Always thinking

781 words; about a 4 minute read

Mission: Mission 79 - Triangle
Location: On board the Steadfast
Timeline: Current with Here and There

“Well, my day did has not gone according to plan,” Saith said to herself as she slipped out of her uniform. She was in her temporary quarters, thanks to some lieutenant something-or-other and had decided to try and get a nap.

She slid on the pajamas she had replicated and lay down on the cool bed. It was comfortable enough, at least as comfortable as any ships bed she had every lain upon, but she found herself laying there awake. She did not ‘toss and turn’ as it was because she refused to give into the temptation to do so.

Her mind kept going back over the events of the day. It was clear to her way of thikning that one of the people n Security when she began her shift did not belong there. Her mind wandered over her arrival in Security on SB400. Everyone had looked at her when she walked through the door. One person, a woman, had looked confused but had said nothing, and after Saith had identified herself, the woman had glanced at the two men and turned back to what she was doing.

The men in the room had barely acknowledged her arrival. Had the woman been confused? Concerned? Why? Did she not know a new person was arriving, or maybe at what time? Or did she just not like Saith? Saith’s mind continued to churn.

She mistakenly sat bolt upright in bed and instantly swore “Favdt,” when her forehead hit the bottom of the bunk above her. Rubbing the sore spot, she got out of bed and went to the computer terminal. She sat on the chair thinking; what if the woman was confused because she had thought Saith was already there?

She was glad that there was no one else currently in this room. It was a small postage stamped sized room, way off the beaten path of the ship. She half expected it was actually being used as a closet that the ship’s crew had hurriedly cleaned out before she arrived here on the lower deck. It kept her away from everyone else, and everyone else away from her. That is okay, she liked it this way.

She sat back and thought about the men that had been in the office. She knew most humans could not tell by a name if a Romulan was male or female. Usually only the linguists or if the name was well known, like Tomalak, could they readily figure it out. Had someone already checked in with her name? Maybe that was why the woman had looked confused. She had looked at the men then turned to her computer terminal. What was she doing? Saith wished now she had been more curious about the other people there. Or she admitted to herself, more polite. Her father often reminded her to go and talk to people when you first arrived somewhere. She never did.

She tapped her security code into the computer to see what she could pull up regarding the Security reports for SB400. As expected, they were limited; basic reports, nothing more available. She wasn’t surprised at that what surprised her, and always had, was that anything at all could be accessed. It wasn’t like that in the Empire, there your codes only worked in your department, on your own ship, or at your own home. AND if something happened on ship, it was only available on ship. Trust. That ugly word again. Starfleet seemed to have it in spades, although not completely.

On a whim, she asked the computer where Captain K’Temoc’s quarters were. The computer wouldn’t tell her. She frowned wondering if that was for just her, or for everyone. After all, the entire crew knew he was here by now. She knew that she was here by mistake and that probably officially she was off the taking care of the Captain detail. But she had not been kidding when she left him on the bridge. She felt it was still her duty to protect him, whether he liked it or not!

She shut down the computer, changed into a fresh uniform and headed out for the ship’s Security Department. Perhaps it would be more forthcoming about both what happened on the base and with the man they called Clark. It also occurred to her she was allowing herself to be sexist assuming it was the men out of whack instead of the woman. Why had she done so? Because it was a man they had caught outside of K'Temoc's quarters on base? She made a note to find out where K’Temoc was staying.
