Mission:
Mission 83 - Recovery
Location: USS Lexington-D (Security Office)
Timeline: Following "Readying the Lexington"
ON:
Ensign Brody had just left the bridge where he had been relieved at Tactical by Warrant Officer Talan. Brody was informed that a cache of Romulan weapons and supplies for their mission had been delivered to the Security Office. The Reman rescue team was to familiarize themselves with the hardware before the away mission.
After a brief turbolift ride, Brody entered Security and realized he was not the first arrival. Ensign Baratan was already present and was eyeballing a disruptor. Brody had studied her personnel file some time prior and realized her time with the RSE would be invaluable during the mission. He strolled up to Saith and offered a smile. "It's good to be working with you again, Ensign." He picked up a Romulan Centurion uniform and was surprised by its weight. "What do you think about this mission?"
Saith frowned, “It is good to see you again Ensign Brody.” With a deep breath she continued, “I am not looking forward to this mission.” She tried to keep her voice even. She didn’t know Brody enough to tell him about her life, but she was keenly aware of her trepidation.
She glanced at Brody and handed him the disruptor she was looking at. “What is your position on rescuing Remans and taking out a Rihan vessel?” she did not mean to have an icy tone, but it came across that way regardless.
Even if she hadn't said as much, Brody could tell from Saith's demeanor that she was apprehensive about her role in the mission. He did his best to put her at ease, though he was far from a counselor and nor was he her friend at this point. "I try to avoid the politics of missions. I see an opportunity to protect the Federation from a credible and significant threat. That's my focus."
He couldn't help but feel for Saith as she would be going up against members of her race. That could not be an easy task, even if she were now a member of Starfleet. "There's a good chance that if things go bad planet side that you'll have put down a few Romulans. You going to be good with that?"
Saith paused, “no. I cannot honestly say that I will be. I might be, but I am unsure.” She turned and looked at Ensign Brody. Without going into details Saith gave him a little more information, “on the other hand, most of my own people did not treat me well. I had a hand in killing my own father. And the Remans, well the Remans are to blame for everything to do with the downfall of the Empire. I would rather see them dead than help rescue them.”
This was true, at least in Saith’s opinion. “My relationship with the Federation is shaky in itself. So, do I know how I will react? Honestly, no I don’t, and if you are going into a fight with me protecting your back that is something you should know up front. I hope that I can do my duty.” She slammed the weapons locker shut, locked it and moved towards the door. “Have you been to the bridge yet?”
"Just came from there actually. I got Warrant Officer Talan settled in at Tactical. I'll be heading to the mess hall after this to grab a bite." He followed Saith towards the exit.
He had considered her previous comments about the Romulans, Remans and the mission in general. He may not have always gotten along with many of his Starfleet counterparts, but they could always be trustrd. This Saith was something new entirely. He got in her way, preventing her from leaving. "Ensign, you seem like a good person and I hope we have lots of time to get to know each other better, but I must be clear. Do not underestimate my desire for self preservation." He gave her a stern look so there was no confusion as to how serious he was." I can never understand just how conflicted you must feel, but if I ever turn around to find your disruptor pointed at me instead of the enemy, I won't hesitate to put you down."
Brody stepped aside, allowing Saith passage. He threw on a smile as if to indicate 'no hard feelings' and proceeded into the corridor. "As long as we're on the same side, Saith, know that I will have your back. Even at the cost of my own life."
Saith smiled and nodded. “Understood, I would do the same. I just wanted you to know that I intend to do my job, but sometimes what I intend and what I actually do does not always meet. See you soon.” She turned and headed for the turbo lift which would carry her to the bridge.
She might as well get this over with. Her last mission with Admiral Bremer had left a lot to be desired, she could only hope that this one would be better. The doors opened depositing her on the bridge. She paused, and then chose to move to the Intel station before heading over to tactical. She only needed to let people know she was here, even though they could just look at the report if necessary.
