Getting a feel of things

375 words; about a 2 minute read

Mission: Mission 81 - Revenge
Location: Starbase 400
Timeline: current.

Andrew glided over the Princeton in his EVA suit. He had been considering using a shuttle but he was short on EVA hours so decided on that route instead.

There was something about the lines of the refitted constitution class starships. They were, in his opinion, the best looking of all the starship designs. But, like all things the design was not as warp efficient as the newer designs and so they were phased out.

Gliding up to the personnel airlock he let himself in and once out of his suit, went for a walkabout. While there were only two engineering crews the amount of devastation was impressive. I would have expected this from a squad of marines with chainsaws.
Everywhere he looked there was panels open or removed and miles of cabling and power conduits laying on the decks. Looking into one of the open panels the devastation was even more impressive with whole systems missing.

He headed for the bridge, although he had to climb almost the full height of the ship to get there. The doors were open and Andrew could see that most of the chairs were missing along with the station consoles. Two engineers were busy working underneath the section that held, or would eventually hold, the captains chair. One of them looked up as Andrew entered the bridge.
"Hello Sir. Sorry if we don't get up but we're trying to get the new bridge command links into place. There is another team in the engineering section working on the new isolinear computer core."

Andrew waved a hand, "No problem. If you stood to attention every time someone came into where you were working, you would never get anything done. These ships didn't have a ready room, where does the captain hang out when not on duty?"

While passing his partner a set of tools, he pointed back the way Andrew had come in. "There is the observation lounge Sir, but nothing in their works at the moment."

Andrew stood and looked around, then nodded, "Ok, Thanks for the information. Where's the officer in charge?"

"Down in engineering, Sir". The owner of the voice had once again disappeared into the hatchway. Andrew left it at that and headed for engineering.
