Mike had returned to Ops after meeting with Captain Picard, Command Worf, Commander LaForge, and B4. As he walked in, he was met by Captain Greenwood.

Greenwood, Bremer's new Chief of Staff, had a solemn look on his face. Greenwood had arrived at Starbase 400 aboard his ship, the USS Avenger when they had rendezvoused with the Pegasus at Earth and followed them back to the station.

The Avenger had suffered heavy damage at the hands of the Gorn. She had received emergency repairs before continuing on to SB400. The Defiant class ship had seen her share of action in her career. NCC-74206 needed a lot of work if that career was to continue...

"Admiral, can you follow me over to Damage Control. I have an update on the condition of the Avenger."

Ryan had been hoping that things wouldn't have panned out the way they did.

Mike nodded and the men stepped over to the Damage Control station along the back wall in Ops. Ryan brought up diagrams of the Avenger and textual details of the damage...it wasn't good. There was micro-fractures all though the vessel's superstructure, stress cracks and warpage of key bulkheads, and extensive damage to the ship's critical infrastructure...plasma and EPS conduits. The whole power grid was currently 'hot wired' just so the vessel could make it to SB400.

Mike's thoughts drifted back to his previous ship, that Pegasus had massive damage and was hastily repaired before she was called into action again...the action that would be her last...

"Ryan, I'll be honest, the damage is worse than I thought. I'd still like Mr. Smith and Mr. Blackthorne to take a look when they get back...but we might be forced to decommission and scrap her." Mike's face showed some sorrow too, he'd never been aboard the Avenger before, but he knew the attachment a Captain had for his ship...

Ryan was some what expecting that response, but he didnt want to here that his first commanded ship would have to be decommissioned after so many years. He nodded hesitantly to acknowledge the Admiral's observations.

"If it comes down to it Admiral, is there another ship that I can be assigned to?"

Mike replied, "Well, we do have an Intrepid Class ship that is nearing completion in Dry-dock three, no Commanding Officer or crew has been assigned yet."

Ryan was relieved. He wouldn't be stuck on the starbase forever waiting for one to be built. The damage to the Avenger was extensive and if they had tried to fix her it may take just as long. An Intrepid class was much bigger than his defiant class. Not as maneuverable has he was used to, but he would get by.

"If you can get it approved Admiral, I will take command of the Intrepid class." Ryan said with a bit of hesitation. He knew he would be agreeing to decommissioning the Avenger.

"All right, if you're sure, I'll sign off on it and contact Starfleet Command about getting the vessel assigned to you." Mike said with a reassuring smile.

"I have one small request Admiral. Is there a way we can get the Intrepid named after the Avenger?" Ryan knew a request like that generally wasn't hard to do but he felt a bit odd asking.

Bremer laughed, "That shouldn't be a problem, I'll request they rename her to Avenger."

"Thank you Admiral." Ryan said with a smile.

Mike nodded, "Anytime Captain."

Mike then headed to his Office. Now, he had two vessels that were to be decommissioned before their time...
