Checking out the USS Princeton.

404 words; about a 2 minute read

Mission: Mission 82 - The Aggressor
Location: Starbase 400
Timeline: Mission return plus 24 hours

It had been a little over 24 hours since Andrew and the rest of the crew of the Kearsarge had returned to Starbase 400.

Andrew had made his initial report to Admiral Bremer, along with recommendations concerning some of the crew of both the Avenger and the Kearsarge, but now he was back getting on with the overhaul of the Princeton.

He sat in his office looking over the report left by the senior engineer dealing with the computer upgrades. It was interesting, but not really his cup of tea, so to speak. What he was interested in was how the old ship would perform compared with modern equivalents. Getting up he put the report on his desk and headed for a holosuite.

A few minutes, later he was looking around the blank room of holosuite 4. It would do for what he wanted. “Computer, lights out”, he spoke quietly, but the computer easily understood and complied.

“I want a scale model of the USS Princeton floating in the middle of the room. Display structural stress points and percentage of design tolerance for each point.”

The ship model changed as various points became highlighted with a series of zeros attached to each point. He walked around the ship looking at the various stress points. The most obvious were the engine struts and the bridge to engineering hull neck. The section where the torpedo tubes fitted just about the engineering hull seemed to have compromised the structural integrity in that point.

He stood back, “display structural stressed at warp 1”. The zeros all changed upwards as the stresses on the ship were displayed for warp 1, “Ok”, he hesitated a second, “Warp 4”.

“Current warp speed calculation or calculation at time of construction?”, the computers almost monotone voice intoned.

Andrew smiled, he hadn’t thought of that. All current starships were designed based on the new calculation of warp speed. “What’s the difference? Provide warp speeds of both calculations for constitution refit class design maximum speed.”

The computers reply was instant. “Design speed is Warp 9.2 on the scale in force at time of construction. In current calculation that is warp 7.3704805”.

He thought for a moment, “That meant technically the Princeton is slower than a Nova class scout”, he involuntarily spoke out loud. The stress readings forgotten, Andrew walked towards the door, “Close and save programme. Clifford Princeton 1”

“Programme saved”, he heard the computer say as the door closed behind him.
