Crossing the Border

1,272 words; about a 6 minute read

Mission: Mission 83 - Recovery
Location: USS Lexington, USS Vanguard, USS Gladiator
Timeline: Following 'Readying the Lexington' and 'Getting On-board The Vanguard'

ON:

Both the Lexington and Vanguard were cloaked as they moved in close to the Gladiator as the vessels cleared the space doors and headed out into open space.

The three vessels set course for the Romulan border and blasted off into Warp. A short time later, they dropped to impulse as they neared the Romulan border.

USS Lexington

Mike sat back in his chair, he knew Sevlek would be trying the codes Starfleet Intel had picked up, and he waited to see if the codes worked.

USS Vanguard

Deela was still waiting for a plan from the Marines and to hear form Mike if it was a go. She hated playing the waiting game but she had no choice in the matter.

USS Gladiator

Sevlek waited for the officer at Ops to give him a status report. After a moment or two at idle the woman spoke, "Admiral, the codes work, but not well enough to actually allow anything more than a Defiant class starship through the hole."

"Is there any way to expand the gap in the tachyon net?" Sevlek asked, even though he already knew the answer.

"Negative, sir."

Sevlek looked to Zandusky on his right, "Signal Commander Ledr'na to initiate the deflector damage and to ensure that there is enough interference to allow the Lexington and Vanguard through undetected. Lieutenant Morris, when the deflector damage happens and we send a status update, include a coded micro-burst data packet to both the Lexington and Vanguard." He turned to look forward again, "Lieutenant Aiden, when the deflector blows out you will ensure we cross far enough into Romulan space to clear the tachyon detection grid."

USS Lexington

On the Bridge of the Lexington, Mike was eagerly awaiting word from the Gladiator, giving them the go, but instead a Science Officer spoke up from Science II.

"Admiral, there's a problem aboard the Gladiator, their deflector's malfunctioned, they appear to be drifting across the Romulan border."

Mike looked up, he knew it must of meant either the codes Starfleet Intel had were no good, or they didn't open enough of a window. Then, the data-burst from the Gladiator came in, confirming the Admiral's suspicions.

"Look sharp everyone, we should have Romulans decloaking soon." Mike said to the Bridge crew.

USS Vanguard

Mike's crew wasn't the only one who noticed the Gladiator drifting, the Vanguard crew did as well. She came to the same conclusion too. She leaned over to her XO, "I hope that Sevlek knows what he is doing." Her XO nodded back.

"Here we go...oh joy...Romulans."

USS Gladiator

Sevlek leaned back in the chair, if intelligence data was correct the patrol for this area should be here already and waiting. He spoke to the tactical officer, "Wide-ranged functional scans in the extreme upper tachyon and tetryon scans should reveal the Romulan patrol."

The young man nodded as he carried out the order but before he could initiate the scan, he spoke in quick tones, "Sir, Romulan Valdore class warbird decloaking."

Sevlek nodded, "Run the scan." There would be at least 2 other vessels with this patrol, both no doubt cloaked and waiting for a reason to decloak.

The Ops officer spoke now, "Admiral, we're being hailed by the Romulan vessel."

Zandusky looked at Sevlek as he said, "On screen, Lieutenant."

The starfield on the screen was replaced with a narrow field of vision of the Romulan bridge. The Romulan at the center of that view stood, as if to intimidate the Federation officers, "I am Commander Varalek of the Romulan Warbird Ashhal. You have violated our sovereign territory. Explain yourself before I destroy your vessel."

Sevlek stood and placed his hands behind his back as he replied in flat, emotionless tones. "I am Admiral Sevlek. This is the starship Gladiator and we have suffered damage to our navigational deflector array as a result of an EPS conduit rupture. We will only be here for another 108 minutes."

The Romulan's face hardened. "You have violated our space. Prepare to be boarded or be destroyed."

Sevlek looked at the tactical officer who nodded and held up his right hand with two fingers outstretched, indicating there were 2 cloaked vessels nearby who didn't match the profiled of the Lexington or Vanguard. Knowing fully that the Romulans were still listening, Sevlek spoke, "Raise shield and power weapons." Now he looked back to the viewscreen, "Commander Varalek, you will find that this vessel is more than capable of ensuring your destruction and the destruction of both of your cloaked escorts in short order, even with a damaged navigational deflector."

The Romulan smirked, "More than just your navigational deflector is damaged if you think there are two vessels here with us."

Sevlek looked at the Tactical Officer again, "Have you identified the vessels?"

The man nodded, "I have, sir. Two Mogai Class Warbirds, the Hkren and the Ushnosa."

The Romulan took on an indignant tone in his stance, "You have two of your hours to make repairs. If you are not gone within those two hours, we will see how capable your vessel is against three, or more, Romulan warships."

The viewscreen shut down and Sevlek spoke, "Send a status update to Starfleet Command and a message to the Lexington and Vanguard that they are clear to proceed at half impulse until they clear the distortion field our deflector dish blow out caused."

The Ops Officer nodded, "Messages sent."

USS Lexington

Mike had listened in on the conversation between Sevlek and Varalek over the comm channel. He couldn't help but to smirk. He then glanced at the sensor display on his left armrest display. The Constantinople. Laffey, and Ark Royal were nearby on their patrol routes, so he felt confident in situation as the Lexington and Vanguard started moving out.

"It'll take us about forty minutes to clear the area at half impulse." Murphy commented from the Conn position.

"Understood. Move us out, keep to half impulse for fifty minutes, then we'll increase to full impulse. Maintain that speed until the Gladiator is safely back in Federation space, then we'll set course for Gamma Crateris. Mister Talan, data burst to the Gladiator, let them know we're moving out."

USS Vanguard

Deela was informed of the same information as Mike was. They kept watch of the Lexington, playing a game of follow the leader. There was no room for error.

"Ma'am, the Lexington is on the move. Orders?"

Eyes were on Deela, "Follow the Lexington's lead and pray that everything goes to plan." Deela didn't get nervous often but with this mission, she was.

**2 Hours Later**
USS Gladiator

Sevlek turned to the tactical station as the officer there spoke, "Both the Lexington and Vanguard have moved away and cleared the distortion field."

Zandusky looked at Sevlek, "Admiral, the deflector is repaired."

Sevlek nodded as he sat down and Zandusky spoke to the helm, "Lieutenant, bring us about and set course for the other side of the border. Standard patrol pattern."

The officer nodded as the starship turned around gracefully and began accelerating at full impulse. The ship would patrol the border for a short period of time to ensure the Lexington and Vanguard didn't encounter any unforeseen difficulties.

USS Lexington

Sensors showed Gladiator was on the move, back to Federation space, and Mike knew the Romulans would stay tight on her til she cleared Romulan space. This was the moment the Lexington and Vanguard were waiting on, and they warped off and headed out for their targets.
