Mission 80 - Outpost
Location: Starbase 400
Timeline: Several Hours After 'Lunch...'
ON:
It had been a quiet few days since Clark's capture and the remnants of his former Pirate group were in hiding. Jon Westmoreland was out there somewhere still, hiding as well, and his remaining friends in Section 31 were seeing to that, even though Westmoreland was labeled as an enemy to the Federation now.
Repairs had been completed on the Yorktown, Essex, and Steadfast and they were still progressing on the Avenger. Work was still progressing aboard the Princeton. Yep, it seemed to be back to the status quo at Starbase 400.
Admiral Bremer back in Ops, still full from his Chinese lunch with T'Lar and Jones. He was looking over sensor readings of a recent land quake down on Kaleb IV. The Federation Colony hadn't been affected, but it had been a massive planetary event on the other side of the world. On Earth, it would be been a 9.6 on the Rictor scale. Science teams had been dispatched to the area to study the event and it's after effects.
Space traffic to and from Starbase 400 was returning to normal levels. Starships, Freighters, and a handful or private vessels were coming and going. The former Colonies within the Neutral Zone had been cleared of all Federation Citizens that wanted to leave, and anyone left behind were now considered to no longer be citizens. It was a hard thing to sit back and watch, and
many people thought back to the Maquis years before.
It was nearly 1900 hours and looked to be a quiet vening...until the comm beeped.
"Admiral, I have an incoming transmission from Vice Admiral Sisko." Lieutenant Archer reported from Ops.
Mike looked up, surprised. He hadn't spoken to Ben Sisko in a few weeks, and this seemed important...official.
"On screen Nick." Mike replied as he looked up at the main viewscreen in Ops.
In a flash, the face of Vice Admiral Benjamin Lafayette Sisko appeared on the screen. Behind him was clearly the Bridge of the USS Defiant.
"What do we owe the pleasure, sir?" Mike said with a smile.
"The Defiant will be docking in about thirty minutes," He flashed his warm smile, "I thought I'd finally pay a visit to YOUR space station." Sisko replied.
Mike returned the smile, but he knew there was much more to it than that, "It's about time. Permission granted, I'll meet you at the airlock."
Sisko nodded, and the channel closed. As Mike headed for the turbolift, he tapped his commbadge, "Admiral T'Lar, General Jones, Captain K'Temoc, Captain Pike meet me outside airlock one of Docking Bay Eighteen in twenty minutes. Bremer out."
As Mike stepped into the lift, Archer turned at looked back at K'Wor who was at Tactical One, "Hey...why did he call Sisko 'sir'? He out ranks him."
K'Wor smirked, "My dad always calls Sisko sir, even when he was still a Captain and my dad a Fleet Admiral. He really respects Ben, they've known each other a long time, before the Dominion War. He even serviced aboard Deep Space Nine for a while before being assigned XO of the Pegasus when the war started."
Nearly thirty minutes later, the Senior Officers of Starbase 400 had gathered at the airlock, watching the Defiant dock.
"He didn't tell you why he'd come all the way from DS9 without notice?" K'Temoc asked.
"Other than saying he wanted to visit SB400, no." Mike replied as the computer beeped, alerting them the Defiant had hard dock.
A few moments later, the air lock opened and out stepped Vice Admiral Sisko, Captain Kira, and Dr. Bashir.
"Welcome to Starbase 400." Mike said with a smile. "I believe you know my senior officers. Vice Admiral T'Lar, Brigadier General Jones, Captain Pike, and Captain K'Temoc." Mike replied as everyone exchanged pleasantries. Most of them already knew each other anyway.
Then, Sisko stepped to the side, "I believe you also know our guest, Odo."
Mike's eyes widened for a moment. "It's a...been a while."
As Odo stepped forward, two Jem Hadar guards stepped forward as well, "It has. It's good to see you again Admiral." Odo replied.
Mike nodded. He and Odo hadn't seen eye to eye on many things while Mike served aboard DS9, but they both respected each other. The last time Mike had seen Odo was eleven years ago when he'd taken the Pegasus into Dominion Space to investigate the Dominion Civil War. That conflict had ended soon thereafter, but the Pegasus's mission had been able to
strengthen the peace between the Federation and Dominion. Now, Odo was here, on Starbase 400...and it wasn't just for a 'chat.'
"Is there somewhere we can talk, privately?" Odo asked.
"Right this way." Mike replied.
Several minutes later, the group...Bremer, T'Lar, Sisko, Jones, Pike, K'Temoc, Kira, Bashir, Odo, and his two Jem Hadar guards stepped into Tactical Astrometerics. One of the Jem Hadar stopped just inside the door and took up position there, guarding the room. The other stayed close to Odo.
