Like the wind

Mission:
Mission 79 - Triangle
Location: SB 400 Security Deparment
Timeline: Current
On:
It was mid-morning and Saith was only part way through the OICs. Between the size of SB 400 and all the ships assigned to her, there was also a lot of brass, stripes, and stars connected to this station! She closed the file on Captain Harrison and sat back in her seat, contemplating what she had learned so far.
In her peripheral vision she saw a . . . something on three computer screens, the one she was using and two others in her line of sight. She wasn’t sure what she saw as it was gone just as quickly as it had come.
“What the hell?!” she leaned forward and checked the screen, nothing seemed amiss. “Computer, run diagnostic zero-zero-one.” In less than a moment the computer said “Complying.” She didn’t have to wait long until the computer reported that nothing had gone wrong.
Saith decided on another approach, “Computer, analyze computer anomaly occurring at . . .” she glanced at the chronometer and figured back giving the computer the time frame of the blip on the screen.
Again the computer came back with nothing, but the odd part was that the computer denied anything had occurred. Her interest piqued she went into investigation mode. Saith didn’t know it but she was smiling as she hunched forward to tackle this sidetracking mystery. As she dug through the programming and the computer files and folders that smile began to turn into a frown.
After awhile she sat back in her chair, the frown now etched into her mouth and her eyebrows. “Hmm,” the small sound escaped while she considered her options. Lt. Cmdr. Lokran was off station, she wasn't sure who her next in command would be. She certainly did not want to, nor felt she should at this early stage go to the Admiral.
She glanced around and found to her surprise she was now alone. She knew there were at least four other officers, two other Ensigns and two Klingons. With a little effort she managed not to wrinkle her nose at the thought of working with the Klingons. ‘Old habits die hard’ she thought.
She thought about her options for reporting was she did find, or perhaps more importantly what she didn’t. To start with she logged it in the Security Departments reports. Then deciding that if it was going to be investigated by anyone other than herself or the Security Department, it was probably going to be done by the Intelligence department. She decided to send the information to Captain Pike, he could decide if they should persue it.
“Computer record.” She waited until it replied.
“Security Officer Ensign Saith i-Ki Baratan reporting to Captain Pike.” She paused trying to decide what exactly to say. She decided short and sweet was the way to go, “Sir, at 1145 today, I observed a computer anomaly simultaniously on three separate computer terminals. Computer diagnostics show this was not a malfunction. No errors or problems are shown to have occured at that time. I was able to determin there was a deliberate transmission. The initial transmission was brief, no more than 30 seconds. As this transmission appeared outside of normal protocols I attempted to track down the message and source.”
She paused again wondering if Captain Pike would think her an idiot. What was it father used to say ‘in for a penny, in for a pound.’ That human saying never really made sense to her, why would anyone use money in that fashion.
She continued with the report “I was unable to locate the actual message. Additionally, and what I find most interesting is that just like the wind I cannot locate a begin point or an end point. I can only report that it was here briefly and in which direction it moved. The transmission went off base but I am sorry to report I also have not located the end point at this time.
Lt. Cmdr. Lokran is off-base at moment. I will continue my investigations here but feelthis information is something that your department should be aware of. I will keep trying to locate both the source and recipient of the transmission. Ensign i-Ki Baratan out.”
She sent the report before she could change her mind. Then she turned her attention back to the computer. This was no letter back home it was too hidden, and the source too competent at hiding. She began combing through the files much slower this time, carefully looking for clues as to the identity of the sender or the content of the transmission itself.
