Episode 120 - Guardian at the Gate
Location: USS Perseus

The lighting was somewhat dim with the regular pulse of the red warning strips. There was a layer of smoke in the air. Grian scrambled to her feet, retaking her station. The console barely responded. The panel was a little dim and sluggish at first, as she tried to get a status update.
"Everyone ok?" She asked in a clear loud voice.
Sullivan took a deep breath and exhaled loudly, "Whew, that was one hell of a ride!"
He studied his console and tapped out a few commands only to be met with that all too familiar buzz of 'can not comply' from the computer. "My navigational systems are taking some time to reboot, I'll have to lay the course manually. We'll head for the type G system first, go alphabetical and all. We've only got impulse power for now, but I'll coordinate with engineering to get warp engines back online as soon as we can."
"Sounds good Sullivan and yeah, quite a ride. Let me know if I can assist you in any way." Grian replied.
Ariana sat up from where she’d found herself thrown, fortunately having avoided sustaining any injuries. “I swear next time I’ll just sit here the whole time and then I won’t be tossed around.” She offered a wry smile as she got to her feet.
Mike had taken some time to get his bearings too while looking over a tactical map of the area. "K'Wor, probe status?"
"Launched, but I'm having trouble getting power back to the launcher systems. I can't even get a torpedo to load, much less shoot if we had to." K'Wor replied.
"Stark, get down to Engineering and see if you can help get power back online." Bremer ordered.
Stark nodded as he finished wiping blood away from his forehead. "Hey, Droney, you're with me."
Two of Ten looked around for a moment, "I'm not longer a 'drone', but I will comply."
Suddenly, the tactical panel beeped. "Sir we have a ship approaching. Kazon. A Predator type vessel."
"Arev, see what you can do to reroute power to engines and tactical systems while Stark is working on a more permanent solution." Mike said before tapping his commbadge. "Bremer to Kyle, have your Marines ready to repel boarders."
Mike then turned and looked at Sullivan, "We need to go, now. Hide if you have to but keep us out of their sight."
Arev nodded silently as he plied his console. An idea beginning to form in his head.
"Vessel is not on an intercept course, but their course will bring us within their sensor range in thirty minutes." K'Wor added.
"My pleasure, sir," Sullivan replied with equal hints of nerve and wit in his tone. He'd heard stories of the Kazon and certainly didn't fancy an encounter so far away with so many systems on the blink, and no backup to boot.
He continued "course has been altered - I've used their projected trajectory and set the most oppositional course I can that'll have the least impact on our current heading towards the G type star. We should have good clearance from their sensors. I can start pulling power from all non-essential systems and reroute it to the impulse engines - we'll be going well above the reccomended threshold for impulse, sir, but it's our best bet right now to make sure we avoid contact..."
“Kazon, I’ve read about them not good.” Ariana added as she moved around to get a look at the readouts herself. She felt something of a spare wheel at the moment so any insight she could offer she would.
"The fun just keeps coming doesn't it." Grian commented. "Best that we don't make contact with the Kazon. What exactly is our objective now we are here?" She asked.
Anna was relieved that they had all come out of this okay. Just with some bumps and bruises. “Good question.”
There were several moments of silence before it was broken by K'Wor. "Why is a Kazon ship out this far?"
Mike looked back, but before he could ask anything K'Wor continued.
"I was able to access some of Voyager's tactical data from when they arrived in the Delta Quadrant. We're nearly a dozen light years further in than they were and there was no indication the Kazon has made it out this far. Without the Caretaker, and using data and tech they were able to get from Voyager it looks like one or more Kazon sects were able to expand their influence." K'Wor explained.
"Just like other ships attempted to follow Voyager's general course over the years and eventually find the Talaxian asteroid colony Neelix settled on." Mike added.
"Stark to Bridge, you've got warp six available now. Shields, weapons, even the lights will take a little longer."
"Sullivan, go!" Bremer said.
"On it, sir," Sullivan replied, engaging warp before he'd even finished his reply, "that should speed this up a touch."
"Corporal Jenz to Admiral Bremer. Sir, I've found someone on board that doesn't belong here."
Mike looked around, confused. "Bring them to the Bridge, and have Mr. Kyle join us here."
Several moments later the doors to the small bridge opened and a Marine Sargent stepped out followed by author Jackson Longfellow Cain and Christopher Bremer. Colonel Kyle followed them.
"They were in one of the crew compartments sir." The Sargent reported.
"What the hell?" Mike said aloud.
"Don't get mad at the boy sir, I coursed him into getting me aboard for this historical journey." Cain said as he patted Christopher on the shoulder.
Mike eyed his youngest son for a moment then pointed at an empty chair at the rear of the bridge. "Sit, there."
Mike then turned his attention back to Cain. "All you had to do was ask."
"Ah, yes...but this makes for a much more exciting adventure!" Cain smirked.
"Colonel, this man doesn't leave your side."
Mike slowed exhaled. "Sullivan, how long until we get to the first system?"
Sullivan activated the main viewscreen and overlaid the course data on an astrometrics grid. "At our current speed of warp 6, we're looking at 3-4 days, sir, all being well."
Arev looked up from his console toward Bremer, "Sir, I believe that we can make weapons and shields available in an emergency, prior to the full repair of those systems." He paused, "Unfortunately, if we use my proposal, and engage in a fight, we will likely lose both systems until the Perseus is docked at Starbase 400's repair bays." He finished entering commands, "I've sent what may work to engineering for Commander Stark's thoughts."
Mike walked over and stood behind the Vulcan. He looked over Arev's proposal for a few moments. "Last option....let's just hope we don't need it."
"Engineering to Bridge."
"Go ahead Stark." Mike replied.
"Good news, we have Warp 7 now. Bad news, we're low on deuterium, one of the tanks was ruptured and there's no way to make repairs while at warp. Good news is, we won't need need when we return through the conduit." Stark explained.
Mike could hear the sarcasm in Stark's voice. "What about Arev's proposal?"
"We can make it work, it's a sound idea...but we'll only be able to transfer the power to tactical systems once before the couplings are burned out...and if we take too many hits a lose one during the fight we may not be able to transfer power back to the engines." Stark explained. "And don't even ask about the cloak, it's fried."
"Alright. Let's hope the Gladiator's survivors are on the planet we're running toward. Bremer out." Mike looked back at Sullivan. "Take us to Warp 7...that'll get us there in about a day and a half."
