Deela sat in her office, waiting for R'nard and Clifford to arrive. A PADD was on the table along with two small cases. She shoved them in a drawer.
Andrew was still in engineering when the time for his meeting with the Admiral came round. The ship had performed weel during this outing and the repairs had held up as he had expected. He looked over at the CEO, "I've got to go see the Admiral, I'll be back later today, You can give me the report on the engine struts then."
The CEO waved an affirmative and Andrew headed out of engineering.
R'nard chimed the door and waited. He wondered what the Admiral wanted.
Deela looked up towards the door, "Enter."
R'nard entered. "Rrreporting as ordered, Admiral." he said.
When the door opened, she smiled at him, "Hi. Come on in and pull up a seat. As soon as Commander Clifford gets here, then I'll let you know what this is all about." Deela sat forward, "So how do you feel about your performance on this last mission?"
They didn't have to wait long, he virtually entered the bridge as R'nard entered the Admirals office.
He hit the door chime and waited.
"Come on in Commander." Deela was in quite a good mood considering what she came home to.
Andrew entered the Admirals office. Seeing R'nard already sitting down, Andrew found a chair and did the same. He looked at the Admiral.
"We were just starting to discuss R'nard's performance on this mission." Her attention went back to R'nard.
Sitting there, Andrew nodded and looked across at R'nard and waited. From what he had seen of the mission, R'nards performance was second to none, but he would keep his own counsel until asked.
"The mission went smoothly except for one event." said R'nard. "One member of my team was serriously injured, and I had him beamed up. I apologize for concerning you that it was a casualty. The doctor says there is a 50 percent probability of rrecovery.
I take such things hard, as no casualties should happen on my watch. I trrrain them well, and take rresponsibility for it. I value each member of my team, and don't want those things to happen. I call it a casualty because in my eyes it is. That is a part of my own trraining where I was brrought up in the Trralazar monastery.
I went to see him twice already. I hope for his rrecovery."
Deela picked up the PADD that was laying on the desk and began searching it's contents. When she found what she was looking for, she slid it to R'nard. "Look here. Seventy-nine were wounded and killed on this mission. I don't want you to beat yourself up over this. I have had command of the Essex for over twelve years and I can't count on my fingers how many I have lost." She looked over at Clifford.
Andrew took the Admirals look as permission to comment, "You and your team did very well, Lt Commander. I understand that casualties are not what you want, but it happens sometimes and no amount of training will change that. You and your team were second to none out there. You could, in my opinion, have done no more".
"Exactly." She smiled at R'nard, "I'm proud to have you as part of my crew."
R'nard studied the PADD. "I agree, Admiral. But I have heard one never gets used to it. That's something we all have to live with, I guess."
You're right, you don't. And i'm not expecting you to either. Now with that said..." She opens the drawer and pulls out a little box, "This I believe belongs to you." She opens it up to reveal a shiny solid gold pip.
R'nard's mouth dropped open. "For me?" he squeaked. "I don't know what to say, Admiral. Thank you."
Andrew smiled, "Well Done, Commander. You deserve it...and as an added bonus you don't have to call me 'sir' anymore. Hahaha."
Deela grinned, "Well, that's not exactly true. He'll still need to call you sir. In fact..." She once again opens the drawer and pulls out another box. "I think this one has your name on it." Deela opened the box up and slid it towards him. "Congratulations Captain."
Deela sat back in her chair and looked at both of her officers and a proud expression came across her face. "You both deserve these promotions. I can't tell you how proud I feel right now."
R'nard affixed the new pip to his collar. "It couldn't have happened to a better man, sirr." he said. "Let me congrratulate you."
Andrew blushed a little, "Well, I.. er.." short silence as Andrew opens the book to look at the pip, "Thank you Admiral. This is... never mind, just thank you, and to you too R'nard."
He looked over at R'nard, "Yes, I guess you have to keep calling me 'sir', sorry". He smiled and added the new pip to three already on his shoulder.
Being part Betazoid and Vulcan meant that no one could hide their emotions from her. Instead of making Andrew blush any more than he did, she just smiled at him and R'nard, "We wouldn't have promoted you both if we didn't think you earned it."
Deela stood up and then realized that she forgot one more thing, "Oh yes, by the way Captain. It looks like Admiral Bremer has given you a support ship of your own as well, the USS Kearsarge. It's also an Intrepid class so you should be familiar with it." She waited for them to stand so she could shake their hands or equivalent thereof, making it official.
Andrew was completely shellshocked now, but did his best to conceal it, "Thank you again, Admiral. The pip was one thing but to get a ship as well... Thank you".
He stood up to match the Admiral and waited. He just hoped there weren't anymore surprises, getting a ship was more than enough for one day.
She smiled and shook his hand, "You're welcome." She then looked over at R'nard
"And I want to thank you as well, Admiral. I will live up to the honor." said R'nard. He rose as he said that.
Turning to Andrew, he said "And I congratulate you on your new ship, sirr."
"Thank you."
R'nard turned back to Admiral T'lar and waited.
Deela stuck her hand out and shook his as well, "Congratulations Commander." Now addressing both of them, "Okay, I'm off to see Major Hurd." She pulled out one more small box, "He's recuperating in Sickbay. Maybe we'll join up for drinks later. So, I guess this means that you are both dismissed."
R'nard bowed in his usual fashion and departed.
Andrew turned and followed R'nard out of the room, leave T'lar alone in the room. As he headed back to his quarters, he reflected on the last few minutes. A pip and a ship. He shook his head still not really believing it.
