Setting: USS Saratoga
Captain's Quarters
D Deck

Commander James Winter was off-duty and relaxing in his quarters. Saratoga was due to return to Starbase 400 based on earlier orders to expedite return as soon as possible, only nine hours ago the USS Hamburg under Captain Carlos Romero had relieved the Saratoga of the investigation into Deep Space Six's utter silence as well as assumed the ship's mission of placing tachyon detection grid materials on the base. Saratoga's ETA was expected to be around 2100 Tonight.

"Bridge to Captain."

Winter put the book he was reading down and replied, "This is Winter, go ahead."

"Sir it's Barrows, the Charlie Shift Watch Officer. We've received a packet from Admiral Bremer."

"Patch it in down here Lieutenant, carry on."

"Aye sir." With the link closed Winter went over to his private desk and clicked the desk top computer interface to read the incoming data packet by Admiral Bremer. He began reading it.

Touching a console button he said, "All senior officers report to Captain's Quarters for Debrief."

The packet informed him that he would be relieved of his command of the Saratoga and then would assume command of the Laffey.

Within minutes Thorin, Lee, Archer,K'Wor and Ragan arrived surprised to even be included in this debrief.

James got down to business. "Alright people Admiral Bremer was pleased with our results to date and as you know we are heading home and will arrive late tonight. However, we will have a short downtime before we ship out again. However, none of us will be shipping out on this ship again."

There were looks of confusion and wonder. "As of 0930 tomorrow I will be relieved by Colonel Lee Pike and he will become the new commanding officer of the Saratoga, this ship will become Starbase 400's Marine Deployment vessel." Winter leaned backwards in his chair.

"Where will we go sir?" Thorin asked.

Winter replied with a smile. "Good question, You've all be reassigned along with me and will follow to the USS Laffey."

James heard K'Wor, his tactical officer and son of the admiral mention she was Defiant. "My billet on the station is Tactical Operations, the purpose for that reassignment is to better ensure that I am able to carry out my duties."

There were sighs of relief that the crew will be held together, they started to gel and James took a personal liking to them. "Mr. Archer along with Ensign Ragan, I want you to familiarize yourself with the Defiant class as you both will be heavily involved, since you are Operations Mr. Archer you will also double as the ship's chief engineer until otherwise noted by myself or the admiral."

"Yes sir." Archer said. Ragan couldn't believe it, she was no longer to just some ferry pilot, she was permanently assigned as a Starship helm officer. Brandy simply smiled.

"Number One, you will oversee the transition for Colonel Pike on-board but I do expect you to be on the Laffey prior to our departure."

Thorin, the Andorian slightly bowed his head, "As you wish Captain."

"Any questions?"

There were none.

"You're all dismissed except for Mr. Thorin and Mr. Lee."

Everyone else filed out of the Captain's quarters intending to begin packing for their eventual transfer to the Laffey.

Growing serious with his First officer and his Intelligence Officer both in the room he ordered the computer, "Computer, seal my quarters, disengage audio and visual recording devices."

A few chirps and the computer replied, "Quarters Locked, Visual And Audio Recording Devices De-activated."

"Sir?" Thorin asked innocently for an Andorian. Winter began to explain. "Our next mission in a normal sense would have us violate Starfleet General Order Number Seven."

He let that sink in for both men. "Talos IV?" Lee asked surprised. James nodded. "Our mission begins there. Colonel Pike will fill us in tomorrow, your task Ensign is to identify any nearby threats that could pose a problem for us in that sector of the Talos Star Group. We will operate in a Task Group with three other starships with Colonel Pike in overall command according to my information from the Admiral."

"Why would anyone risk going there its been off limits for over a century." Thorin stated. "Normally I'd agree with you Lieutenant, but Captain, does Starfleet know something we don't hence the lifting of the ban?"

"I'm not sure, but whatever it is Colonel Pike will brief us when he has the time. Your job is to identify any potential threats we will face. Use Captain's Code 47, any information you bring to me has to be cleared by the Admiral first. "

"Noted sir."

"Number One?"

"I don't like it, if the Ferengi get a sniff of the temporary lifting of the ban, someone may try and take advantage."

"Good point, anything else?"

There was nothing else. "Computer, reactivate recording devices and disengage the locks."

The Computer did as instructed. "Mr. Thorin, I want to speak to Colonel Pike, have the bridge pipe a secured transmission to him."

"Aye sir."

As the other two officers filed out Winter put a finger to his temple and rested his chin on the rest of his fingers looking in deep thought.


Lee was sitting in his quarters on the Star Base looking over the orders for the latest mission when he got a message that Commander Winter wanted to speak to him.

Lee tapped a couple buttons and then turned to face the screen."Pike here, you wanted to speak with me Commander?"

Winter looked at Pike whom had been promoted and then changed departments. "First off Congratulations on your promotion and transfer to the Marines, best man for the job. Secondly, I've briefed my crew on our transfer to the Laffey tomorrow. However, I have this little note here from the Admiral that we're going on a little field trip to Talos IV because of a suspension of general order seven from the President. I've ordered my intelligence officer to dig up information on any tactical problems that might arise from that area of space. Care to fill me in on the trip?"

Lee nodded:"Thank you Commander. I have spoken already to Admiral Bremer. The Taloans have contacted Star Fleet and have asked that someone come retrieve the remains of Commodore Chris Pike so he may have a proper burial. And with me being a direct descendant of Commodore Pike, Star Fleet and Admiral Bremer have decided that I be the one to lead the mission to retrieve the remains and take them back to Earth."


"What are my orders since my crew and I will be joining the party?"

Lee looked over the padd for a second:"Your orders are to go to Talos IV with me and to be my escort in this mission."


"Conduct security of the system? Have the Talosians made any quid pro quo demands as we accept the remains of the Commodore in exchange for anything else? opening a dialogue, etc any of those things within the diplomatic arena?"

Lee nodded:"It probably wouldn't hurt to conduct a security system check. All the Talosians have said is to come get the remains of Commodore Pike."

"Very well Colonel, I look forward to the work, Estimated time of arrival is two Hours out."

Lee nodded again:"Look forward to working with you too Commander, contact me when you get to the arrival and we'll meet with the others and go from there."
