Taking a Look Around

658 words; about a 3 minute read

Mission: Mission 86 - Discovery
Location: USS Yorktown
Timeline: MD1 1030hrs - Following 'Taking Flight'

ON:

K’Temoc sat in the CO’s chair of the new USS Yorktown-F and he couldn’t help but to smile. It seemed the ship was operating well and was making Warp 4 toward the weapons range now. After a few more minutes, the Captain stood and walked around the Bridge, glancing at all of the monitors and giving a pat on the back to his Bridge crew.

After checking the monitors at the aft station, K’Temoc said aloud, “I love this ship.” After a smile, he added to Yamaguchi. “Commander you have the Bridge, I’ll be in Engineering for a little bit.”

A short time later K’Temoc stepped off the turbolift and walked into Engineering. Most of the Engineering Staff was busy at work, verifying systems, putting last minutes final touches on minor things…like placing name plates on doors, cabinets, and containers as well as other minor things.

K’Temoc walked around, informally inspecting Engineering, and everything there was humming along too. While K’Temoc was walking by, Chief Warrant Officer Blackthorne said, “She’s operating well sir. We’ve had a few minor hiccups here and there, but nothing out of the norm for a ship on her first trial run.”

K’Temoc nodded, “Keep a record of them, I want to make sure everything is addressed…and we don’t see a pattern.”

“Aye sir.” Blackthorne replied.

Satisfied everything was going well, K’Temoc left Engineering and headed up to Deck Two to stop into his personal quarters aboard the ship. As he stepped out of the turbolift, K’Temoc saw an attractive Engineering Crewman working to install a computer access panel along the bulkhead.

“Good morning.” K’Temoc said with a smile.

The Crewman smiled back, her blue eyes sparkled, “Good morning Captain.”

K’Temoc passed her by as he walked into his Quarters. He didn’t have many personal items there yet, a few pictures of family and friends was about it, but in the small Captain’s Quarters of a Defiant Class ship, there wasn’t room for much. Still, he wanted to look around and he was happy to see the carpet had finally been installed…he actually liked the darker shade of blue too.

After checking for any personal messages, he logged out of his terminal and headed back toward the turbolift. Passing the Crewman again, they smiled at each other and K’Temoc made a mental note to find out who she was. A moment later the turbolift doors opened and K’Temoc stepped in, but as he did he heard an odd sound behind him. As he turned around, he looked toward the Crewman, but the panel caught his eye…

“Crewman, get down!” K’Temoc tried to jump out to get her, but the doors on the turbolift suddenly closed and sealed him in. He tried the panel to override the lock, but nothing. He tried to manually override, nothing. He heard the sound of an explosion and after a few moments the doors to the turbolift released their locks and opened.

K’Temoc rushed to the aid of the injured crewmember as he tapped his commbadge, “Captain to Sick Bay, Medical Emergency on Deck Two, Section three.!”

He rolled the woman over to find cuts and burns across her face and hands, but he could feel a pulse so he knew she was alive. K’Temoc grabbed a medkit from the wall and set the hypo to give a dose of Dermaline. He waited til the Med team arrived to care for the Crewman and get her to Sickbay, and for a repair team to arrive to start work on the panel before heading back to the Bridge.

On the short turbolift ride to the Bridge, K’Temoc wondered why the turbolift doors locked and wouldn’t respond to his override just long enough for the panel to blow out, then release….
