Mission:
Mission 86 - Discovery
Location: USS Yorktown, Bridge
Timeline: MD1 1940hrs, Following 'Something is very wrong here - Part Two'
ON:
K’Temoc was still on the Bridge, he’d let the Senior Staff have some time off while the ship was enroute to Poinsett so they could eat and relax before the drills started.
Things had been quiet since the accident on Deck Two, and even the Captain was starting to think it might of just been a fluke…but then he received Yamaguchi’s report describing additional ‘problems’. It was almost like the Yorktown was ‘thinking’ for itself.
K’Temoc decided to test the theory….
He looked at Chief Branson who was manning the Flight Control position, “Chief, increase our speed to warp nine.”
Branson glanced back, he knew…up until this point…they were easing the new Yorktown along, but jumping to warp nine was a test. “Aye sir, increasing speed.” With a touch to a few select buttons, the Defiant class ship accelerated, almost leaping forward.
“Warp five…six…eight…warp nine Captain.” Branson called out.
K’Temoc looked over the readings from the Operations position, everything seemed fine. Now, to take it a step further. “Chief, what’s our ETA?”
“At warp nine, within twenty minutes now.” Branson replied. The Yorktown had been traveling for hours, bouncing between warp one and warp four, but now at warp nine the last bit of distance would be covered quickly.
“Chief, maintain course and speed…” K’Temoc said, knowing the ship was on a collision course with the small facility that controlled the weapons range.
Branson again looked back, but trusted the Captain, even if he didn’t know what was going on. “Aye sir.” The Chief took his hands off the console and placed them in his lap as he waited.
The twenty minutes seemed to feel like twenty hours, but as the Yorktown neared the range, the sensors beeped alerting the crew to the impending collision with an object a head…then suddenly, the Yorktown dropped out of warp on her own and slowed to quarter impulse before stopping less than a kilometer from the facility.
“Chief?”
“I didn’t do it Captain, and the conn was set to keep us at course and speed.” Branson replied. “Could it be a new safety protocol programmed in to bring a ship out of warp in case of collision?”
K’Temoc shook his head, “If so, it’s nothing I’ve ever heard of. Secure the ship, make sure we’re not moving from this spot.” K’Temoc then tapped the comm, “Captain to Senior Staff, report to the Bridge. Engineering, I want a full series of Level One diagnostics ran on the Flight Control and Propulsion systems, now.”
Something was going on, something wasn’t right, but that something had now saved K’Temoc’s life and the lives of the entire crew…