Kira handed K'Temoc an isolinear chip and he loaded it into the main terminal. A map of the Neutral Zone quickly appeared. At the lower edge of the map was Starbase 400. In the middle, was the planet Iconia, located within the Neutral Zone.
Kira stepped forward, "You're all familiar with the planet Iconia. Located by Captain Donald Varley of the Yamato and Captain Picard of the Enterprise-D on Stardate 42610.2. Home to the Iconian civilization, their technology allowed their people to step across thousands of light years in the blink of an eye. The facility on the planet was destroyed a short time after its discovery. Archeologist teams were never sent to the planet
because of its location within the Zone. A senor net was set up jointly by the Starfleet and the Romulans to ensure no one set foot on the planet. Following the Dominion War and the removal of the Zone, the Federation and Romulan governments agreed to keep the planet listed as 'off limits', both fearing the other would discover technology that would tip the balance of power."
Odo then stepped forward, beside Kira, "The Dominion located another Iconian planet within the Gamma Quadrant with similar technology on Stardate 49731.7. In a joint Starfleet/Dominion Operation, that facility was destroyed a short time afterwards. Later, during the war, a small Jem Hadar fleet was sent to Iconia to attempt to recover any information or technology still there. The team managed to circumvent the Starfleet and
Romulan sentry satellites and land on the planet. A few months later, the Romulans joined the war and communications were cut off with the force on Iconia and it was believed they had been destroyed by the Romulans."
Mike folded his arms and looked at the screen. He'd read about the Enterprise's mission to Iconia, and had been a part of the Defiant's raid on the Iconian facility in the Gamma Quadrant, "You believe a Dominion force is still on Iconia?"
Sisko nodded, "Last month a Romulan Warbird was located crashed into one of the moons in the Chin'toka system. The Cardassians informed us of the discovery and we sent a recovery team. The team located the ship's log, and an entry mentioned the ship chasing a Jem Hadar attack ship into the
Iconian system before loosing contact. The Warbird was ordered to break off pursuit and rejoin their unit. I sent the information to Odo, and we agree, it's a very real possibility there is still a Dominion base on Iconia.
K'Temoc folded his arms, much like his brother did, and turned to look at Sisko, "If there are Jem Hardar troops still on Iconia, they may not even know the war is over. My question is, why they haven’t attacked anyone. It's been years since the war ended.
"The unit that was sent there had only a small task group, six Attack Ships. Their orders were to establish a base of operations on the planet and hold it for the Dominion. Their mission was secret, they were ordered not to attack and risk giving away their location. The unit is commanded by a
Vorta named Deyos and his Jem Hardar First Ikat'ika." Odo replied.
Mike had heard those names before, from Worf. When he was held captive in a Dominion Prison Camp, the Vorta in charge was named Deyos and his Jem Hadar First was Ikat'ika. Worf reported Deyos was a typical Vorta, and Ikat'ika was one of the toughest Jem Hadar he'd faced...but Deyos has ordered both him and Worf executed when Ikat'ika refused to kill Worf. Perhaps this Jem Hardar was a clone of the previous one.
"We also asked the 'White' question. By now, normal Jem Hardar units would have exhausted their supply. However, as Odo explained, their job was to take and hold the planet and set up a base, they were sent with extra supplies, including Ketracel White. If the Dominion had attacked the Romulans, they would of been an advanced base, able to resupply advancing Jem Hardar units with White while supply lines were established." Bashir explained.
"All the while, trying to uncover Iconian secrets." Mike added. "If Jem Hardar troops are there, they would still be carrying out their orders, holding the planet to the death." Mike looked over at the Jem Hardar standing close to Odo.
"That is the order of things." He replied, meeting Mike's stare.
"This is First Ramata’Tar. He not only serves as my personal guard, but also as the First of a Jem Hardar commando team we've brought along." Odo quickly added.
K'Temoc smirked, "You, need a body guard Odo?"
Odo returned the smirk at K'Temoc's joke.
"The same kind of commando team Weyoun commanded on our little joint op?" Mike asked Sisko.
Sisko nodded, "But this time, we don't have self-centered, egotistical Vorta getting in our way." He flashed a smile.
Mike smirked back. "What's your plan?"
Sisko tapped a command into the console, and arrows representing Starships appeared and tracked toward Iconia, "We take a force of four or five starships to Iconia. Odo will attempt to peacefully talk the Jem Hardar garrison down. If successful, we'll escort them back to Starbase 400, then on to DS9 and the Wormhole. If unsuccessful..."
"We will eliminate them." Ramata’Tar added.
Sisko glanced back at the big Jem Hadar First, then let out a breath, "Exactly."
Mike nodded. "I'll alert the Senior Staff, let's form an attack plan.
Sisko and Odo nodded as Mike tapped his comm-badge, "Bremer to Senior Staff, report to Tactical Astrometerics."
