t waste time acknowledging, he looked up at Branson at Flight Control, “Chief, get us...” but before he could finish, Gardner cut him off as his panel beeped.
“Sir! I’m still picking up life signs aboard the freighter, very faint, they appear to be four or five people in stasis in one of the aft cargo holds.”
“Beam them to Sick-Bay!” K’Temoc replied.
“I can’t, interference from the storm.” Gardner replied.
“Captain, the ship is moving forward, to within five-hundred meters of the Freighter.” Branson looked back at K’Temoc, “Sir I didn’t set that course!”
“Our shields are extending out, surrounding the Freighter.” Gardner added.
“Ensign, did you do that?” K’Temoc asked Nechayev as she looked around confused too.
“Then who...?” K’Temoc started to ask to no one in particular. The Yorktown herself was moving in to protect the Freighter and the people still aboard.
Just then Yamaguchi herself came back onto the bridge. "Captain." she greeted him before taking one of the stations at the back of the bridge that was unmanned.
Then suddenly, the Ion Storm hit. Panels and monitors started to flicker, then Tactical Two blew out, and sent Gardner flying back and to the deck.
K’Temoc tapped his commbadge, “Medical Team to the Bridge!”
The response came back almost instantly. "On our way Captain."
The ship shook and more systems blew out and sparks flew. After a moment, the comm beeped.
“Engineering to Bridge, Captain, we have EPS conduits and power relays across the ships overloading from the ionized radiation from the storm, I have teams standing by. Also, the Computer Core just took a major power surge, we’re trying to reroute ship primary functions to backup processors but they’ll only be able to handle simple flight control, life support, and absolute essential functions...we need to get back to Starbase 400 for repairs and a new core.”
The Yorktown shook again, “Understood.”
A few moments later, the storm front passed leaving the Yorktown nearly powerless and drifting.
The nearby turbolift doors opened and out came Lieutenant Siaxx Dvald, medkit in hand, she looked for the wounded as she moved speedily to the side of the downed Lieutenant, she opened her medkit then went to work.
“Let’s get a full damage report and contact Starbase 400 to apprise them of our situation and request a tug for us and the Freighter. Takabe, scan the Freighter, see those people in stasis are still alive. Nechayev, get that Freighter Captain up here, I’ve got a few questions for him!” K’Temoc ordered.
"I'm still reading feint life signs Captain." Takabe informed K'Temoc. "Sir, if you send a team over to look for what ever is alive over there I would like to go too. My biological family was involved in a lot of this kind of activity. I know a few tricks of the trade."
Yamaguchi turned her head. "Captain... If there was a life form in the Yorktown's computer core.... she's gone now." she said softly.
Siaxx who was still on the bridge heard the statement and what it implied in Commander Yamaguchi's voice as she held her silence, she shook her head as if trying to shake something loose as she went back to her patient.
Dvald nodded to the other nurse who was assisting her. "With the transporters down, we'll need to carry the Lieutenant back to the medical bay."
"Aye Doctor." the young man responded as he turned to prep the stretcher that they had brought with them, within moments the three of them were gone from the Yorktown's bridge.
Yamaguchi waited for the freighter Captain to be brought to the bridge as she was anticipating what was sure to be a most interesting question and answer session.
