Mission:
Mission 79 - Triangle
Location: Starbase 400
Timeline: Following 'Steadfast Mission Update'
ON:
After his subspace convocation with the Steadfast, Mike left his Office. As he passed though Ops, he nodded to Lokran and the two headed for the Brig.
As they entered into the lift, Bremer turned to his Security Chief. “All is well aboard the Steadfast, but as we suspected Ensign Baratan is aboard the ship with them." He paused a moment, "I apologize for having to leave you out of the deception, but the Essex wasn’t back to the Station yet and we couldn’t risk transmitting those plans and someone intercepting them.”
"Underrstood, sirr." said R'nard. "It is standard prrocedure where I come from."
Mike smirked, then added, “His DNA matched a former Starfleet Enlisted Crewmember, Petty Officer Rodney Pavlik. I’ve received his file from Captain Eastman. He was a real troublemaker aboard the USS Dallas before going AWOL. Were you able to get anything else out of him during your initial interrogation?”
"Nothing yet." said R'nard. "He is good, very good."
As the men entered the Brig, the Security Officer on duty, an Andorian Ensign, turned and acknowledged the Admiral and Commander. “All is quiet sir, he’s just been sitting there.”
“Thank you Ensign. You’re dismissed.” Mike replied.
The man’s antenna perked up for a moment as he looked at the Admiral, then at the Commander. “Aye sir.” He replied as he tapped commands into the console and log out. He then turned and left the Brig.
Mike then looked over at the prisoner. He was the only one this Brig. Mike had thought about having him assigned to the Maximum Security Brig along with is duplicate from the mirror universe and convicted serial killer Morgan Dexter, but that would be the first place any accomplice would check.
Mike walked over to the cell, “Rodney Pavlik…former Petty Officer Rodney Pavlik of the USS Dallas. Captain Eastman sent us your Starfleet Records. Put on report four times over the last six months for insubordination, then went AWOL.”
The prisoner looked up at Bremer, “I didn’t agree with the way Karl ran the ship.”
Mike smirked, “I didn’t know you and Captain Eastman were on a first name basis, but he mentioned you had the intelligence and drive, you just didn’t apply yourself. Late for duty shifts, bad attitude, should I go on?”
“What’s your point? I’m not his problem anymore.” Pavlik replied.
“A week ago, Starfleet Intelligence intercepted a transmission from you to your parents on Earth. A brief one, letting them know you were okay, you just needed time to ‘clear your head’. The location the transmission was sent from was within the Triangle. It’s my belief that you were with Clark and his group and because of your training in Security and recent Starfleet experience, he sent you here to either make sure Captain K’Temoc was out the way, or to kill him.”
The man folded his arms across his chest and leaned against the back wall of the cell.
Mike looked Pavlik in the eyes, “Now, you’re going to send a transmission for us. You’re going to tell Clark that K’Temoc has been neutralized but you’re unable get away from Starbase 400 at this time due to increase Security Protocols. Request additional orders.” Mike paused, and then added, “If you refuse or alert Clark in any way, your parents will be arrested by Starfleet Security for aiding and abetting as well as conspiracy to commit treason against the Federation...”
He cut Mike off, “All right! But you have to agree they aren’t harmed, they have nothing to do with this.” Pavlik replied.
“If you fully cooperate, you have my word.” Mike replied in a very serious tone.
Pavlik nodded, and Mike looked back at Lokran. “Lower the forcefield, we’ll transmit audio only. Make it appear he’s having to piggy-back his transmission to hide it.”
"Understood, sirr." said R'nard, as he went to the console and lowered the forcefield, keeping an eye on Pavlik. He was relaxed, but ready to move like lightning if necessary.
"Transmission rready, sirr."
Mike pointed to the comm panel, and Pavlik walked closer before tapping in the exact frequency to transmit to, then he spoke, "Mike-Alpha, Sierra-Sierra, Alpha-November-Oscar."
Mike looked at Pavlik, but the prisoner replied before Mike asked the question. "Mission Accomplished, Situation Secure, Awaiting New Orders." He smirked, then added, "What better wait to hide secure information than in plain sight?"
It was crude, and all the Admiral could do was shake his head.
After a few minutes, a reply finally came, and Mike recognized the voice of Jon Westmoreland. "Uniform, Hotel-Papa, Indigo-2."
The channel quickly closed and Mike looked at Pavlik, "What did he say?"
"Understood, hold position, inform..." Pavlik trailed off, just looked at Mike.
"Inform who?" Mike paused for a brief moment, "A second accomplice. Who is it?"
"That wasn't part of the deal. You told me to contact Clark, I did. Now you're on your own!" Pavlik smirked and cross his arms again.
Bremer looked back at R'nard, "You get a fix on that reply?"
"Aye, sirr." said R'nard. "I have him!"
Mike looked back at Pavlik with a smirk. "Thank you for your help." Mike then clinched his fist and punched Pavlik in the jaw, knocked him to the floor, blood dripping from his mouth.
The prisoner looked up at Mike, wiping away the blood.
Mike grabbed him, picked him up, and shoved him back into the cell before activating the forcefield again. He then looked at Pavlik, but spoke to R'nard, "Mister Lokran, get the word out that our prisoner is cooperating, talking. Let's see if that draws out his friend."
"Gladly." said R'nard. "I know who to contact." He went right to work, texting his contacts with the information.
Pavlik's eyes widened, "He'll kill me!"
"What's your point?" Mike sarcastically replied before turning away and leaving the Brig.
R'nard stayed behind, but was giving out his messages. He knew eventually, they would bring Pavlik's friend out.
